Objective: Information regarding the vitamin content of silage is limited. This study investigated the changes in the vitamin content of alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages with or without a lactic acid bacterial inoculant. Methods: Alfalfa at the early flowering stage and Chinese leymus at the full-bloom stage were harvested. The treatments for each forage type were control (deionized water only) and $1{\times}10^6$ colony-forming units Lactobacillus plantarum (LP)/g fresh matter. After 45 days of ensiling, all silages were sampled for evaluating the vitamin content, fermentation quality and chemical composition. Results: The LP inoculant decreased the pH value and ammonia nitrogen content of the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages and significantly (p<0.05) increased the lactic acid, acetic acid concentrations and Flieg's points. Prior to ensiling, the levels of five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol in alfalfa were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those in Chinese leymus. Ensiling decreased the levels of the five B-group vitamins in both alfalfa and Chinese leymus while increasing the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus. The thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid levels in the LP-treated silage were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in the untreated silage for the alfalfa and Chinese leymus. The ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content in the LP-treated alfalfa silage was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in the untreated alfalfa silage. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in pyridoxine content between the untreated and LP-treated silages for both forages. Conclusion: With or without LP inoculation, the levels of the five B-group vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and pyridoxine) in alfalfa and Chinese leymus decreased after 45 days of ensiling, while the ${\alpha}$-tocopherol content of Chinese leymus increased. The LP inoculant improved the fermentation quality of both the alfalfa and Chinese leymus silages but increased the thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid loss in the two forages after fermentation.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest factors on fruit quality and the incidence of storage disorders in 'Fuji' apple during CA storage. Incidence of storage disorders varied, depending on the growing regions, field conditions, and altitude of the orchards. Results indicated that fruit maturity may play a crucial role in the incidence and severity of flesh browning and watercore. The incidence of these storage disorders increased with fruit maturity until 180 days after full bloom (DAFB). In addition, occurrence of watercore was correlated with the incidence of flesh browning during CA storage. The incidence of flesh browning was positively correlated with the sum of the diurnal temperature range from September through October and amount of precipitation from August to October in 1996-1999 growing years. These results suggested that 'Fuji' apple should be harvested no later than 180 DAFB because the late harvested fruits were prone to development of watercore which was correlated with the incidence of flesh browing during CA storage in Korea.
This study was carried out to verify the effect of fruit thinning on fruit development, and the results were as follows. The number of cells between fruit epidermis and periphery vascular bundle during 35 to 184 days after full bloom (DAFB) were constant with 14~17 cells, regardless of thinning at pink bud stage, fruitlet stage or non-thinning. However, the distance between epidermis and vascular bundle was longest in the fruit thinned at pink stage followed by fruits thinned at fruitlet stage and control. Therefore, it was seemed that the fruit size increment during 35 to 184 DAFB was due to the increment of cell size. Thinning time affected fruit size and the earlier the thinning times were the bigger the fruits were. However, there were no direct relationships between thinning time and the starch or tannin particle development in the cells of the fruit.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of formulation of fungicides on epicuticular waxes in 'Campbell Early' grapes. Non-bagged and bagged berries were treated with wettable powder, suspension concentrate and emulsifiable concentrate 15 days after full bloom (DAFB) and 48 DAFB (veraison), respectively. Fruit skin was observed by naked eye and scanning electron microscope (SEM) at harvest. Remarkable white blots were observed on the berries treated 48 DAFB in the order of wettable powder, suspension concentrate, and emulsifiable concentrate. The observation by SEM showed all formulations of fungicides damaged the ultra-structure of epicuticular waxes; also, an unknown substance was observed on treatment with wettable powder and suspension concentrate. Moreover epicuticular wax appeared to be melting on the grapes treated with emulsifiable concentrate. Also, non-bagged grapes showed serious contamination of epicuticular wax by some unknown substance, but bagged grapes had only fungicides' traces.
This experiment was carried out to clarify the effects of gibberellin(GA) aplication and bagging on repeening and quality in 'Delaware' grape berries. Treatments are 4 plots(2X2 factorial experiment); GA, GA+bagging, bagging and control. The clusters were dipped twice in 100 ppm GA with GA treatment : 10 days before and after the full bloom. The results obtained as follows: 1. GA treatment made the seedless grape berry reduced in the fresh weight but it hastened the ripening period about 2 weeks. 2. Total soluble solid(TSS), viscosity and pH value of berry juice increased with maturation. The concentration of TSS and viscosity were higher in GA treatment plot than GA non-treatment. 3. Berry-hardness, titratable acidity and alcohol inslouble solid(AIS) decreased with maturation. Expically berry-hardness and AIS decreased more greatly in GA non-treatment than GA treatment. 4. The concentration of anthocyanin increased with ripening but pectic substance didn't fluctuate nearly. These of anthocyanin and pectin were higher in GA non-treatment plot than GA treatment. 5. By analysis of factorial experiment GA treatment was highly significant with the $^{o}$Brix/Acidity ratio, juice viscosity and AIS, but high negatively, significant with berry-hardness and berry fresh weight. And it was significant with T S S and negatively, titratable acidity. Bagging was significant with $^{o}$Brix/Acidity ratio and AIS content, but negatively, titratable acidity. 6. Qualitative characters were high correlated with the $^{o}$Brix/Acidity ratio in simple correlation but direct effect by the path-coefficient analysis didn't coincide with simple correlation. The direct effect of pH was large and juice viscosity, the next. And that of berry-hardness was negligible but, AIS, small negatively.
