  • The off-line and on-line partial discharge (PD) in the stator winding of three high-voltage (HV) motors (1,400 HP, 6.6 kV) is measured and analyzed in this paper. The off-line PD is measured at high values between 24,300 ~ 36,100 pC after 18 years of motor operation. Spare replacement motors were not available for testing the degree of deterioration of the stator windings in standstill status. Therefore, on-line periodic analysis was conducted to monitor the trend of PD after installing a ceramic sensor (110 pF, 6.6 kV) in the terminal box for each phase of each motor. In the stator winding of the No.1 and No.2 HV motors, which showed high magnitudes of off-line PD and low magnitudes of on-line PD, defects are expected to appear in the neutral end of the winding. On the contrary, in the stator windings of the No.3 HV motor, which exhibits high off-line and on-line PD magnitude, defects are expected to appear in the terminal end of the winding where a voltage close to the phase voltage is applied.

  • Stator insulation quality assessment for high voltage motors is a major issue for the reliable maintenance of industrial and power plants. To assess the condition of stator insulation, nondestructive tests were performed on the sixty coil groups of twelve motors. After completing the nondestructive tests, the AC voltage applied to the stator winding was gradually increased until insulation failure in order to obtain the breakdown voltage. The stator winding of each motor was classified into five coil groups; one group with healthy insulation and four groups with four different types of artificial defects. To analyze the breakdown voltage statistically, Weibull distribution was employed for the tests on the fifty coil groups of ten motors. The 50th percentile values of the measured breakdown voltages based on the statistical data of the five coil groups of ten motors were 26.1kV, 25.0kV, 24.4kV, 26.7kV and 30.5kV, respectively. Almost all of the failures were located in the line-end coil at the exit of the core slot. The breakdown voltages and the types of defects showed strong relation to the stator insulation tests such as in the case of dissipation factor and ac current. It is shown that the condition of the motor insulation can be determined from the relationship between the probability of failure and the type of defect.

  • Recently the steel parts used at automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before in need of the weight down. To achieve this requirement of a high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion content and surface defect as like decarburization, surface roughness etc.. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to know the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of shot peening of two-stage shot peening and single-stage shot peening. And for this study, three kinds of spring steel(JISG4081-SUP ,SAE 9254, DIN 50CrV4, ) are made. This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from (1) Decreasing the surface roughness (2) Unchanging the surface hardness (3) Increasing the compressive residual stress But, results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of high hardness.

  • FFP(Fitness For Purpose) type defect assessment methodologies based on ECA(Engineering Critical Analysis) have been established and are in use for the structural integrity evaluation of gas pipelines. ECA usually includes the fracture mechanics analysis, and it assumes that J-integral uniquely characterizes crack-tip stress-strain fields. However, it has been shown that it is not sufficient to characterize the crack-tip field under low levels of constraint with a single parameter. Since pipeline structures are made of ductile material, locally loaded in tension, cracks may experience low level of constraint, and therefore, J-dominance will be lost. For this reason, the level of constraint must be quantified to establish a precise assessment procedure for pipeline defects. The objective of this paper is to Investigate the fracture behavior of a crack in gas pipeline by quantifying the level of constraint. For this purpose, tensile tests and CTOD tests were performed at room temperature$(24^{\circ}C)$ and low temperature$(-40^{\circ}C)$ to obtain the material properties. J-Q analyses were performed for SENB and SENT specimens based on 2-D finite element analyses, in order to investigate the in-plane constraint effects on pipeline defects.

  • The software reliability have to be improved as one major method to enhance the quality of developed software, and its defect is detected and modified through testing as a direct way to meet the purpose before releasing. Once its reliability grows up to the target and it is released to public. there may be operational reliability problem. The operational software reliability trend may be different depending on the condition whether it is universal or dedicated. And its reliability estimation is changed based on the condition if it follows uniform testing efforts or Weibull testing efforts. I study the operational reliability trend of dedicated software, applying two case testing efforts for the released item.

  • The tubby protein (Tub), a putative transcription factor, plays important roles in the maintenance and function of neuronal cells. A splicing defect-causing mutation in the 3'-end of the tubby gene, which is predicted to disrupt the carboxy-terminal region of the Tub protein, causes maturity-onset obesity, blindness, and deafness in mice. Although this pathological Tub mutation leads to a loss of function, the precise mechanism has not yet been investigated. Here, we found that the mutant Tub proteins were mostly localized to puncta found in the perinuclear region and that the C-terminus was important for its solubility. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed that puncta of mutant Tub co-localized with the aggresome. Moreover, whereas wild-type Tub was translocated to the nucleus by extracellular signaling, the mutant forms failed to undergo such translocation. Taken together, our results suggest that the malfunctions of the Tub mutant are caused by its misfolding and subsequent localization to aggresomes.

  • This paper showed mechanical properties and behaviors of macrostructures for specimens welded by F.S.W according to welding conditions and tool with 6.35$mm_t$ aluminum 7075-T651alloy plate. It resulted in defect-free weld zone in case tool rotation speed was 800rpm, 1250rpm and 1600rpm respectively that transition speed was changed to 15mm/min, 61mm/min and 124mm/min with tool's pin diameter 4${\Phi}$mm and 6${\Phi}$mm. The optimum mechanical property, ultimate stress,${\sigma}_Y$=470Mpa was obtained at the condition of 124mm/min of travel speed with 800rpm of tool rotation speed using full screw type pin, shoulder dia. 20${\Phi}$mm, pin dia.6${\Phi}$mm and pin length 6mm. The full-screw type and the half-screw type pin showed the similar behaviors of weldability. It is found that the size of nugget was depended on tool transition speed and tool dimension by macrostructures of the cross section of weld zone.
