Maintaining adequate residual chlorine concentration is an important criteria to provide secure drinking water. The chlorine decay can be influenced by unstable flow due to the transient event caused by operation of hydraulic devices in the pipeline system. In order to understand the relationship between the transient event and the chlorine decay, the probability density function based on the water demand curve of a hypothetical water distribution system was used. The irregular transient events and the same number of events with regular interval were assumed and the fate of chlorine decay was compared. The chlorine decay was modeled using a generic chlorine decay model with optimized parameters to minimize the root mean square error between the experimental chlorine concentration and the simulated chlorine concentration using genetic algorithm. As a result, the chlorine decay can be determined through the number of transients regardless of the occurrence intervals.
Because insect visitors was different depending on decomposition stage, dipterans occurred on chicken carcasses depending on postmortem intervals were compared by abandoned sites and decomposition from a serial study on arthropod occurrence from carcasses as forensic indicator. Species occurrence and decomposition of carcasses were different depending on abandoned sites (forest hill, open field, stream, greenhouse and roof), seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter), and situation (burying and non-burying). Development of carcass decomposition was faster at all sites in summer, carcass in greenhouse in winter, and unburied carcasses. Although visiting time of blow flies (Calliphoridae) (Phaenicia sericata, Lucilia illustris, Lucilia sp., Chrysomyia pinguis, and Chrysomyia megacephala) was different depending on abandoned season, their adults were generally collected from carcasses within 2 days. However, there were no visited flies at fresh stage of buried carcasses. The flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) were collected from all sites and seasons, and much faster from unburied carcasses than buried carcasses. Those were collected earlier from carcasses in greenhouse than other sites and occurrence was also shorter. In greenhouse, occurrence time of flesh flies were different depending on season; spring and summer - from fresh to active decay stage, fall - fresh to active decay stage, and winter - advanced decay to remains stage. Calliphora lata, Tricerotopyga calliphoroides, and Aldrichana grahami were dominant species and occurrences were different from other flies. These flies were active mainly from fresh to active stage. Larvae of sarcophagid flies were occurred earlier than those of calliphorid flies on buried carcasses.
The occurrence of grape berry shattering and decay is influenced by the pre- and/or postharvest infection of decay organisms and pest. Postharvest infection is associated with physical damage due to rough handling. To control quality loss during storage of table grapes, the effects of slow releasing $SO^2$ pad on storability of 'Rosario Bianco' (Vitis vinifera) and 'Campbell Early' (Vitis labruscana) grapes were examined, respectively. The $SO^2$ concentration in package of tables grapes reached to at about 40 $ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$ after 40 days of treatment and remained more than 80 days above 15 $ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Decay was found in untreated 'Rosario Bianco' and 'Campbell Early' grapes at each for 44 and 85 days after storage, but not in $SO^2$ pad treated grapes. The storage potential of grape berries at $0^{\circ}C$ increased 2~3 times depending on cultivar by $SO^2$ pad treatment. The application of $SO^2$ pad is confirmed to be effective on the increase of market potential with minimizing quality loss such as berry shattering and decay.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature during transportation and continuing shelf-life on fruit quality and the occurrence of physiological disorder to set up the appropriate exportation temperature condition in Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) 'Hanareum'. In the experiment of simulated exportation headed for USA, the fruits transported at $1^{\circ}C$ showed less weight loss than those of $5^{\circ}C$. Market temperature appeared as a key factor for keeping freshness of exported pear fruits rather than transportation temperature. Quality factors such as high flesh firmness and low incidence of fruit rot and physiological disorders including core breakdown and pithiness were attained at the fruits maintained at $18^{\circ}C$. Approximately two times higher incidence of physiological disorders and of fruit decay rates were observed in the fruits distributed at $25^{\circ}C$ than the those of $18^{\circ}C$. Therefore, temperature management during marketing resulted as an important factor for maintaining fruits quality in the process of pear fruit exportation.
The number of patients with cardiovascular diseases who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are increasing among young adults as well as the aged population. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is vital in improving survival rates of OHCA victims. Survival rates of OHCA were shown to decline exponentially in time to defibrillation, yet studies in Korea are uncommon that captures the properties of their survival rates in examining optimal locations of AEDs. In this study, we worked on the maximal gradual coverage location problem (MGCLP) with exponential decay coverage function to decide on their optimal locations. The exponential decay coverage function mitigates the drawback of over-estimating survival rates of OHCA patients. It is expected that a more sophisticated facility location problem will be developed to identify the "emergent" characteristics of pedestrians who responds to the OHCA occurrence by incorporating random pedestrian locations and movement through simulation.
