  • Punching shear in concrete slabs is a serious problem in certain structural systems, such as flat slab. In this study, mechanical improvement between specimens which are unstrengthened and strengthened with steel plate and fiber panel is experimentally investigated. The strengthened bridge deck specimens had increment of strength and broke down with punching shear failure. Strengthening ratio should be considered to restraint punching failure.

  • Modern ultra-large container carriers can be exposed to the unprecedented springing excitation from ocean waves due to their relatively low torsional rigidity. Large deck opening on the deck of container carriers tends to cause warping distortion of hull structure under wave-induced excitation, eventually leading to the higher chance of resonance vibration between its torsional response and incoming waves. To handle this problem, a higher-order B-spline Rankine panel method and Vlasov-beam FE model was directly coupled in the time domain, and the coupled equation was solved by using an implicit iterative method. In order to capture the complicated behavior of thin-walled open section girder, a sophisticated beam-based finite element model was developed, which takes into account warping distortion and shear-on-wall effect. Then, the developed beam model was directly coupled with the time-domain Rankine panel method for hydrodynamic problem by using the fixed-point iteration method. The developed computational scheme was validated through the comparison with the frequency-domain solution on the container carrier model in linear springing regime.

  • One of the major differences of Korean residential building compared with other countries is a rigid diaphragm of a floor due to the panel heating system. An increment of a gravity floor load might cause vibration problem when the composite floor system is introduced to the panel heating system. Since the noise criteria of a residential building is lower than that of an office building, the development of a noise absorbing system should be preceded. The response evaluation was performed for the finished floor, that is with panel heating and noise absorbing system. The natural frequency was obtained both from an experimental study and an analytical study. An appropriate vibration condition of a floor with panel heating and noise absorbing systems was evaluated from this study.

  • Micro-cracks with a width less than 0.1 mm in precast concrete panels do not cause structural problem, but they can cause problems in long term durability and concrete surfaces aesthetic, requiring additional repair costs. In this paper, polymer cement concrete is used to increase flexural tensile strength and to prevent micro-cracks due to construction loads on LB-DECK panels. Using 5% polymer-cement ratio, the panel crack moment is increased by improving flexural tensile strength and controlling visible micro-cracks during construction stage of LB-DECK.

  • Full-depth precast concrete deck bridge has shear pockets for shear connectors that give composite action with steel girder. Strength and shear stiffness of shear connection that is needed to design shear connectors in case that shear pockets are filled with nonshrink mortar are investigated. In case that simple span full-depth precast concrete deck bridge is designed by allowable stress design, distribution of shear connector is suggested and details of precast panel that is placed on the support are proposed. Appropriate distribution of shear connectors in strength design and fatigue design is investigated through parameter analyses using partial interaction theory. The effects of nonshrink mortar strength is studied using the results of experiments and analyses and adequate strength is proposed.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. In this paper, three types of the detail for joints was selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack contral was investigated through static tests on composite beams. Form the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of half-depth precast deck was observed and especially an overlapping length of loop joint and transverse reinforcement were checked. The results suggest that increasing the loop overlapping length increases the flexural strength of half-depth precast deck with loop joints. In terms of crack contral, the loop joint with transverse reinforcement showed better performance.

  • FRP-concrete composite deck, an innovative system, is composed of concrete in the top and FRP panel in the bottom. Bottom FRP panel can reduce self weight and improve workability. This system requires strong connection between FRP and concrete. Therefore coarse sand coating was previously applied on FRP to improve the bonding. In this study, concrete wedge method is newly introduced to enhance both vertical bond and fatigue performance. Three FRP-concrete composite deck specimens with the concrete wedges were manufactured, and static and fatigue tests were carried out. The results showed that the new FRP-concrete composite deck satisfied deflection and crack width limits set by the design codes. And the fatigue test showed that the composite deck was capable of two million load cycles under 50% of its static strength. Based on the results, it can be concluded that that this new system has outstanding mechanical and durability performance, and therefore, satisfactorily be used in designing FRP-concrete composite deck.

  • In this study, based on a I-roll embedded steel composite deck, it is suggested a new type of simplified composite deck and analyzed under construction loading. Using ABAQUS, it's estimated effects of welding amount of steel plate and I-section, existence of a hole of I-section's flange, and a location of hole. For a reasonable verification of modeling, compare Euler-Beam theory with F.E.M models. In result, it is verified that change of welding amount increase more maximum bending tension stresses at the central part's section of span when elements are partial-welded. Also, verify that deflection is slightly increased when a hole existed compared with no hole.

  • Existing construction materials such as concrete and steel have chronic problems; deterioration and corrosion. Owing to its special features of light weight ‘ high durability, anti-corrosion, composite material used in civil infrastructure can not only solve fundamental problems of deterioration and corrosion, but also reduce both construction and maintenance cost significantly. After the fabrication of deck panel with snap-fit connection by pultrusion through composite design according to stacking sequence of composite laminates and structural analysis, performance of decks will be verified and evaluated by structural tests.
