  • In this study, according to drainage condition (undrained and drained) in ground, the settlement and horizontal displacement of caisson quay wall and apron in Yeongilman port due to excess pore water pressure in ground induced by the magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Pohang on November 15, 2017. In general, seismic response analysis was carried out under undrained drainage condition, but in this study, drain drainage analysis was conducted to estimate displacement during earthquake as well as an additional displacement due to dissipation of excess pore water pressure after earthquake. The result of after earthquake can not be known under undrained drainage condition. Results cleary showed that the behavior of structure and ground was dependent on drainage condition in ground. Especially, based on the drained drainage condition, the additional displacement was clearly detected due to dissipation of excess pore water pressure after earthquake. Which indicates that both results are different to drainage condition in ground, and therefore, drainage condition analysis is necessary to accurately estimate the behavior of ground and structure in seismic response analysis.

  • 2-D numerical methods have been applied to analyze the stability of tunnels because of computation efficiency, though the ground around the tunnel under construction shows 3-D reformational behaviour due to the transverse and longitudinal arching effects. Load distribution factors are introduced to the 2-D analysis for the consideration of the effects of the tunnel advance in three dimensions. The load distribution factors influence significantly the ground deformation and the load of primary supports like shotcrete and rockbolts. According to the previous studies for 3-D numerical studies. it was shown that load distribution factors were heavily dependent on the ground deformational properties, tunnel size and the advance length of a tunnel. However, as the quantitative methods evaluating the factors have not been presented yet, constant values have been assigned to the factors for 2-D analysis even if the conditions for tunnel design are different. Accordingly, this paper presents the method to evaluate quantitatively the load distribution factors through the regression analysis of 3-D analysis data on 72 design cases. Also, new modification to the load distribution factors are suggested for the ring-cut excavation method because the conventional 2-D analysis is not able to consider the support effects of the core left on the tunnel face.

  • It is well known that thermal deformation of electronic packages with Pb-Sn solder and with lead-free solder is significantly affected by material properties consisting the package, as well as those of the solder itself. In this paper, the method for determining coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of new material is established by using temperature characteristic of strain gages, and the CTE of molding compound are obtained experimentally. The temperature-dependent CTE of molding compound for Pb-Sn solder and that for lead-free solder are obtained by using strain measurements with well known steel specimen and aluminium specimen as reference specimens, and the CTE's are also measured non-contactly by using moire interferometry. Those results are compared, and the agreement between the two types of strain gage experiment and the moire experiment show the strain gage method used in this paper to be reliable. In the case of the molding compound for Pb-Sn solder, the CTE is measured as approximately $15.8ppm/^{\circ}C$ regardless of the temperature. In the case for the lead-free solder, the CTE is measured as of approximately $9.9ppm/^{\circ}C$ below the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, and then the CTE is increased sharply depending on the temperature, and reaches to $15.0ppm/^{\circ}C$ at $130^{\circ}C$.

  • Hertzian indentation tests with spherical indenters in water were conducted to examine the contact fatigue in three dental ceramics, such as feldspathic porcelain, micaceous glass-ceramic (MGC) and glass-infiltrated alumina, which was used as dental restorations, and evaluated the effect of contact damage on strength. Initial damage was dependent of microstructure, showing cone cracks of brittle behavior in the feldspathic porcelain and deformation of quasi-plastic behavior in the MGC, with an intermediate case in the glass-infiltrated alumina. However, as increasing the number of cyclic loading (n=1~n =$10^6$)all materials showed an abrupt strength degradation, at which fracture was originated from damage in the contact fatigue. There were two strength degradation with increasing the number of cyclic loading in specific loads (200N, 500N, 1000N):first was from the cone cracks, and second was from the radial cracks created by cyclic loading. The radial cracks, once formed, led to rapid degradation in strength properties, Finally the material was failed at the high number of cyclic loading. Strength degradation with indentation load at fixed number of cyclic loading indicated that the feldspathic porcelain should be highly damage tolerant to the contact fatigue.

  • This paper deals with the fracture simulation of UHPFRC girder with the interface type model. Based on the existing numerical simulation of quasi-brittle fracture in normal strength concrete, constitutive modeling for UHPFRC I-girder has been improved by including a tensile hardening at the failure surface. The finite element formulation is based on a triangular unit, constructed from constant strain triangles, with nodes along its sides and neither at the vertex nor the center of the unit. Fracture is simulated through a hardening/softening fracture constitutive law in tension, a softening fracture constitutive law in shear as well as in compression at the boundary nodes, with the material within the triangular unit remaining linear elastic. LCP is used to formulate the path-dependent hardening-softening behavior in non-holonomic rate form and a mathematical programming algorithm is employed to solve the LCP. The piece-wise linear inelastic yielding-failure/failure surface is modeled with two compressive caps, two Mohr-Coulomb failure surfaces, a tensile yielding surface and a tensile failure surface. The comparison between test results and numerical results indicates this method effectively simulates the deformation and failure of specimen.

