  • In this study, a noncontact laser ultrasonic system is proposed for rail defect detection. An Nd-Yag pulse laser is used for generation of ultrasonic waves, and the corresponding ultrasonic responses are measured by a laser Doppler vibrometer. For the detection of rail surface damages, the shape of the excitation laser beam is transformed into a line. On the other hand, a point source laser beam is used for the inspection of defects inside a rail head. Then, the interactions of propagating ultrasonic waves with defects are examined using actual rail specimens. Amplitude attenuation was mainly observed for a surface crack, and reflections were most noticeable from an internal damage. Finally, opportunities and challenges associated with real-time rail inspection from a high-speed train are discussed.

  • Cellulose is a beneficial material that has low cost, lightweight, high compatibility and biodegradability. Recently electroactive paper (EAPap) on cellulose base was discovered as a smart material and actuator through ion migration and piezoelectric effect. Furthermore cellulose has a potentiality to apply the display material, because of its high reflectivity, flexibility and high transmittance. The various shapes and height patterns of the Cellulose acetate (CA) solution, such as circle and honeycomb patterns, were fabricated and observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM, S4300 Hitachi). The resulting pattern showed uniform size in the large area without defect. After stretching the CA film with saponification process in the sodium methoxide in methanol solution, Most of the compositions become one directional ordered nanofibers below 50nm.

  • This study deals with the sound insulation performance of the damping sheet, which is widely used in a train. The wall of train is assumed to be a plate made of steel and two damping sheets. In case of damping sheet only, the sound transmission loss follows the mass law. If a steel plate is attached to damping sheet, the transmission loss is found to be higher than single of only steel plate, as we can anticipated, about $3{\sim}5$ dB. This is very well known consequence that is because the density of area increases. However, the increase of the transmission loss is not higher than what we can expect by the mass law. That's because the steel is perfectly blocked from the transmission of the air ; There is no defect in that material.

  • A Color Discerning Device(CDD) is the equipment to use in a Rice Processing Complex(RPC). A CDD can sorting discolored grain according to light and shade. The existing a CDD's driving performance is not so good as overseas machine. Besides, transportation process causes a defect in the mechanism from impact or harmonic excitation or etc. This study is represented the problem of CDD through experiment and simulation on a CDD. To analysis the problem of driving condition, devide each part of CDD for performed modal analysis. The problem of driving of driving condition and transportation process solved by carry out modal analysis and static analysis.

  • Multistage screening is a common practice when a component has a critical effect on the function of the assembly. A defect in a component might incur malfunction of an electronic device, resulting in a great amount of loss. Multistage screening, including duplicated screening inspections, may provide a good solution for this problem when inspection errors are present. In the company studied here, the manufacturing process of the multiple layer chip capacitor includes two-stage screening. In the first stage, screening inspection is performed repeatedly until no defects are found in the lot. In the second stage, sampling inspection is performed by a group of experts prior to shipment. In this article, we review the procedure used in the field and suggest a revised model of the multiple screening procedure and solution method for this situation. The usefulness of the proposed model is discussed through a practical example.

  • This study deals with the prediction of defect location which can be occurred in structure. The existing methods was very difficult to be applied to predict it, because of complex numerical formula. The triangulation method proposed in this study can predict the source location easily with small amount of data. The arrival time of wave can be directly converted into the distance between sensors. For this purpose, the propagation velocity was measured by Rayleigh wave, and the propagation behavior was analyzed. The welded workpiece is adapted to investigate for the consideration of jointed part in structure, The propagation velocity of signal was measured in welded workpiece and the revised algorithm of source location was proposed.

  • Light scattering measurement system that can evaluate light scattering characteristic from defects on silicon wafer surface has been developed. The system uses $Ar^+$ laser as an illumination source, and a highly sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) for detecting scattered light from defects. Unlike with conventional measurement system, our system has ability to measure scattered light pattern from wide range of scattering angles with changeable incidence condition. It is shown that our developed system is effective to discriminate the types and sizes of defects from basic experimental results using a microscatch and a PSL sphere.

  • Despite the increasing need of nanometer-scale accuracy in abrasive machining using ultrasmall particles such as abrasive jet and chemical mechanical polishing(CMP), the process mechanism is still unknown. Based on the background, research on the effects of various process parameters on the machined surface at abrasive machining was motivated and performed by using finite element analysis where the effect of slurry fluid flow involved. The effect of particle shape on the machined surface during particle-surface collision was discussed in this paper. The results from FEA simulation revealed that any damage or defect generation on machined surface by the impact may occur only if the particle has enough impact energy. Therefore, it could be concluded that generation of the defects and damage on the wafer surface after CMP process was mainly due to direct contact of the 3 bodies, i.e., pad-particle-wafer.

  • The structures and mechanical properties of friction stirred welds of oxygen free copper(OFC) sheet were investigated. Defect-free welds were obtained in a relatively wide range of the welding conditions from 1000 to 2000 rpm, and welding speed from 500 to 2000 mm/min. The microstructure of the stirred zone(SZ) showed recrystallized grains, and the gram size varied largely with the welding conditions. The SZ hardness values including those of all the optimum welding conditions were slightly lower than that of the base metal, and increased with decreasing heat input. The tensile strength of the all-SZ increased with increasing the hardness values. The Hall-Fetch relationship was confirmed between the yield strength of the all-52 and the recrystallized grain size of the SZ.
