The structural members must be designed to control characteristics of energy absorption for protecting passengers in a car accident. Study on collapse characteristics of structural member is currently conducted in parallel with other studies on effective energy absorption capacity of structural members with diverse cross-sectional shapes and various materials. This study concerns the crashworthiness of the widely used vehicle structural members, square thin-walled tubes, which are excellent in the point of the energy absorption capacity. The absorbed energy, mean collapse load and deformation mode were analyzed for side member which absorbs most of the collision energy. To predict and control the energy absorption, controller is designed in consideration of its influence on height, thickness and width ration in this study. The absorbed energy and mean collapse load of square tubes were increased by $15{\sim}20%$ in using the controller, and energy absorbing capability of the specimen was slightly changed by change of the high controller's height.
This paper proposed a new self-centering brace (SCB), which consists of four post-tensioned (PT) high strength steel strands and energy absorbing steel plate (EASP) clusters. First, analytical equations were derived to describe the working principle of the SCB. Then, to investigate the hysteretic performance of the SCB, four full-size specimens were manufactured and subjected to the same cyclic loading protocol. One additional specimen using only EASP clusters was also tested to highlight the contribution of PT strands. The test parameters varied in the testing process included the thickness of the EASP and the number of EASP in each cluster. Testing results shown that the SCB exhibited nearly flag-shape hysteresis up to expectation, including excellent recentering capability and satisfactory energy dissipating capacity. For all the specimens, the ratio of the recovered deformation is in the range of 89.6% to 92.1%, and the ratio of the height of the hysteresis loop to the yielding force is in the range of 0.47 to 0.77. Finally, in order to further understand the mechanism of the SCB and provide additional information to the testing results, the high-fidelity finite element (FE) models were established and the numerical results were compared against the experimental data. Good agreement between the experimental, numerical, and analytical results was observed, and the maximum difference is less than 12%. Parametric analysis was also carried out based on the validated FE model to evaluate the effect of some key parameters on the cyclic behavior of the SCB.
In this study, the deformation and stress on each model was analyzed and the strength was compared with each other when the impacts on a total of four smart phone models was given. Models B and D with cases can be seen to have less deformation and stress than models A and C without cases. The models including the case have higher masses than the models without the case. So, the deformation and stress can be reduced by absorbing the impact force. In addition, the masses of models C and D are smaller than models A and B, but the stresses and deformations are seen to be smaller. If a case specialized for edge protection is chosen and designed when manufacturing a smart-phone in order to absorb the shock while weighing less, it is thought to improve the strength of the smart-phone and increase the durability. And it is seen that this study is adequate at the efficient design with durability of smart phone case practically and the aesthetic convergence of smart phone.
This study carried out the structural analysis and vibration analysis on scooter seat. By comparing with three kinds of B-bone A, Julio B, and City Ace C, the load was applied to scooter seat as much as a weight of person. Through structural analysis, this study examined which seat is most deformed by comparing the deformation each other or affords passengers most convenience and does not afford passengers the inconvenience by absorbing the vibration during driving. Model C has the most total deformation at the structural analysis result and Model B is seen to be changed to be convenient to sit the deformation as it deforms largely. Through this study, which seat is most convenient and becomes strong on durability can be confirmed. As the durability analysis result data of scooter seat model obtained on the basis of this study result are utilized, the esthetic sense can be shown by being grafted onto the machine or structure at real life.

In proportion to increasing interest in vehicle safety, many country have regulated vehicle safety and performed NCAP(New Car Assessment Program). However vehicles which had good results in these compliance and NCAP frontal crash test have caused problems such as the fork effect and over-riding in real car-to-car accidents. To complement these issues, new frontal crash test modes using new barrier like FWDB and PDB have been developed by EEVC WG15. In this paper, FWDB frontal crash test was performed and the result was compared with the full frontal crash test using the rigid wall in order to comprehend the characteristic of FWDB. The results of FWDB test were compared with one of USNCAP and KNCAP. Using USNCAP data, vehicle performance like deformation and wall force were studied. A comparative study of dummy injuries was made by using KNCAP result. The results showed that vehicle performance of FWDB test like displacement and effective acceleration was similar in spite of absorbing energy of FWDB due to the greater vehicle deformation of rigid wall test. In FWDB test, driver dummy head bottomed out but most of injuries were superior to the injury of rigid wall test.

