  • Iron deficiency affects approximately one-third of the world's population, occurring most frequently in children aged 6 months to 3 years. Mechanisms of iron absorption are similar to those of other divalent metals, particularly manganese, lead, and cadmium, and a diet deficient in iron can lead to excess absorption of manganese, lead, and cadmium. Iron deficiency may lead to cognitive impairments resulting from the deficiency itself or from increased metal concentrations caused by the deficiency. Iron deficiency combined with increased manganese or lead concentrations may further affect neurodevelopment. We recently showed that blood manganese and lead concentrations are elevated among iron-deficient infants. Increased blood manganese and lead levels are likely associated with prolonged breast-feeding, which is also a risk factor for iron deficiency. Thus, babies who are breast-fed for prolonged periods should be given plain, iron-fortified cereals or other good sources of dietary iron.

  • Blood plasma minerals and their effects towards the fertility in 136 cows randomly selected from 26 dairy farms in central Thailand were studied. An average of 8.60 mg% Ca, 5.97 mg% P, 2.45 mg% Mg, $85.9{\mu}g%$ Cu, and $160.9{\mu}g%$ Zn in plasma was observed. Compared to the critical deficient values, 24.3, 10.3, 11.8, 28.7 and 0.0% of the surveyed cows obtained the respective elements in plasma below the standard levels. No significant difference (p >.05) in plasma concentrations of Ca, P, Mg and Zn for the low fertile (conception rate > 3) and fertile (conception rate < 3) cows was found. However, plasma Cu of the low fertile cows (averaged $77.2{\mu}g%$) was lower (p <.01) than that of the fertile ones (averaged $91.12{\mu}g%$). Additionally, it is observed that 47.1% of the cows with the low fertility problem obtained plasma Cu below the 65.0 pg% critical deficient value.

  • Sunflower(Helianthus annuus L.) seedings were de-rooted and grown in nutrient solutions providing either deficient or sufficient boron supply and supplemented with aluminum. Increasing concentrations of aluminum in the nutrient medium caused progressive inhibition of root growth and a parallel increase in proline level of roots. Elevated boron levels improved root growth under toxic aluminum conditions and produced higher proline contents. Exogenous ascorbate improved adventitions root growth in plants supplied with insufficient boron and aluminum. These findings suggest that root growth inhibition resulting from either boron deficiency or aluminum toxicity may be a result of impaired ascorbate metabolism.

  • Subtilisin YaB, produced by alkalophilic Bacillus strain YaB, is an extracellular alkaline serine protease having 55% homology to subtilisin BPN'. It is synthesized as a 378-amino acid preproenzyme and secreted into the culture medium as a 265-amino acid mature protease. To examine the role of pro-sequence for the secretion of subtilisin YaB, we have studied the expression, in Bacillus subtilis, of a mutant preprosubtilisin YaB in which active site Ser214 is substituted with Cys. The use of a six protease-deficient strain, WB600, was required for its efficient production. The prosubtilisin YaB, thus produced, was indeed secreted into the culture medium and was processed to its mature form upon treatment with exogenously added active subtilisin YaB. From these results, we have concluded that the processing of pro-sequence is not essential for the secretion of the enzyme.

  • A diagnosis of iodine-deficient goiter was confirmed in newborn piglets that were born hairless edematous, and with markedly enlarged thyroid gland. Clinically, most of the piglets were born dead, extreme weakness or dying within a few hours of birth. Gestation periods were prolonged for 3-7 days. Histopathologically, hair follicles were scarce and reduced in size, contained slender hairs, and revealed a shallow penetration into the hypodermis that showed severe diffuse edema. Thyroid glands had severely hyperplastic follicles and poorly staining colloid. The follicles were irregular in size and shape depending on varying amounts of lightly eosinophilic and granular colloid in the lumen. The iodine content of the diet fed to the sows and plasma total thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentration of sows were very low. This is a first report for iodine-deficient goiter in newborn piglets in Korea.

  • The RMD(Rehabilitation Medicine Device) with CJM(Compound Joint Motion) is the lower limb unit muscular strengthening promotion rehabilitation medicine device for patients of joint orthopedic operation or the deficient elder of ability to walk, the handicapped. Since the products for the rehabilitation medicine device have limited to the simplicity linear motion, those do not give efficient the lower unit muscular strengthening effects. This device which was under the development gives to exercise of hip joint and knee joint with user's selection at once, get out of the simplicity linear motion. Also it will be contributed to a field of rehabilitation medicine and a mobility aid technology of the deficient elders of ability to walk, the handicapped.

  • The hydrolyzed-lactose milk for the lactase-deficient subject is sweeter than whole milk, and some subjects dislike its taste. To overcome this shortcoming the dried liposomes containing ${\beta}$-galactosidase to digest lactose in milk after drinking were prepared and examined the possible application of this dried liposomes to the lactase-deficient subjects. To improve the stability of conventional liposome suspension, the dried liposomes in the presence of trehalose were prepared by the dehydration-rehydration vesicles method. Small unilamellar vesicles, prepared with egg phosphatidyl cholesterol, and cholesterol, were mixed with ${\beta}$-galactosidase solution and then ;up[jo;ozed. The freeze-dried liposome was rehydrated and centrifuged. The resultant multilamellar vesicles were mixed with trehalose(4g/g lipid) and then lyophilized to produce final dried liposome. Trehalose increased the entrapping efficiency of liposomes by 3 fo1d compared to the liposomes without trehalose (13% vs. 46%).

  • This paper investigates on the use of advanced optical measurement methods, i.e. 3D coordinate measurement machines (3D CMM) and stereo-vision digital image correlation (3D DIC), for the mechanical analysis of shear deficient prestressed concrete members. Firstly, the experimental program is elaborated. Secondly, the working principle, experimental setup and corresponding accuracy and precision of the considered optical measurement techniques are reported. A novel way to apply synthesised strain sensor patterns for DIC is introduced. Thirdly, the experimental results are reported and an analysis is made of the structural behaviour based on the gathered experimental data. Both techniques yielded useful and complete data in comparison to traditional mechanical measurement techniques and allowed for the assessment of the mechanical behaviour of the reported test specimens. The identified structural behaviour presented in this paper can be used to optimize design procedure for shear-critical structural concrete members.
