HYDROGEN DECREPITATION AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}-TYPE$ ALLOY MODIFIED WITH A SMALL ADDITION OF Nb

  • The hydrogen decrepitation behaviour of the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} alloy containing 4at%Nb was examined by means of DTA and SEM metallography, and the magnetic properties of the alloy were studied by means of VSM or TMA. It has been found that a simple hydrogenation and degassing treatment for the alloy caused a poor hydrogen decrepitation. The cycle treatment consisting of repeated hydrogenation and degassing, however, caused a severe hydrogen decrepitation with a combination of intergranular and transgranular failure. The disproportionation temperature of the hydrogenated $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}-type alloy was enhanced significantly by small addition of Nb. It has also been found that the Curie temperature of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} matrix phase in the Nb-containing alloy has been enhanced by the hydrogenation, and this was attributed to the increase in interatomic distance between the neighbouring iron atoms caused by the interstitial occupancy of the hydrogen atom into the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}-type lattice. The magnetisation of the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} alloy containing Nbwas found to be lower than that of the Nb-free alloy, and this was explained by the dilution effect due to the presence of the paramagnetic $Sm_{2}Fe_{17} phase.

Study on the Effects of Hydrogen Decrepitation on the Formation of Sm2Fe17Nx-type Material

  • In an attempt to find an effective production way of the$ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}type material, the Sm_2Fe_{17-}$type alloy with chemical composition of Sm 22.7 wt.%, Fe72.3 wt.% Nb 5.0wt.% was subjected to a HD (hydrogen decrepitation) treatment prior to a nitrogenation, and its effect on the formation of the nitride material was investigated. The nitrogenation behaviours of the alloy were investigated using a TPA(thermopiezic analysis), TMA, and DTA under nitrogen gas, and XRD. It has been found that the previous HD treatment significantly facilitated the formation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}$type nitride, and this was accounted for by the clean surface and the finer particle size of the powder caused by the HD treatment. It has also been found that the hydrogen atoms existing in the initial HD-treated alloy were removed almost completely during the nitrogenation. The heat output associated with the nitrogenation of the previously HD-treated alloy was found to be significantly smaller than that of the as-cast alloy.

Improving Reproducibility of Coercivity of HDDR-treated Nd-Fe-B-type Material by Controlling Hydrogen Decrepitation (수소파쇄 제어를 통한 HDDR 처리한 Nd-Fe-B계 재료의 보자력 재현성 향상)

  • Practical difficulty in the HDDR (hydrogenation - disproportionation - desorption - recombination) processing of Nd-Fe-B-type alloy is a poor reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated material. In an attempt to improve the reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy, the hydrogen decrepitation was carefully controlled so as to induce more extensive micro-cracks in the particle. Prior to the hydrogenation and disproportionation reaction of HDDR processing, an additional hydrogen degassing was carried out at an elevated temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum for the previously hydrogen decrepitated particle. During the additional hydrogen degassing the lattice of hydrogen absorbed $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase was further shrunken, hence more microcracks were introduced in the particle due to its brittle nature. Particles with more micro-cracks had more homogeneous hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction during the HDDR-treatment. The improved reproducibility of coercivity of the HDDR-treated material was attributed to the improved homogeneity of the HDDR reactions due to the presence of more micro-cracks.

Applied-mineralogical Characterization for the Quick-lime Manufactured from Fine-grained Domestic Limestones (국내산 세립질 석회석으로부터 제조된 생석회에 대한 응용광물학적 특성 평가)

  • This study is aimed to emphasize the significance of ore selection in lime manufacturing through the evaluation of applied-mineralogical impact factors of crude ores controlling calcination characteristics for some domestic limestones used currently for lime manufacturing. To do this work, systematic characterization and determination were carried out for the limestone ores and their calcination products in a fixed calcining condition (target temperature: $1000^{\circ}C$, retention time: 30 minutes, 2, 4, 10, 16 hours), and the results were correlated and discussed. Selected high-Ca limestones in this study are as much as > 98 wt%, but they are somewhat diverse in crystallinity, texture, and impurity composition. Synthesized quicklimes are varied depending on such a difference in ore characters. The Pungchon limestone has relatively very low calcination rate, and the limestones from the Gabsan formation and the Jeongseon formation exhibit good quality in calcination rate and decrepitation. Among these samples, the limestone ore from the Jeongseon formation is evaluated to be the best for crude ore in manufacturing of highly-reactive quicklime. In addition, it is characteristic that the Gabsan limestone comparative rich in Fe-bearing mineral such as pyrite and goethite is more conspicuous in sintering effect.

Improvement of the Magnetic Properties of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B Sintered Magnets by Modification of HD and Annealing Processes (HD 처리 및 열처리공정 개선에 의한 (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B 소결자석의 자기특성 향상)

  • In an attempt to optimize the magnetic properties of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets, hydrogenation and post-sintering heat treatment processes were investigated at various hydrogenation temperatures and heat treatment temperatures. The coercivity of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets hydrogenated at $400^{\circ}C$ increased to about 1.2 kOe without any detrimental effect on the remanence. Moreover, the coercivity of the magnets was enhanced further by a consecutive $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ step heat treatment. These results eventually leaded to the reduction of the Dy content in a high coercive (> 30 kOe) (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets, as much as 10%.

Quality Evaluation of the High-purity Limestones for Lime Manufacturing Based on the Measurements of Shape Factor and Grain Boundary Frequency (형상계수 및 경계빈도수 측정에 의거한 생석회 제조용 고품위석회석의 품질 평가)

  • Crystallinity and textural relations, which are crucial in terms of the quality concept of high-purity limestone, have not been effectively applicable to the limestone evaluation as crude ore due to the difficulties in precise measurements. To overcome the above, as a new method of ore characterization, a measurement of shape factor and grain boundary frequency utilizing the image analysing system was adopted in this study. Some domestic limestones used for lime manufacturing were investigated by such a quality evaluation method, and its results are discussed and correlated each other samples. As the result, even though calcite contents of crude ore, i.e., limestone grade and its crystal size are similar, quality of manufactured lime is remarkably different depending on the degree of shape factor and grain boundary frequency. In other words, as the more irregular in crystal shape and the higher the grain boundary frequency, the manufactured quick lime became more superior in all terms of lime quality such as rate of calcination, porosity, reactivity, sintering and decrepitation effect. However, because the quick lime become easily overheated in case of relatively higher degree in shape factor and grain boundary effect, a technology minimizing heating time is necessary for the manufacturing of high quality lime. In limestone industry, such a ore characterization method will be much more reasonable than the conventional method by measurement of mean size, because the method may collectively comprise crystal shape and other textural factors which can not be numerically evaluated in the past.