Undergoing large volumetric changes upon incremental environmental stimulation, hydrogels are interesting materials which hold immense potentials for utilization in a wide array of applications in diverse industries. Owing to the large magnitudes of deformation it undergoes, swelling induced instability is a commonly observed sight in all types of gels. In this work, we investigate the instability of photo-thermal sensitive hydrogels, produced by impregnating light absorbing nano-particles into the polymer network of a temperature sensitive hydrogel, such as PNIPAM. Earlier works have shown that by using lights of different intensities, these hydrogels follow different swelling trends. We investigate the possibility of utilizing this fact for remote switching applications. The analysis is built on a thermodynamic framework of inhomogeneous large deformation of hydrogels and implemented via commercial finite element software, ABAQUS. Various examples of swelling induced instabilities, and its corresponding dependence on light intensity, will be investigated. We show that the instabilities that arise have their morphologies dependent on the light intensity.

In this study the structural design concepts of main parameters of a Cathode Ray Tube(CRT) such as frame spring and shadow mask were proposed to guarantee a failure-proof CRT under mechanical shock. With computer simulation and experiments some information on the structural design concept was obtained as followings: the frame and the shadow mask of the CRT needed designing to increase strength so double-beads shape at the corner of frame was newly designed for it, And the spring which interconnected frame with panel glass was required to deform elastically for the purpose of absorbing the shock energy in the direction of drop. A new type of spring 'twisting spring' was designed to achieve the flexibility in that direction. By using it the deformation energy of a shadow mask could reduced to some degree. To accomplish those simulations commerical codes Pam-Crash and I-DEAS were used and a typical CRT was analyzed as an example to prove the usefulness of this study.
The avoidance of enemy's radar detection is very important issue in the modem electronic weapon system. Researchers have studied to minimize reflected signals of radar. In this research, two types of radar absorbing structure (RAS), 'C'-type shell and 'U'-type shell, were fabricated using fiber-reinforced composite materials and their radar cross section (RCS) were evaluated. The absorption layer was composed of glass fiber reinforced epoxy and nano size carbon-black, and the reflection layer was fabricated with carbon fiber reinforced epoxy. During their manufacturing process, undesired thermal deformation (so called spring-back) was observed. In order to reduce spring-back, the bending angle of mold was controlled by a series of experiments. The spring-back of parts fabricated by using compensated mold was predicted by finite element analysis (ANSYS). The RCS of RAS shells were measured by compact range and predicted by physical optics method. The measured RCS data was well matched with the predicted data.

This paper provides a comprehensive study of optimum design of a helicopter tailrotor driveshaft made of the flexible matrix composites (FMCs). Since the driveshaft transmits power while subjected to large bending deformation due to aerodynamic loadings, the FMCs can be ideal for enhancing the drivetrain performance by absorbing the lateral deformation without shaft segmentation. However, the increased lateral flexibility and high internal damping of the FMCs may induce whirling instability at supercritical operating conditions. Thus, the purpose of optimization in this paper is to find a set of tailored FMC parameters that compromise between the lateral flexibility and the whirling stability while satisfying several criteria such as torsional buckling safety and the maximum shaft temperature at steadystate conditions. At first, the drivetrain was modeled based on the finite element method and the classical laminate theory with complex modulus approach. Then, an objective function was defined as a combination of an allowable bending deformation and external damping and a genetic algorithm was applied to search for an optimum set with respect to ply angles and stack sequences. Results show that an optimum laminate consists of two groups of layers: (i) one has ply angles well below 45$^{\circ}$ and the other far above 45$^{\circ}$ and (ii) the number of layers with low ply angles is much bigger than that with high ply angles. It is also found that a thick FMC shaft is desirable for both lateral flexibility and whirling stability. The genetic algorithm was effective in converging to several local optimums, whose laminates exhibit similar patterns as mentioned above.
Submerged rubble structures include artificial reef and the mound part of the rubble mound breakwater. Artificial reef is a type of the submerged wave absorbing structure installed in a coastal zone to prevent beach erosion and designed to initially reduce the energy of incoming waves so that its run-up height and overtopping quantity can be decreased. In order to ascertain the stability of such submerged rubble structures, minimum weight of the rubble has to be calculated first from the incoming wave height using Hudson's formula or Brebner-Donnelly formula. Based on the calculated minimum weight, a model is built for use in a hydraulic model test carried out to check its stability. The foregoing two formulas used to calculate the minimum weight are empirically derived formulas based on the result of the tests on the rubble mound breakwater and it is, therefore, difficult for us to apply them directly in the calculation of the minimum weight of the submerged structures. Accordingly, this study comes up with a numerical simulation method capable of deformation analysis for rubble structures. This study also tries to identify the deformation mechanism of the submerged rubble structures using the numerical simulation. The method researched through this study will be sufficient for use for usual preparations of the design guidelines for submerged rubble structures.
