A combination of the instrumented indentation and 3D morphology measurement has been tried in order to perform a real-time property measurement of degraded materials in gas pipelines; three-dimensional indent morphologies were recorded using a reflective laser scanner after a series of insturmented indentations on three metallic specimens. Dimensions of the permanent deformation zone and contact boundary were analyzed from the cross-sectional profile over an remnant indent and used for estimating yield strength and hardness, respectively. Estimated yield strength was comparable with that from uniaxial tensile test and actual hardness implying material pile-up effects was lower than the calculated value from indentation curve by $20{\sim}30%$. It means that this 3D image analysis can explain the material pile-up effects on the contact properties. Additionally, a combined system of indentation and laser sensor was newly designed by modifying a shape of the indentation loading fixture.
Paper relics are affected by a number of complex physical, chemical, biological and artificial damaging factors due to the vulnerability of organic materials. Wet cleaning is a conservation treatment method for removing pollutants from paper artefacts. This study was carried out in order to analyse the effect of wet cleaning on Hanji (Traditional Korean paper made from mulberry trees) which is the main material used in Korean paper relics (historical paper documents). For this study, the color change and folding endurance of artificially degraded paper was analysed before and after immersion wet cleaning. The result showed that washing each twice in 30 minutes is the most appropriate method for obtaining cleaning efficiency and material stability.

A lithium-ion battery exhibits high energy density but has many limitations due to safety issues. Currently, as a solution for this, research on solid state batteries is attracting attention and is actively being conducted. Among the solid electrolytes, sulfide-based solid electrolytes are receiving much attention with high ion conductivity, but there is a limit to commercialization due to the relatively high price of lithium sulfide, which is a precursor material. This study focused on the possibility of relatively inexpensive and light lithium hydride and conducted an experiment on it. In order to analyze the characteristics of LiAlH4, ion conductivity and thermal stability were measured, and a composites mixed with PVDF, a representative polymer electrolyte, was synthesized to confirm a change in characteristics. And metallurgical changes in the material were performed through XRD, SEM, and BET analysis, and ion conductivity and thermal stability were measured by EIS and LFA methods. As a result, Li3AlH6 having ion conductivity higher than LiAlH4 is formed by the synthesis of composite materials, and thus ion conductivity is slightly improved, but thermal stability is rapidly degraded due to structural irregularity.
Cobalt-chromium (CoCr)-based alloys have been used for wear applications because of their excellent mechanical properties and wear resistance. With growing concern over environmental problems, CoCr alloys are expected to be used for various tribological applications in degraded lubrication states. To expand the applicability of the materials, data should be accumulated across a broad spectrum of experimental parameters. In this work, the friction and wear characteristics of cobalt-chromium-tungsten (CoCrW) and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are investigated experimentally. The tests are conducted using a pin-on-reciprocating-plate tribotester in dry lubrication. CoCrW and CoCrMo are used as pin and plate materials to investigate the effect of the counter material. The results show that the friction coefficients between CoCrW and CoCrMo generally range from 0.4 to 0.5. The friction coefficient between the CoCrW pin and plate is found to be slightly small. However, the total wear between the CoCrW pin and plate is found to be the largest. In contrast, the total wear between the CoCrW pin and plate is relatively small. Furthermore, CoCrW may cause a faster wear progression of CoCrMo, especially for the case in which CoCrMo is used as the pin material. The results of this work provide a better understanding of the tribological properties of CoCrW and CoCrMo alloys. In addition, this work provides a practical guideline for the use of CoCrW and CoCrMo from the tribological design viewpoint.

Unstable cosmetic active ingredients could be degraded rapidly by chemical and photochemical process. Particularly, some of active ingredients like retinol are known to cause skin irritation when applied on the skin excessively. Therefore, it has become a very important issue to encapsulate cosmetic actives for the stabilization and skin protection. This study was performed in order to prepare a chitosan microcapsule containing liposoluble cosmetic actives and to investigate the stabilization effect of actives when chitosan microcapsule was applied in cosmetic formulation. Chitosan, deacetylated form of chitin, has been of interest in the industrial applications due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, antimicrobial activity and also used as a wall material of capsule. Retinol was used as a core material and was stabilized by a wall of chitosan and antioxidants. The chitosan microcapsule containing retinol(CMR) was prepared by using coacervation method and W$_1$/O/W$_2$ emulsification techniques. The CMR has 0.5~10.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size distribution and a long-term stability of more than an year inside the cosmetic formulation(O/W). Remaining retinol percentages at 45$^{\circ}C$ after 8 weeks in the CMR dispersion were 15.6%(pH 4.0), 59.8%(pH 6.0) and 65.0%(pH 6.0 with antioxidant) respectively. Retinol stability when added CMR inside a ONV emulsion was better than that of ONV emulsion added non-capsulated retinol. As a result, remaining retinol at 45$^{\circ}C$ after 8 weeks in O/W emulsion added non-capsulated retinol and O/W emulsion containing CMR was 12.7%, 70.5% respectively. It appeared that chitosan treated microcapsule may be used for a potential encapsulation method of unstable active ingredients.

