  • This report compared and analyzed the degree of surface change and results of a deterioration experiment to assess the possibility of using Dobak glue as an adhesive in the fossilizing treatment of the paint layer in earthen mural paintings. The weathering experiments were performed with a color-difference meter (CR-400, MINOLTA). After the experiment, Cinnabar 3% specimens, which exhibited diverse changes in the durability test, were additionally tested with a reflection-transmission device (CARY-5000, AGILENT). Post UV degradation, most of the Dobak-glue samples exhibited lesser color change than animal-glue samples, and after moisture absorption and drying, the 0.5% and 3% Dobak samples displayed a lower degree of change in the value of color difference. Furthermore, results of the reflection-transmission test after deterioration indicated that Dobak glue presented a lesser color change than animal glue. Therefore, if Dobak glue is used as a consolidating agent, discoloration on account of degradation is minimal.

  • Fenton reaction is widely used as a out of cell method for evaluating the membrane electrochemical durability of Proton Exchange Fuel Cell (PEMFC). In this study, we investigated the factors affecting the Fenton reaction. In order to estimate the degree of the reaction, it is necessary to analyze the radicals as a product in the Fenton reaction. However, since the radicals are difficult to analyze, the degree of the reaction was measured by analyzing the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The activation energy was calculated from the rate of hydrogen peroxide change with temperature. The activation energy was 24.9 kJ/mol at 180 min. The Fenton reaction rate was affected by the iron ion concentration. At $80^{\circ}C$, 200 rpm, and $Fe^{2+}$ 80 ppm, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was decreased more than 20% even for 1 hour, which shows that frequent solution replacement increases the membrane degradation rate.

  • Organic nonlinear optical materials such as MNA(2-Methyl-4-nitro-aniline), Carbazole 1(5-Nitro-9-hydroxyethyl Carbazole), Carbazole 2(5-Nitro-9-ethyl Carbazole) and DR 1(Disperse Red 1) were incorporated into silica matrix to form a composite thin films. The thermal stability and degree of degradation were compared to these organic-inorganic composite film. Among those films, Carbazole 1 and DR 1 which have terminal -OH group showed enhanced stability for thermal degradation. The effect of polarization and degree of relaxation for the composite thin films incorporated with Carbazole 1 were measured by the absorbance change of UV spectra with time. With polarization treatment of Carbazole 1 incorporated composite film, the intensity of UV absorbance was remarkably reduced. And slow relaxation of Carbazole 1 molecule was suggested from the slightly recovered intensity of UV absorbance after removing the electric field at rooma temperature.

  • The hyaluronic acid (HA) polymers cross-linked with lactide (LA) using the crosslinking agent, 1,3-butadiene diepoxide (BD), were prepared in order to develop a biomedical material for tissue engineering. The degree of lactide and BD reaction of the crosslinked polymer was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Both degree of reaction and swelling ratio increased with BD concentration or LA/HA mole ratio. Tensile modulus decreased with increasing BD concentration or decreasing LA/HA mole ratio. Degradation was shown to be progressed at two different stages and became slow with increasing BD concentration. It was shown that the first stage degradation was mainly due to the decomposition of ester linkage in the crosslinked structure. The cell growth inhibition increased with BD concentration. Although cytotoxicity was slightly observed in the high BD concentration, the value was very low (below 6%) enough not to affect the cell growth.

  • Given a set S of n points in the plane, a minimum-diameter spanning tree(MDST) for the set might have a degree up to n-1. This might cause the degradation of the network performance because the node with high degree should handle much more requests than others relatively. Thus it is important to construct a spanning tree network with small degree and diameter. This paper presents an algorithm to construct a spanning tree for S satisfying the following four conditions: (1) the degree is controled as an input, (2) the tree diameter is no more than constant times the diameter of MDST, (3) the tree is monotone (even if arbitrary point is fixed as a root of the tree) in the sense that the Euclidean distance from the root to any node on the path to any leaf node is not decreasing, and (4) there are no crossings between edges of the tree. The monotone property will play a role as an aesthetic criterion in visualizing the tree in the plane.

