  • If cement can be manufactured with industrial byproducts such as granulated blast furnace slag(GBFS), phosphogypsum(PG), and waste lime(WL) instead of clinker as its counterproposal, there would be many advantages, including maximum use of these industrial byproducts for high value-added resources, conservation of natural resources and energy by omitting the use of clinker, minimized environmental pollution problems caused by CO2 discharge, and reduction of the production cost. This research investigates the chloride ion permeability of NSC concrete added PG and WL to GBFS as sulfate and alkali activators. The result of experiment of chloride ion permeability, showed that NSC is very excellent in seawater resistance. Such a reasons are that the hydrate like CSH gel and ettringite formed dense pore structure of NSC matrix.

  • By applying the vibrating mill modified slag cement on the concrete pile, the higher compressive strength was measured in spite of its smaller powder volume as comparing its compressive strength with existing products' one. As the result of SEM image observation, it was found that the strength was improved by the decreased size and abundance of pore along with increased cement hydrate in the dense structure.

  • The dense graded asphalt concrete materials have been used for construction of pavement for a long time. The performance of asphalt concrete pavement, however, is influenced by various factors including high temperature and heavy axle loads which cause plastic deformation. The plastic deformation is one of the main functional disadvantages of flexble pavement. In this study, the semi-rigid pavement is considered to solve the problem. A set of experimental evaluation on semi-rigid pavement material has been coducted in laboratory to obtain it's physical properties and serviceabilities. The results of tests, including compressive strength, flexural strength, ravelling and wheel tracking, show that the semi-rigid pavement has a good mechanical properties and serviceabilities. Consequently, the semi-rigid pavement may be suitable to bridge deck, tunnel, slow lane and parking area pavements.

  • Currently many researches have been performed for enhancing durability of concrete. Rice husk ash has several advantages like early strength of concrete and dense pore structure. A calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel around the cement particles due to pozzolanic reaction of rice husk can increase the strength of concrete against cracking. Very limitedly a systematic and detailed investigation on the corrosion performance of rice husk ash and silica fume blended concrete is performed. A realistic approach has been made through compressive strength, bond strength, and split tensile strength etc. Corrosion performance was also evaluated rapid chloride ion penetration test (RCPT) and impressed voltage test, and the results were discussed in the paper.

  • In a hardened concrete, diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide, aggressive ions, and moisture from the environment to the concrete takes place through the pore network. It is well known that making dense cement matrix enhances the durability of concrete as well as all the characteristics including strength of concrete. In this paper,9 mix concretes with water to cementitious material ratio (40,45, and $50\%$) and replacement ratio of GGBFS (40 and $60\%$ of cement by weight) were studied on the micro-pore structure by mercury intrusion porosimetry and the accelerated chloride diffusion test by potential difference. From the results the average pore diameter and accelerated chloride diffusivity of concrete were ordered NPC > G4C > G6C. It is concluded that there is a good correlation between the average pore diameter and the chloride diffusivity, and the mineral admixtures has a filling effect, which increases the tortuosity of pore and makes large pores finer, on the pore structure of cement matrix due to the latent hydraulic reaction with hydrates of cement.

  • This study is to investigate the insulation performance of lightweight concrete using recycled lightweight aggregate, to develop lightweight concrete products which have an excellence on the insulation performance are satisfied with properties of building materials. As a result of this study, recycled EPS aggregate is considered to have an independent pores which is closed by dense partitions. So, it is showed that the insulation performance of lightweight concrete using recycled EPS aggregate are excellent. Especially, in the case of lightweight concrete under conditions of replacement ratio over 100%, it is considered that insulation performance is very excellent as thermal conductivity is showed about 0.2kcal/mh$^{\circ}C$. According to considering the relation between ultrasonic pulse velocity, unit weight and thermal conductivity through the graph, the result of relation between ultrasonic pulse velocity, unit weight and thermal conductivity on the graph expressed their high interaction shown as direct proportion on the graph. So that it is possible to extract the insulation performance of lightweight concrete using recycled EPS aggregate by ultrasonic pulse velocity and unit weight.

