There are human casualties that caused by slope-stability related disasters such as landslide and debris flow during typhoon and rainy season every year in Korea. These disaster sites can be analyzed systematically using digital topographic data and aerial photogrammetry. In this study, geographical factors such as slope degree, geology, height, and soil depth are analyzed in four landslide-disaster sites from Muju, Jinan, and Jangsu County based on digital elevation maps generated by ArcGIS. Each site showed different characteristics in geology and geography and it is found that GIS can be utilized for the visualization of steep-slope failure areas.
Rockey slopes adjacent to railways are disclosed from severe weathering and hazard of failure of themselves. Consequently it causes directly rockfall or landsliding on the railway. Conventional solutions-rigid system like rocksheds, shotcrete, retaining walls, etc to these causes are limited to protect train, rail, our properties and lives from the harmful attack - rockfall. debris flow and sliding. Flexible concept for solutions with passive and active type method based on Euro Code 7 capable of high energy absorption and light materials are rapidly replacing the rigid systems with natural friendly, early installation, cost and time saving and reducing danger in works all over the world.

AFDA (Approximate Full Distribution Approach) model of FORM (First-Order Reliability Model) which can quantitatively calculate the probability that storm sewer reach to performance limit state was developed in this study. It was defined as a failure if amount of inflow exceed the capacity of storm sewer. Manning's equation and rational equation were used to determine the capacity and inflow of reliability function. Furthermore, statistical characteristics and distribution for the random variables were analyzed as a reliability analysis. It was found that the statistical distribution for annual maximum rainfall intensity of 10 cities in Korea is matched well with Gumbel distribution. Reliability model developed in this study was applied to Y shaped storm sewer system to calculate the probability that storm sewer may exceed the performance limit state. Probability of failure according to diameter was calculated using Manning's equation. Especially, probability of failure of storm sewer in Mungyeong and Daejeon was calculated using rainfall intensity of 50-year return period. It was found that probability of failure can be significantly increased if diameter is decreased below the original diameter. Therefore, cleaning the debris in sewer pipes to maintain the original pipe diameter should be one of the best ways to reduce the probability of failure of storm sewer. In sewer system, two sewer pipes can flow into one sewer pipe. For this case, probability of system failure was calculated using multiple failure mode. Reliability model developed in this study can be applied to design, maintenance, management, and control of storm sewer system.
We carried out a geological survey to classify the types of mass movement in Danyang Geopark (where various rock types are distributed) and analyzed the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of landslide materials using a series of laboratory tests. Debris flows occurred in areas of limestone/marble, shale, and porphyroblastic gneiss, and limestone/marble landslides were distinguished from the others through the presence of karren topography. Soil tests showed that soil derived from weathered gneiss, which has a higher proportion of coarse grains, has a higher friction angle, lower cohesion, and larger hydraulic conductivity than soils from areas of limestone/marble, and shale. Rock failure mass movements occurred in areas of phyllite, sandstone, and conglomerate and were subdivided into plane failure, block-fall, and boulder-fall types in areas of phyllite, sandstone, and conglomerate, respectively. The shear strength of phyllite is much lower than that of the other types of rock, which have similar rock quality. The slake durability index of the conglomerate is similar to that of the other rock types, which have similar degrees of weathering, but differential weathering of the matrix and clasts was clearly observed when comparing the samples before and after the test. This study can help establish appropriate reinforcement and disaster prevention measures, which depend on the type of mass movement expected given the geological characteristics of an area.
In the study, we carried out a 3-D analysis to assess the influence of groundwater level changes on the slope stability, conducting a series of back-numerical analysis to delineate the critical line of the shear strength of the failure surface of a landslide, and a laboratory test to determine the geo-mechanical properties of soil samples. The analysis result shows that the shear strength determined by the laboratory test was distributed below the critical line of shear strength estimated by back-analysis. Differences between driving and resisting force were also analyzed in groundwater conditions of dry and saturation. It appeared that the stress gets greater towards the slope center of the landslide, and the debris mass moves downwards. According to the analysis, the factor of safety becomes 1 with the rise of foundwater level up to -0.85 m from the slope surface, while the slope tends to stay stable during dry seasons.

The abrupt failure of slope caused by a concentrated rainfall would be a disaster in this country. Specially, the soil slope may be collapsed by the rainfall seepage, however, there is not much information for the mechanism of slope failure during rainfall. As analyzing the stability of slope by rainfall, the conventional method is to put the ground-water level on the surface of slope. However, it may provide the over-reinforcement for the slope stability. Futhermore, although over-reinforcement for the slope was fulfilled, the possibility of potential slope failure still exists. In this study, the slope stability by the conventional design method and the causes of unstable slope during rainfall were investigated. To analyze the slope stability by rainfall, the computer program SEEP/W for the analysis of seepage was used. As changing the intensity and duration of rainfall in SEEP/W, the analysis were performed. After completion of analysis, the porewater pressure data from SEEP/W was applied to SLOPE/W. As a results of this analysis, it is not reasonable that the groundwater level is going up to the surface of slope during rainfall. Therefore, the conventional reinforcement for the slope stability is not obvious to satisfy the criterion safety factor during rainfall. The reasonable counterplan is to install drainage hole on the surface of slope in order to prevent erosion and debris flow.

The casualties due to slope failures such as landslide, rock fall, debris flow etc. are about 24% in total casualties caused by natural disasters for the last 10 years. And these slope failures are focused in the season in which typhoon and torrential rain take place. Not much attention, however, have been put into landslide mitigation research. Meanwhile, USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) forms the self-organization network, and transfers the information among sensor nodes that have computing technology ability. Accordingly, USN is embossed a social point technology. The objective of this paper is to develop a prototype system for slope failure monitoring using USN technology. For this we develop module that collects and change slope movement data measured by two tiltermeter and a tension wire, store transferred data in database. Also we develop application program that can easily analyze the data. We apply the prototype system to a test site at KICT for testing and analyzing the system's performance.
This study presents a newly suggested test method of Mode II fracture toughness measurement called "Punch Through Shear Test" which was originally proposed by Backers and Stephansson in 2001. The purpose of this study is to check the validity of the suggested testing method by performing Mode II fracture toughness tests for Daejeon Granite. In addition, the optimal specimen geometry for the testing and the relation between Mode II fracture toughness and confining pressure were also investigated. Fractured surface was observed to be very smooth with lots of rock debris which came off fracture surface which obviously implies that the surface was sheared off. This confirms that Mode II fracturing actually occurred. In addition, numerical analyses including continuum analysis, particle flow code analysis and crack propagation simulations were performed. Results of these numerical analyses indicated that the cracks occurred in the specimen were predominantly in Mode II and these cracks led to failure of the test specimen. From this investigation, it can be concluded that the newly suggested "Punch Through Shear Test" method provides a reliable means of determining the Mode II fracture toughness. fracture toughness.
The shear strength and deformation characteristics of granular soils at low confining stresses differ from those with high confining stresses. Thus, the clear understanding of geotechnical problems related to the low confining stress state such as the stability of shallow foundations, embankments, slope failure, debris flow characteristics and liquefaction as well as the various laboratory model tests is needed. In this study, drained triaxial compression tests with the cell pressures from 5 kPa to 300 kPa were performed on dry Jumunjin sand. The results show that the internal friction angle and deformation modulus are dependent on the confining stress. Also, the correlations between them on the dense and loose sand were established.