  • The effects of compost inoculation on the degradation of cellulosic fraction in composting of food waste and paper mixture were investigated by bench-scale composting. With the increase of seed inoculation, the time to reach the peaks of temperature, $CO_2$ evolution rate, and ammonia evolution rate was reduced, indicating that seed compost had beneficial effects on the enhanced degradation of organic materials at the early stage of composting. However, the final conversion of organic matters and the loss of ammonia were not affected by the amount of seed compost inoculated. The increasing of seed inoculum also resulted in the higher level of cellulase activity at initial stages and rapid rise to the maximums, suggesting that initial supply of sufficient cellulolytic microorganisms might facilitate the evolution of cellulase activity. The cellulose was degraded substantially during the increasing phase of cellulase activity, while they showed similar values at the end of 20 days composting. As a result, the seed inoculation seemed to be effective to the enhanced evolution of cellulase activity and cellulose degradation at initial stage of composting. But it did not contribute to increase the final degradation of cellulose after the entire composting reaction of 20 days.

  • In attempt to develop a drug delivery system using serum albumin microspheres, bovine serum albumin microspheres containing antitumar agent. Cytarabine, were prepared. The shape, surface characteristics, size distribution, behavior of in vivo distribution, drug release behavior, and degradation of albumin microsphers in animal liver issue homogenate and proteolytic enzyme were investigated. The shape of albumin microspheres was spherical and the surface was smooth and compact. The size distribution of the albumin microspheres was effected by dispertion forces during emulsification and albumin concentration. Distribution of albumin microspheres after imtravenous administration in rabbit was achieved immediately. In vitro, albumin microsphere matrix was so hard that it retained most of cytarabine except initial burst during the first 10 minutes, and the level of drug release during the initial burst was affected by heating temperature, drug/albumin microsphere matrix was so hard that it retained most of cytarabine except initial burst during the first 10 minutes, and the level of drug release during the initial burst was affected by heating temperature, drug/albumin concentration ratio and size distribution. After drug release test, the morphology of albumin microspheres was not changed. Albumin microsphere matrix was degraded by the animal liver issue homogenate and proteolytic enzyme. The degree of degradation was affected by heating temperature.

  • The impact of sodium hydroxide, which is one of chemicals of clean in place (CIP) for removing membrane fouling, on the PVDF membrane is reviewed with respect to physical/chemical structural change, the permeability affected therefrom. Based on the cleaning concentration applied in membrane water treatment facilities, 10% of accumulated defluorination was confirmed up to 166g.hr/L which reflects the exposure time. However, membrane resistance was confirmed to be reduced by about 10%. Through FT-IR and EDS analysis, reduction of F and change of are confirmed as factors that affect the permeability of membrane. Membrane resistance, which affects permeability, is affected by loss of additives for hydrophilicity, rather than defluorination of PVDF material. Therefore, in order to check membrane degradation degree, an accelerated test by NaOH was carried out, loss of additives was confirmed, and then PVDF inherent characteristic was observed.

  • Small punch test was performed on CF8 duplex stainless steel aged at 370 and 400$^{\circ}C$ up to 5,000 h to evaluate the degree of the thermal aging embrittlement. At room temperature, the SP load-displacement curve was in a similar shape to those of ferritic steels and had a good reproducibility in spite of two-phase structure. The aging heat treatment resulted in a slight increase of the yield strength. As test temperature was lowered, the SP load showed a sudden drop followed by serrations before the SP specimen was fractured, resulting from the cracking of ferrite phase. The extent of thermal embrittlement was assessed in terms of the SP energy. Aging treatment at higher temperature led to a larger shift in the transition temperature and the corresponding change in the fracture mode. The main cause of the degradation was the embrittlement of ferrite phase. Additionally the phase boundary separation profoundly contributed to the degradation of the specimen aged at 400$^{\circ}C$.
