  • Conventional block-based video coders induce annoying blocking artifacts in very low bitarte coding. We propose a delocking filter which is appropriate for real time operation in a conventional video decoder. The proposed algorithm uses on dimensional filtering across block boundaries horizontally and vertiaclly with two separate filtering modes. The mode decision is quite simple but is fully based on the characteristics of human visual system and video sequences. In flat regions, a strong smoothing filter is appliced; and in the other regions, a moew sophisticated smoothing filter, which is based on the frequency information around block boundaries, is used to reduce blocking artifacts without introuducing undesired blur. Eeven though the proposed deblocking filter is quite simple, simulation results show that it improves both subjective and objective image quality for various image features.

  • In this paper, we introduce the CNN-based in-loop technology for HEVC, and analyze the performance of these algorithms through comparative experiments. The current in-loop filters in HEVC are composed of a deblocking filter that removes noise and a sample adaptive offset filter that compensates for signal offsets. A couple of CNN-based filters replacing the roles of these two algorithms are selected and compared.

  • A new approach for reducing the blocking artifact is proposed in this paper. This method can be applied to conventional transform coding, without introducing additional information or significant blurring. Main drawbacks of the Discrete Cosine Transform(DCT) are visible block boundaries due to coarse quantization of the coefficients. Therefore, restoration techniques result in unnecessary blurring of the image. The proposed deblocking algorithm is based on the heuristic approach for edge detection. All edges of the standard still images are categorized, and the best edges are selected. Several images are used fer experiments, and several other previous algorithms are compared with the proposed approach. The results show that the proposed algorithm works better than those of other previous researches. This algorithm can be used for JPEG, MPEG, and H.261 standard images.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient instruction set architecture using vector register file hardware to accelerate operation of general matrix-vector operations in DSP microprocessor. The technique enables in-situ row-access as well as column access to the register files. It can reduce the number of memory access significantly. The technique is especially useful for block-based video signal processing kernels such as FFT/IFFT, DCT/IDCT, and two-dimensional filtering. We have applied the new instruction set architecture to in-loop deblocking filter processing in H.264 decoder. Performance comparisons show that the required load/store operations for the in-loop deblocking filter can be reduced about 42%. The architecture would improve the processing speed, and code density in DSP microprocessor especially for video signal processing substantially.

  • H.264/AVC adopts new features compared with previous multimedia algorithms. It is inefficient to implement some of the new blocks using existing DSP instructions. Hence, new instructions are required to implement H.264/AVC. This paper proposes novel instructions for intra-prediction, in-loop deblocking filter, entropy coding and integer transform. Performance comparisons show that the required computation cycles for the in-loop deblocking filter can be reduced about $20{\sim}25%$. This paper also proposes new instructions for the integer transform. The proposed instructions can execute one dimension forward/inverse integer transform. The integer transform can be implemented using much smaller hardware size than existing DSPs.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive blocking artifact reduction algorithm using characteristics of the block boundaries. Blocking artifacts contain the high frequency components near the block boundaries, so the lowpass filtering can remove them. But a simple lowpass filtering results into blurring by remove important features such as edges. To overcome this problem, we determine the modes depending on the characteristics around boundaries then proper filter is applied to each area. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves deblocking performance compared to that of MPEG-4.

  • In this paper, the conventional deblocing algorithms are compared in each region of the image. Based on the comparison result, we propose a new deblocklng algorithm that can improve subjectives as well as the objective quality. Because the human visual system is mode sensitive to the blocking artifacts in the low frequency re91on, we compare the performance of several deblocking algorithms in 7he low and high frequency region separately. For this purpose we also propose an algorithm for classifying the region into low and high frequency ones. and propose a deblocking algorithm which is applied differently to each region. The result shows that the adaptive LPF method yields the best performance in the low frequency region in terms of both subjective and objective quality. Hence. by applying the adaptive LPF method to the low frequency region, the performance of conventional algorithms can be improved. In the high frequency region. it is observed that the DCT-based POCS algorithm provides the best performance. Hence, by combining the algorithm with the adaptive LPF method, the best objective performance is obtained.

  • Multiview Video Coding contains a macroblock-based illumination compensation tool which can compensate the variations of illuminations according to view or temporal directions. Thanks to illumination compensation tool, the coding efficiency of Multiview Video Coding has been enhanced. However illumination compensation tool also generates additional subjective drawbacks of the blocking artifacts due to macroblock-based compensations of mean values. A deblocking filtering method for Multiview Video Coding which is the same as in H.264/AVC does not consider illumination difference between the illumination compensated blocks, thus it can not effectively eliminate the blocking artifacts. Therefore, this paper analyzes the phenomena of blocking artifacts caused by illumination compensation and proposes a method which can effectively eliminate the blocking artifacts with the minimum changes of the H.264 deblockding filtering method. In the simulation results, it can be easily found the blocking artifacts are clearly eliminated in the subjective comparisons, and the average bit-rate reduction is up to 1.44%.

  • H.264/AVC among moving picture compression standard is the standard format for high compression rate and reliable video transimission. It generates blocking effects in video due to compressing video using block-based DCT and includes de-blocking filter to reduce blocking effect. Therefore, the filter makes the video over-smoothing and the quality of it is reduced. In this paper, we propose a improved de-blocking filter to solve the demerit. The proposed de-blocking filter redetermine the block boundary strength and apply the comer filtering to eliminate artifacts in low frequency domain. To evaluate the performance, we apply the proposed deblocking filter and exiting method to various video and evaluated the quality of image subjectively and objectively by analyzing the result. The simulation result shows the proposed method preserves the edge of video, reduces blocking effects and improves PSNR than the existing method.
