  • It has been reported that the ethanolic extract of the root of Piper methysticum (P. methysticum) inhibits melanogenesis in melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH)-activated B16 melanoma cells. Flavokawain B (FKB) and Flavokawain C (FKC) isolated from this extract have been found to inhibit melanin production based on anti-melanogenesis activity. This study was designed to find out the inhibition and its process of FKB and FKC on melanin synthesis in melan-a melanocytes. FKB and FKC inhibited melanogenesis at 10 μM, 5 μM respectively in melan-a melanocytes. However, they did not inhibit extracellular tyrosinase activity from melan-a melanocytes. FKB reduced the protein level of tyrosinase (Tyr), tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1), tyrosinase-related protein 2 (TRP-2), microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and the mRNA level of Tyr and TRP-1. FKC reduced the protein level of TRP-2 and MITF and the mRNA level of TRP-1 and Tyr. The reduced expression of Tyr and TRP-1 might be resulted from the decreased MITF which regulates major melanogenic proteins. However, since the mRNA expression of MITF did not change by FKB and FKC treatment, the effects of FKB and FKC on extracellular signal regulating kinase (ERK)/AKT phosphorylation, known to regulate the degradation of MITF, were confirmed. FKB and FKC significantly increased the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, not in AKT. These results suggest that FKB and FKC may be helpful as a potential depigmenting agent for various hyper-pigmentary disorders.

  • To enhance the photocatalytic activities of WO3 photocatalysts, fluorine doping was performed to induce the oxygen vacancies. Both plasma and direct vaper fluorination were carried out for fluorine doping, and photocatalytic activities were examined by using methylene blue dye. Oxygen vacancies of the plasma and direct vaper fluorinated WO3 photocatalysts were measured to be 14.65 and 18.59%, which increased to about 23 and 56% at pristine WO3 photocatalysts. The degradation efficiency of methylene blue was also determined about 1.7 and 3.4 times higher than pristine WO3 photocatalysts, respectively, depending on oxygen vacancies increased. In addition, it was confirmed that the bandgap process energy decreased from 2.95 eV to 2.64 and 2.45 eV after fluorine doping. From this result, it is considered that the direct vaper fluorination has an advantage for increasing the photocatalytic activities of WO3 compared to that of the plasma fluorination.

  • Recently, diverse devices using different wireless technologies are gradually increasing in the IoT environment. In particular, it is essential to design an efficient feature extraction approach and detect the exact types of radio signals in order to accurately identify various radio signal modulation techniques. However, it is difficult to gather labeled wireless signal in a real environment due to the complexity of the process. In addition, various learning techniques based on deep learning have been proposed for wireless signal classification. In the case of deep learning, if the training dataset is not enough, it frequently meets the overfitting problem, which causes performance degradation of wireless signal classification techniques using deep learning models. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network(GAN) based on data augmentation techniques to improve classification performance when various wireless signals exist. When there are various types of wireless signals to be classified, if the amount of data representing a specific radio signal is small or unbalanced, the proposed solution is used to increase the amount of data related to the required wireless signal. In order to verify the validity of the proposed data augmentation algorithm, we generated the additional data for the specific wireless signal and implemented a CNN and LSTM-based wireless signal classifier based on the result of balancing. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy of the proposed solution is higher than when the data is unbalanced.

  • Vegetation is the basis for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. In the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which is the most direct and efficient policy measure to prevent degradation of nature, vegetation-related assessment has limitations as it is not based on quantitative and scientific methods. In addition, it focuses on the presence of protected species; hence, it does not take into account the role of vegetation as a habitat on a wide-area scale. As a way to overcome these limitations, this study aims to contribute to the quantification and advancement of future EIA on vegetation. Through the review of previous studies, core areas, connectivity, and vegetation condition were derived as the items to be dealt within the macroscopic aspect of vegetation impact assessment. Each item was spatially constructed using land cover maps and satellite imageries, and time series change analysis was performed. As a result, it was found that vegetation has been continuously deteriorating due to development in all aspects, and in particular, development adversely affects not only the inside of the project site but also the surrounding area. Although this study suggested the direction for improvement of the EIA in the vegetation sector based on data analysis, a more specific methodology needs to be established in order to apply it to the actual EIA process. By actively utilizing various environmental spatial data, the impact of the development on the natural ecosystem can be minimized.

