  • ZnO is a promising material to make high efficient ultraviolet(UV) or blue light emitting diodes(LEDs) because of its large binding energy and energy bandgap. In this study, we prepared ZnO thin films with p-type conductivity on silicon(100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering in the mixture of $N_2$ and $O_2$. The process was accompanied by low pressure in-situ annealing in $O_2$ at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ respectively. Hall effect in Van der Pauw configuration showed that the N-doped ZnO film annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ has p-type conductivity. Photoluminescence(PL) spectrum of the film annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ showed UV emission related to exciton and bound to donor-acceptor pair(DAP) as well as visible emission related to many intrinsic defects.

  • Semiconductor manufacturing industry is a high density integration industry because it generates a vest number of data that takes about 300~400 processes that is supervised by numerous production parameters. It is asked of engineers to understand the correlation between different stages of the manufacturing process which is crucial in reducing production costs. With complex manufacturing processes, and defect processing time being the main cause. In the past, it was possible to grasp the corelation among manufacturing process stages through the engineer's domain knowledge. However, It is impossible to understand the corelation among manufacturing processes nowadays due to high density integration in current semiconductor manufacturing. in this paper we propose a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) using both wafer test voltage variables and fail bit counts variables. using the method we suggested, we can increase the semiconductor yield which is the result of the package test.

  • This paper presents the approach involving fault detection and diagnosis of gears using pattern recognition and Wavelet transform. It describes result of the comparison between KDI (Kullback Discrimination Information) with the nearest neighbor classification rule as one of pattern recognition methods and Wavelet transform to know a way to detect and diagnosis of gear damages experimentally. To model the damages 1) Normal (no defect), 2) one tooth is worn out, 3) All teeth faces are worn out 4) One tooth is broken. The vibration sensor was attached on the bearing housing. This produced the total time history data that is 20 pieces of each condition. We chose the standard data and measure distance between standard and tested data. In Wavelet transform analysis method, the time series data of magnitude in specified frequency (rotary and mesh frequency) were earned. As a result, the monitoring system using Wavelet transform method and KDI with nearest neighbor classification rule successfully detected and classified the damages from the experimental data.

  • Applications of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for retrofitting, strengthening and repairing concrete structures have been expanded dramatically in the last decade. FRPs have high specific strength and stiffness compared to conventional construction materials, e.g., steel. Ease of preparation and installation, resistance to corrosion, versatile fabrication and adjustable mechanical properties are other advantages of the FRPs. However, there are major concerns about long-term performance, serviceability and durability of FRP applications in concrete structures. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures need to be implemented. This paper presents a study on investigating the application of Rayleigh wave for detecting debonding defect in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures. A time-of-flight (ToF) method is proposed to determine the location of a debonding between the FRP and concrete using Rayleigh wave. A series of numerical case studies are carried out to demonstrate the capability of the proposed debonding detection method. In the numerical case studies, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed to simulate the Rayleigh wave propagation and scattering at the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure. Absorbing layers are employed in the 3D FE model to reduce computational cost in simulating the practical size of the FRP-retrofitted structure. Different debonding sizes and locations are considered in the case studies. The results show that the proposed ToF method is able to accurately determine the location of the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure.

  • Remaining lifetime prediction of the underground gas pipeline plays a key role in maintenance planning and public safety. One of main causes in the pipeline failure is metal corrosion. This paper deals with estimating the pipeline reliability in the presence of corrosion defects. Because a pipeline has uncertainty and variability in its operation, probabilistic approximation approaches such as first order second moment (FOSM), first order reliability method (FORM), second order reliability method (SORM), and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) are widely employed for pipeline reliability predictions. This paper presents a fuzzy inference based reliability method (FIRM). Compared with existing methods, a distinction of our method is to incorporate a fuzzy inference into quantifying degrees of variability in corrosion defects. As metal corrosion depends on the service environment, this feature makes it easier to obtain practical predictions. Numerical experiments are conducted by using a field dataset. The result indicates that the proposed method works well and, in particular, it provides more advisory estimations of the remaining lifetime of the gas pipeline.

  • Conventional bent plate used in mandibular reconstruction surgery needs safety verification since its mechanical properties are changed due to the plastic deformation during the bending process. In this study we investigate stability of the plastically deformed plate and the plate with the same shape without plastic deformation through the finite element analysis(FEA). First we simulate the process of plate bending to fit the defect in patient. Then, the other plate is modelled to represent a customized plate with the same shape of the plastically deformed one, but without any residual stresses from plastic deformation. After binding these plates to the mandible, we conduct the masticatory simulation. Finally, we compare the resulting Von Mises stress of the customized plate and of the bent plate. The bent plate shows much higher stress than the customized one due to the residual stresses form the bending process. The study shows that plastic deformation in the plate may decrease the safety of the reconstruction surgery.

  • This paper briefly describes the new engineering method, called the enhanced reference stress method, to estimate J (or $C^*$) for non-linear fracture mechanics analysis of defective components, recently proposed by authors. The proposed method offers significant advantages over existing methods in terms of its accuracy, simplicity and robustness. Examples of application of the proposed method to typical piping integrity problems such as through-wall cracked pipes under combined loading, and surface cracked pipes under internal pressure and bending are given. Excellent agreements between the FE J and $C^*$ results and those of the proposed method provide sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method. One notable point is that the proposed method can be used to estimate J (or $C^*$) along the crack front of surface cracks. Moreover simplicity of the proposed method makes it easy to extend to more complex problems. Thus the proposed method is attractive to assess the significance of defects under practical situations.

  • Gas porosity which is a common defect in aluminum alloy casting, is also thought to be severer in aluminum alloy castings produced by lost foam process due to the pyrolysis of the polystyrene foam pattern during pouring. Fundamental experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of process variables such as the melt treatment, the cooling rate and pouring temperature on the density and mechanical properties in A356.2 castings with simple bar shape. The density of grain refined specimen was slightly lower than that of degassed one, but was higher than that of no treated one and that of shot ball packed specimen was higher than the other specimens. The tensile strength and elongation were in the ranges of $200{\sim}230MPa$ and $0.5{\sim}1.5%$ respectively. The density and hardness of lost foam cast specimens decreased with increase in pouring temperature.