  • Semiconductor packages are increasingly moving toward miniaturization, lighter and multi-functions for mobile application, which requires highly integrated multi-stack package. To meet the industrial demand, the package and silicon chip become thinner, and ultra-thin packages will show serious reliability problems such as warpage, crack and other failures. These problems are mainly caused by the mismatch of various package materials and geometric dimensions. In this study we perform the numerical analysis of the warpage deformation and thermal stress of 4-layer stacked FBGA package after EMC molding and reflow process, respectively. After EMC molding and reflow process, the package exhibits the different warpage characteristics due to the temperature-dependent material properties. Key material properties which affect the warpage of package are investigated such as the elastic moduli and CTEs of EMC and PCB. It is found that CTE of EMC material is the dominant factor which controls the warpage. The results of RSM optimization of the material properties demonstrate that warpage can be reduced by $28{\mu}m$. As the silicon die becomes thinner, the maximum stress of each die is increased. In particular, the stress of the top die is substantially increased at the outer edge of the die. This stress concentration will lead to the failure of the package. Therefore, proper selection of package material and structural design are essential for the ultra-thin die packages.

  • In the development of geodynamic structures such as subduction and rift zones, a weakening mechanism is essential for localized weak zone formation in the lithosphere. Shear heating, a weakening mechanism, generates short-wavelength temperature elevation in the lithosphere; the increased temperature can reduce lithospheric strength and promote its breakup. A two-dimensional elastoplastic extensional basin model was used to conduct benchmarking based on previous numerical simulation studies to quantitatively analyze shear heating. The amount of shear heating was investigated by controlling the yield strength, extensional velocity, and strain- and temperature-dependent weakening. In the absence of the weakening mechanism, the higher yield strength and extensional velocity led to more vigorous shear heating. The reference model with a 100-MPa yield strength and 2-cm/year extension showed a temperature increase of ~ 50 K when the bulk extension was 20 km (i.e., 0.025 strain). However, in the yield-strength weakening mechanism, depending on the plastic strain and temperature, more efficient weakening induced stronger shear heating, which indicates positive feedback between the weakening mechanism and the shear heating. The rate of shear heating rapidly increased at the initial stage of deformation, and the rate decreased by 80% as the lithosphere weakened. This suggests that shear heating with the weakening mechanism can significantly influence the strength of relatively undamaged lithosphere.

  • An integrated sediment management approach that includes the recovery of the amount of declined sediment supply is effective as a fundamental solution to coastal erosion. During planning, it is essential to analyze the transfer mechanism of the sediments generated from estuaries (the junction between a river and sea) to assess the amount and rate of sediment discharge (from the river to sea) supplied back to the coast. Although numerical models that interpret the tidal sand bar flushing process during flooding have been studied, thus far, there has been no study focusing on the formation and development processes of tidal sand bars. Therefore, this study aims to construct wave deformation, flow regime calculation, and topographic change analysis models to assess the amount of recovered sediment discharge and reproduce the tidal sand bar formation process through numerical analysis for integrated littoral drift management. The tidal sand bar formation process was simulated, and the wave energy and duration of action concepts were implemented to predict the long-term littoral movement. The river flux and wave conditions during winter when tidal sand bars dominantly develop were considered as the external force conditions required for calculation. The initial condition of the topographic data directly after the Maeupcheon tidal sand bar flushing during flooding was set as the initial topography. Consequently, the tidal sand bar formation and development due to nearshore currents dependent on the incident wave direction were reproduced. Approximately 66 h after the initial topography, a sand bar formation was observed at the Maengbang estuary.

  • This paper is concerned with the strain characteristics of the time effect on the remoulded saturated day sampled from the downstream of the Yeongsan river, and the constitutive equation that can generally explain time-dependent behaviors of norma1ly consolidated clay. This paper examines whether or not the afore-said constitutive equation can be applied to the remoulded Mooan-clay. Throughout this study, the conclusions obtained are as follows. 1. Throughout the isotropic consolidation test for 7 days and the isotropic relaxation test, the existence of the static and dynamic yielding surfaces is confirmed respectively. 2. The characteristics of time effect of the deformation, namely, the existence of a unique stress-strain-time relation, is conformed from the experimental result on the Mooan-clay. 3. The prodictions of the stress path and the strain on the Cam-clay theory is not consistent with those observed during the experiments. 4. Constitutive equation(2-3-12) obtained by applying Cam-clay theory to Perzyna's elastic-viscoplasticity theory can explain the behavior of pore water pressure during isotropic stress relaxation, concerned with time dependency under undrained condition. The equation can also explain the results of the undrained triaxial compression test for the clay with different strain rate under the same or different consolidation history. 5. This constitutive equation has eight material parameters which can be determined from triaxial compression tests.

  • To discover new functional materials using edible plants, antioxidant activities of methanol extracts from various parts of seven wild vegetables were investigated in vitro. Total polyphenol contents, determined by Folin-Denis method, varied from 16.74 to $130.22{\mu}g/mg$. Radical-scavenging activities of methanol extracts were examined using ${\alpha},\;{\alpha}-diphenyl-{\beta}-pirrylhydrazyl$ (DPPH) radicals and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay. Inhibition effects on peroxidation of linoleic acid determined by ferric thiocyanate (FTC) method and on oxidative degradation of 2-deoxy-D-ribose in Fenton-type reaction system were dose-dependent. Athyrium acutipinulum Kodama (leaf and rood), Achyranthes japonica (Miq.) Nakai (seed), and Solidago virga-aurea var. gigantea Nakai (root) showed relatively high antioxidant activities in various systems.