The durability of marine concrete structure is severely degraded by corrosion due to penetration and diffusion of chloride. So, many researches have been performed to improve the durability in marine concrete structure. In this study, the concrete members mixed with the mineral admixtures(SF and BFS), the epoxy-coated steel, and corrosion inhibitors are prepared, and four-point bending test of specimens are performed to investigate the flexural behaviors and the applicability for marine concrete structure. From the test results, the mineral admixtures and inhibitors are useful for safety against the initial cracking and the bending resistance in specimens. When the durable material is used in specimen, the tensile stress of reinforcing rod was less variable in same bending span length, and the durable member showed a stable behavior. And it is evaluated that the crack spacing is not larger in specimen used the durable material.
To evaluate the flexural deformation and strength of composite motor case above the glass transition temperature$(T_g),\;170^{\circ}C$, of resin material, a finite element analysis(FEA) model in which material non-linearity and progressive failure mode were considered was proposed. The laminated flexural specimens which have the same lay-up and thickness as the composite motor case were tested by 4-point bending test to verify the validity of FEA model. Also. mechanical properties in high temperature were evaluated to obtain the input values for FEA. Because the material properties related to resin material were highly deteriorated in the temperature range beyond $T_g$, the flexural stiffness and strength of laminated flexural specimen in $200^{\circ}C$ were degraded by also $70\%\;and\;80\%$ in comparison with normal temperature results. Above $T_g$, the failure mode was changed from progressive failure mode initiated by matrix cracking at $90^{\circ}$ ply in bottom side and terminated by delamination at the center line of specimen to fiber compressive breakage mode at top side. From stress analysis, the progressive failure mechanism was well verified and the predicted bending stiffness and strength showed a good agreement with the test results.

The heartwood of cengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is known to have a high degree of decay resistance by virtue of its high extractive content. After 30 years in ground contact an utility pole of this tropical hardwood was found to be degraded only in the surface layers by cavity-forming soft rot fungi. The present work was undertaken 1) to characterize the degradation of cengal heartwood from the aspect of ultrastructure and chemistry and 2) to investigate the correlation between soft rot decay and its extractive microdistribution in wood tissues. The chemical analysis of cengal heartwood revealed the presence of a high amount of extractives as well as lignin. The wood contained a relatively high amount of condensed lignin and the guaiacyl units. Microscopic observations revealed that vessels, fibers and parenchyma cells (both ray and axial parenchyma) all contained extractives in their lumina, but in variable amounts. The lumina of fibers and most axial parenchyma were completely or almost completely filled with the extractives. TEM micrographs showed that cell walls were also impregnated with extractives and that pit membranes connecting parenchyma cells were well coated and impregnated with extractives. However, fungal hyphae were present in the extractive masses localized in cell lumina, and indications were that the extractives did not completely inhibit fungal growth. The extent of cell wall degradation varied with tissue types. The fibers appeared to be more susceptible to decay than vessels and parenchyma. Middle lamella was the only cell wall region which remained intact in all cell types which were severely degraded. The microscopic observations suggested a close correlation between extractive microdistribution and the pattern and extent of cell wall degradation. In addition to the toxicity to fungi, the physical constraint of the extractive material present in cengal heartwood cells is likely to have a profound effect on the growth and path of invasion of colonizing fungi, thus conferring protection to wood by restricting fungal entry into cell walls. The presence of relatively high amount of condensed lignin is also likely to be a factor in the resistance of cengal heartwood to soft rot decay.

The present study focuses on simulating river profile changes downstream of the Daecheong multipurpose dam by using the computer program HEC-6, which was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The dam locates at the Keum river, a typical alluvial stream, whose bed material is composed mostly of fine and medium sands. The study reveals that after the completion of dam, a 15 km long reach downstream from the regulatory dam was severely degraded by about 2~3 m. No further severe degradation of this reach is expected, however, because the river-bed of this reach has been well armored since then with gravels and cobbles. Some places in the study reach were degraded locally by 2 m, due mainly to the large-scale gravel mining activities in that reach. On the other hand, a 20 km long reach in downstream study reach is aggraded more or less by 0.5~1 m. Calculation by the computer program HEC-6 is close to measurement for the study river reach. According to the results by HEC-6, the study river reach would remain generally stable in the future, except a few places in the mid-upstream where further river-bed degradation of 1~2 m would occur and a few places in the far downstream where local river-bed aggradations of about 0.5 m would occur.

This study was performed to encapsulate low molecular weight marine collagen and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-producing lactic acid bacteria to inhibit degradation and improve survival rate during exposure to adverse conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract. Calcium-alginate method was used for the manufacture of a double-layered coated capsule. The inner core material was composed of collagen and lactic acid bacteria, and the coating materials were alginate and chitosan. The sizes and shapes of the double-coated capsule were affected mainly by centrifuge speed and pH. Manufactured capsules were observed with a scanning electron microscope and by confocal laser scanning microscopy to confirm the micromorphological changes of capsules and bacterial cells. As a result, double-layered coated capsules were not degraded at pH 1.2, whereas degradation occurred at pH 7.4. In addition, GABA and collagen were maintained in stable state at pH 1.2. Therefore, double-layered coated capsules developed in this study would not be degraded in the stomach and could be stably delivered to the small intestine to benefit intestinal and dermatic health.