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to develop a strength test method for irregularly shaped concrete block paver. METHODS : Ten (10) different types of concrete block pavers including porous and dense blocks were tested for strength capacities. Destructive and non-destructive methods were used to develop a strength test method for irregularly shaped concrete block paver. The flexural strength evaluation was conducted in accordance to KS F 4419, while compressive strength was conducted with a 45.7mm-diameter core specimen. The impact echo test method was used to evaluate the elastic modulus. Finally, regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus based on their corresponding test results. RESULTS : The flexural strength of the tested block pavers ranged from 4MPa to 10MPa. At 95% confidence level, the coefficients of determination between compressive-flexural strength relationship and compressive strength-elastic modulus relationship were 0.94 and 0.84, respectively. These coefficients signified high correlation. CONCLUSIONS : Using the test method proposed in this study, it will be easier to evaluate the strength of irregularly shaped concrete block pavers through impact echo test and compressive test, instead of the flexural test. Relative to the flexural strength requirement of 5MPa, the minimum values of compressive strength and elastic modulus, as proposed, are 13.0MPa and 25.0GPa, respectively.

  • Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is a type of ultra-high strength cement-based material with a dense microstructure, which is made of ultra-fine powders. RPC demonstrate a very brittle behavior, thus adding fibers improves its mechanical properties. In this study, it was attempted to investigate the effect of using steel and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers as well as their combination on the properties of RPC. In this regard, hooked-end crimped steel fibers together with short PVA fibers were utilized. Steel and PVA fibers were used with the maximum volume fraction of 3% and 0.75%, respectively, and also different combinations of these fibers were used with the maximum volume fraction of 1% in the concrete mixes. In total, 107 concrete specimens were prepared, and the effect of fiber type and volume fraction on the physico-mechanical properties of RPC including compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, density, and failure mode was explored. In addition, the effect of the curing type on the properties of compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, and density of RPC was evaluated. Finally, coefficients for conversion of cubic compressive strength to cylindrical one for the RPC specimens were obtained under the two curing regimes of heat treatment and standard water curing.

  • Blended Low Heat type cement is ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash mixed ternary with ordinary portland cement. From the viewpoint of X-ray patterns of domestic LHC, the main components of cement such as $C_2$S, $C_3$A, $C_3$S are considerably reduced. Therefore the heat evolution of LHC paste is 42cal/g lower than of OPC paste. At early age, the compressive strength development of LHC concrete is delayed, but the slump loss ratio of fresh concrete is reduced more than 20% with elapsed time. The penetrability of LHC is lower than that of OPC by 1/7.8 with the penetrability of chloride ion into the concrete until the age of 120 days. And the PD Index value of LHC is 0.44$\times$10-6 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, which indicates only 39.3% of OPC. From the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry test of cement past, we know that the pore size of LHC is more dense than that of OPC by production of C-S-H.

  • Making a transverse opening in concrete beams in order to accommodate utility services through the member instead of below or above of that, sometimes may be necessary. It is obvious that inclusions of an opening in a beam decreases its flexural and shear strengths. Fabricated steel bars are usually used to increase the capacity of the opening section, but details of reinforcements around the opening are dense and complex resulting in laborious pouring and setup process. The goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of using steel fibers in concrete mixture instead of complex reinforcement detailing order to strengthen opening section. Nonlinear finite element method was employed to investigate the behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. The numerical models were validated by comparison with experimental measurements tested by other investigators and then used to study the influence of fiber length, fiber aspect ratio and fiber content on the shear performance of SFRC slender beams with opening. Finally, it was concluded that the predicted shear strength enhancement is considerably influenced by use of steel fibers in concrete mixture but the effect of fiber length and fiber aspect ratio wasn't significant.