  • Recently, With the recent rapid development of technology, the amount of data generated by various systems is increasing, and enterprise servers and data centers that have to handle large amounts of big data need to apply high-stability and high-performance storage devices even if costs increase. In such systems, SSD(solid state disk) that provide high performance of read/write are often used as storage devices. However, due to the characteristics of reading and writing on a page-by-page basis, erasing operations on a block basis, and erassing-before-writing, there is a problem that performance is degraded when duplicate writes occur. Therefore, in order to delay this performance degradation problem, over-provision technology of SSD has been applied internally. However, since over-provided technologies have the disadvantage of consuming a lot of storage space instead of performance, the application of inefficient technologies above the right performance has a problem of over-costing. In this paper, we proposed a method of measuring the performance and cost incurred when various over-provisions are applied in an SSD and predicting the system-optimized over-provided ratio based on this. Through this research, we expect to find a trade-off with costs to meet the performance requirements in systems that process big data.

  • Ubiquitination is a post-translational modification that is involved in the quality control of proteins and responsible for modulating a variety of cellular physiological processes. Protein ubiquitination and deubiquitination are reversible processes that regulate the stability of target substrates. The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) helps regulate tumor-promoting processes, such as DNA repair, cell cycle, apoptosis, metastasis, and angiogenesis. The UPS comprises a combination of ubiquitin, ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2), and ubiquitin-ligase enzymes (E3), which complete the degradation of target proteins. Ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (UBE2s) play an inter-mediate role in the UPS process by moving activated ubiquitin to target proteins through E3 ligases. UBE2s consist of 40 members and are classified according to conserved catalytic ubiquitin-conjugating (UBC) domain-flanking extensions in humans. Since UBE2s have specificity to substrates like E3 ligase, the significance of UBE2 has been accentuated in tumorigenesis. The dysregulation of multiple E2 enzymes and their critical roles in modulating oncogenic signaling pathways have been reported in several types of cancer. The elevation of UBE2 expression is correlated with a worse prognosis in cancer patients. In this review, we summarize the basic functions and regulatory mechanisms of UBE2s and suggest the possibility of their use as therapeutic targets for cancer.

  • In order to understand biogeochemical cycles of organic carbon in the permeable intertidal sandy sediments of the Nakdong estuary, we estimated the organic carbon production and consumption rates both in situ and in the laboratory. The Chl-a content of the sediment and the nutrient concentrations in below surface pore water in the sandy sediment were lower than in the muddy sediment. The sediment oxygen consumption rates were relatively high, especially when compared with rates reported from other coastal muddy sediments with higher organic carbon contents. This implied that both the organic carbon degradation and material transport in the sandy sediment were enhanced by advection-related process. The simple mass balance estimation of organic carbon fluxes showed that the major sources of carbon in the sediment would originate from benthic microalgae and detrital organic carbon derived from salt marsh. The daily natural biocatalzed filtration, extrapolated from filtration rates and the total area of the Nakdong estuary, was one order higher than the maximum capability of sewage plants in Busan metropolitan city. This implies that the sandy sediment contributes greatly to biogeochemical purification in the area, and is important for the re-distribution of materials in the coastal environment.