The occurrence of post-harvest diseases and their pathogens in 'Campbell Early' which is the most produced grape in Korea was investigated. The 'Campbell Early' grapes produced in 3 main grape-producing areas were stored in a cold room ($0-4^{\circ}C$) for 2 weeks then at room temperature for 4 weeks prior to investigation. The major post-harvest diseases occurred were gray mold, blue mold, ripe rot, new decay 1, and new decay 2. Pathogens isolated from the symptoms were identified as Botrytis cinerea for gray mold, Penicillium sclerotiorum for blue mold and Collectrichum acutatum for ripe rot. Pathogens for new decay 1 and new decay 2 were not identified yet. Incidences of new decay 1 and new decay 2 were much higher than the other 3 decays in all grapes produced from 3 areas. Gray mold and blue mold occurred at much lower frequencies than these two decays, and ripe rot occurred least.
This study focused on the improvement of blueberry delivery service using pre-cooled ice and $SO_2$ pads to prevent an increase in the fruit temperature as well as decay. To maintain the fruit quality during low temperature storage, the effect of a $SO_2$ pad and modified atmosphere packaging was also examined. Harvested blueberries were precooled at $15^{\circ}C$, sorted, and packaged. And the fruits were placed in a similar environment as that for the parcel service. Part of the fruits were stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for long term storage. The air temperature in the delivery box increased along with an increase in the simulated delivery time regardless of the treatment. However, the rate of temperature increase was lower in the ice pad treatment. No significant difference was not found after 48 h. The oxygen concentration in the box ranged between 10.5 - 14.5% in the ice pad treatment, which was higher than that of the untreated control (7.5 - 11.9%) whereas the $CO_2$ concentration was lower in the ice pad treatment. No differences were found in the occurrence of off-flavor, decay, and sensory quality loss during the 48 hours of the parcel service simulation. The combined treatment of the $SO_2$ pad and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) using a perforated film increased the shelf-life of the blueberry fruits, the overall quality such as firmness, and the soluble solid content was not different between the treatments except for the decay incidence. No decayed fruit was found in the combined treatment. However, the percentage of decayed fruit in the control was 25% on day 15 of storage and 75% on day 33 of storage, respectively.

The effects of developed grape bags on the micro-climate changes of bag, physiological disorder, pathogenic decay, quality and harvest time evaluation in 'Campbell Early' grapevines were studied. The temperature and light transmittance of developed grape bags showed no differences compared with the onces of conventional bag and non-bagging, but relative humidity and the amount of water evaporation were changed in all treatments. The occurrence of unfertilized fruit, poorly colored fruit, russet and gray mold rot showed no significant difference in all treatment at harvest time. Developed grape bags decreased effectively the occurrence of cracking fruit and bitter rot in 'Campbell Early' fruit. There was no difference in growth of cluster and berry, soluble solids and total acidity in fruits, degree of skin color and bloom appearance at harvest time. The skin color and fruit boom and harvest time evaluation in developed grape bags were resulted excellent compared with the once of conventional bag and non bagging.
Seed decay of soybean caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum, Colletotrichum truncatum and Cercospora kikuchii is a serious disease when soybean is harvested under warm and wet weather conditions. Benomyl has been used for controlling the disease, however, benomyl application may be limited due to common occurrence of resistance. The efficacy of 21 fungicides against the pathogens was evaluated in vitro. Among the fungicides tested, benomyl, carbendazim, fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, thiophanate-methyl, and triflumizole were found effective and were evaluated for their ability to control the seed pathogens. Fluazinam completely inhibited mycelial growth at a concentration of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for D. phaseolorum; and at a concentration of 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for C. truncatum and C. kikuchii. $EC_90$ values of fluazinam were similar to that of benomyl. Because fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, and triflumizole were found effective against the seed pathogens, these were subjected for field-testing. Suppression of pod and seed infection by fluazinam and iprodione+propineb was as high as that of benomyl without any reduction in agronomic characters of soybean. This study shows that fluazinam and iprodione+propineb may be used in combination with benomyl to control seed pathogens, manage resistance, and ensure production of high quality soybean seeds.

This study is to observe the occurrence of heterotrophic bacteria in terms of free chlorine residuals in two different water distribution system which belongs to both K and Y water treatment plant of S city of Korea. The data analyzing in distribution systems (DS) shows that the free chlorine residuals decrease from 0.10 to 0.56 mgmg/L for K, and 0.51 to 0.78 mg/L for Y. The decay of free chlorine is clearly higher in both March and August than those of in January. The HPC in DS are ranged from 0 to 40 CFU/mL for K, 0 to 270 CFU/mL for Y, on R2A medium. In particular, its level is relatively high at consumers ground storage tanks, taps and point-of-end area of Y. The predominant genera is studied in distribution systems are Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas (branch of Pseudomonas), Micrococcus, Bacillus, Staphylococcus. The diversity of heterotrophic bacteria increase in the end-point area. Most of them are either encapsulated cells or cocci of gram-positve. In conclusion, the point-of-end area in distribution systems shows the longer flow distance from water treatment plants, the greater diversity and higher level of heterotrophic bacteria due to the significant decay of free chlorine residuals.