  • The increase of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content in recycled asphalt concrete (RAC) is accompanied by the degradation of low-temperature cracking resistance, which has become an obstacle to the development of RAC. This paper aims to reveal the meso-scale mechanisms of the low-temperature fracture behavior of RAC and provide a theoretical basis for the economical recycling of RAP. For this purpose, micromechanical heterogeneous peridynamic model of RAC was established and validated by comparing three-point bending (TPB) test results against corresponding numerical simulation results of RAC with 50% RAP content. Furthermore, the models with different aggregate shapes (i.e., average aggregates circularity (${\bar{C_r}}=1.00$, 0.75, and 0.50) and RAP content (i.e., 0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) were constructed to investigate the effect of aggregate shape and RAP content on the low-temperature cracking resistance. The results show that peridynamic models can accurately simulate the low-temperature fracture behavior of RAC, with only 2.9% and 13.9% differences from the TPB test in flexural strength and failure strain, respectively. On the meso-scale, the damage in the RAC is mainly controlled by horizontal tensile stress and the stress concentration appears in the interface transition zone (ITZ). Aggregate shape has a significant effect on the low-temperature fracture resistance, i.e., higher aggregate circularity leads to better low-temperature performance. The large number of microcracks generated during the damage evolution process for the peridynamic model with circular aggregates contributes to slowing down the fracture, whereas the severe stress concentration at the corners leads to the fracture of the aggregates with low circularity under lower stress levels. The effect of RAP content below 30% or above 50% is not significant, but a substantial reduction (16.9% in flexural strength and 16.4% in failure strain) is observed between the RAP content of 30% and 50%. This reduction is mainly attributed to the fact that the damage in the ITZ region transfers significantly to the aggregates, especially the RAP aggregates, when the RAP content ranges from 30% to 50%.

  • The evolution of the Distributed Denial of Service Attack(DDoS Attack) method has increased the difficulty in the detection process. One of the solutions to overcome the problems caused by the limitations of the existing victim-side detection method was the source-side detection technique. However, there was a problem of performance degradation due to network traffic irregularities. In order to solve this problem, research has been conducted to detect attacks using a collaborative network between several nodes based on artificial intelligence. Existing methods have shown limitations, especially in nonlinear traffic environments with high Burstness and jitter. To overcome this problem, this paper presents a collaborative source-side DDoS attack detection technique introduced with an attention mechanism. The proposed method aggregates detection results from multiple sources and assigns weights to each region, and through this, it is possible to effectively detect overall attacks and attacks in specific few areas. In particular, it shows a high detection rate with a low false positive of about 6% and a high detection rate of up to 4.3% in a nonlinear traffic dataset, and it can also confirm improvement in attack detection problems in a small number of regions compared to methods that showed limitations in the existing nonlinear traffic environment.

  • To evaluate the safety status of deteriorated segments in a submarine shield tunnel during its service life, a seepage model was established based on a cross-sea shield tunnel project. This model was used to study the migration patterns of erosive ions within the shield segments. Based on these laws, the degree of deterioration of the segments was determined. Using the derived analytical solution, the internal forces within the segments were calculated. Lastly, by applying the formula for calculating safety factors, the variation trends in the safety factors of segments with different degrees of deterioration were obtained. The findings demonstrate that corrosive seawater presents the evolution characteristics of continuous seepage from the outside to the inside of the tunnel. The nearby seepage field shows locally concentrated characteristics when there is leakage at the joint, which causes the seepage field's depth and scope to significantly increase. The chlorine ion content decreases gradually with the increase of the distance from the outer surface of the tunnel. The penetration of erosion ions in the segment is facilitated by the presence of water pressure. The ion content of the entire ring segment lining structure is related in the following order: vault < haunch < springing. The difference in the segment's rate of increase in chlorine ion content decreases as service time increases. Based on the analytical solution calculation, the segment's safety factor drops more when the joint leaks than when its intact, and the change rate between the two states exhibits a general downward trend. The safety factor shows a similar change rule at different water depths and continuously decreases at the same segment position as the water depth increases. The three phases of "sudden drop-rise-stability" are represented by a "spoon-shaped" change rule on the safety factor's change curve. The issue of the poor applicability of indicators in earlier studies is resolved by the analytical solution, which only requires determining the loss degree of the segment lining's effective bearing thickness to calculate the safety factor of any cross-section of the shield tunnel. The analytical solution's computation results, however, have some safety margins and are cautious. The process of establishing the evaluation model indicates that the secondary lining made of molded concrete can also have its safety status assessed using the analytical solution. It is very important for the safe operation of the tunnel and the safety of people's property and has a wide range of applications.