Fruit bagging has been widely practiced in peach cultivation to produce high quality and unblemished fruit. Moreover, fruit bagging has been utilized to study the effect of shading on the quality of fruit. We conducted a proteomic analysis on peach fruit to elucidate the biochemical and physiological events that characterize the effect of bagging treatment. Comparative analysis of 2D electrophoresis (2-DE) gels showed that relative protein levels differed significantly at 125 DAFB (days after full bloom), as well as at 133 DAFB in fruit that had been bagged until 125 DAFB, followed by exposure to sunlight. Most of the proteins with altered expression were identified by MALDI TOF/TOF. Twenty-one proteins with differential expression among the groups were identified at 125 DAFB, while thirty proteins with differential expression among the groups were identified at 133 DAFB. The analysis revealed that expression of proteins involved in photosynthesis, stress responses, and biochemical processes influencing metabolism were altered during bagging treatment, suggesting that regulation of the synthesis of carbohydrates, amino acids, and proteins influenced fruit size, solid/acid ratio, and peel color. This work provides the first characterization of proteomic changes in peach in response to fruit bagging treatment. Identifying and tracking protein changes may allow us to better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects of bagging treatment.
This study was determined to change in chemical composition of Mume(Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc) fruits during maturation. There were no differences in the soluble solid and moisture content among varieties, but the soluble solid slowly increased with maturing. The pH and ash content were slightly decreased with maturation. The green color of 'Nanko' fruits was maintained for 92days after full bloom at the greeness value of -3.81 Whereas, the chlorophyll content of 'Koume' fruits remarkably decreased and it was not suitable for the processing of immature green Mume fruits. The titratable acidity increased during maturation. The organic acids were mainly composed of malic acid and citric acid. The malic acid was significantly decreased during maturation, whereas citric acid increased. Major free sugars and sugar alcohols were sucrose, glucose, fructose, sorbitol and maltose. Sucrose content increased as the maturity proceeded, whereas glucose and sorbitol were decreased. The total contesnt of free amino acids decreased with maturation and the total free amino acids in the flesh of fruits were occupied by asparagine at the range of 60 to 78%.

This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of GA3 solution dipping treatment after 1 days full bloom on spike growth and fruit quality at harvest of 'Campbell Early' grapevine. The fruit cluster growth(weight, length, width) and fruit stalk(diameter, length) at harvest were increased significantly by GA3 10 mg·L-1 solution dipping treatment compared to control and another concentration. The berry growth (berry No, weight, length, diameter) at harvest showed no difference by treatment GA3 concentration different. Spike weight was increased by GA3 5, 10, 20, mg·L-1 treatment compared to control, but no difference GA3 40 mg·L-1 treatment. The degree of compact berry, bloom, skin color and SSC at harvest by GA3 solution dipping treatment were not significantly different from those of control. but increased seedlessness induction by GA3 10 mg·L-1 treatment. The occurrence percent of berry cracking by GA3 5, 10, 20, 40 mg·L-1 treatment significantly decreased. The bitter rot of berry harvest showed no difference by treatment GA3 concentration different. Total spike length was increased by GA3 5, 10 mg·L-1 treatment compared to control and GA3 20, 40 mg·L-1 treatment. The spike length of 1st from 15th to position increased by GA3 10 mg·L-1 treatment.
In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Changjo', developed from a cross between 'Tama' and '81-1-27' ('Danbae' ${\times}$ 'Okusankichi') in 1995 and named in 2009, to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the market quality and broaden the cultivation area. The fruits of 'Changjo' pears harvested from 132 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 160 DAFB. Fruit growth and quality indices were monitored at 1 week interval by measuring fruit weight, length, diameter, firmness, and taste related quality indices. The calculated fruit fresh weight increased continuously with fruit development and reached to an average of 594g on Sep. 20 (160 DAFB). The ratio of length to diameter declines as fruit maturation progress, resulting in 0.898 for ripe fruit stage as a round oblate shape. Flesh firmness of 'Changjo' pears showed over 30N until 153 DAFB and then decreased abruptly with fruit ripening, reaching a final level of about 26.44N on 160 DAFB. Starch content of fruit sap was also decreased abruptly after 146 DAFB which decreased almost half of the fruits harvested at 139 DAFB. In parallel with the decrease of flesh firmness, ethanol insoluble solids (EIS) content decreased sharply with fruit ripens, only 50% of EIS was detected on the fruits harvested on 160 DAFB when compared to that of the fruits harvested on 139 DAFB (Aug. 30). The maximum value of soluble solids contents was observed in the fruits harvested on 153 DAFB, resulting in $14.2^{\circ}Brix$. The changes of skin color difference $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after 139 DAFB, coincide with the decrease of SPAD value of the fruit skin. The sugars of the 80% ethanol soluble fraction consisted mainly of fructose, sorbitol, glucose and sucrose, also increased during maturation and ripening. Fructose and sucrose contents were larger than those of glucose and sorbitol in flesh tissues. These results were explained that stored starch is converted to soluble sugars during fruit maturation, mainly in fructose and sucrose increasing the sweetness of this cultivar. Total polyphenols were increased up to middle of fruit maturation (146 DAFB) and then decreased continuously until the end of fruit maturation. Consequently, our results suggested that the commercial harvest time of 'Changjo' pears should not be passed 153 DAFB and late harvest of this cultivar would not good for quality maintenance during shelf-life. As a result of the post-harvest low-temperature acclimation experiment during the short-term transportation period, fruits harvested at 146 DAFB tended to maintain higher firmness after 14 days of simulated marketing at $25^{\circ}C$ compared to fruits harvested at 153 DAFB regardless of temperature set. And, the slower the rate of decrease to the final transport temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, the higher the incidence of internal browning and ethylene production. Therefore, in order to suppress the physiological disorder and to maintain the fruit quality when exporting to Southeast Asia in the 'Chanjo' pears, it is desirable to lower the temperature of the fruits within a short time after harvest and to set the harvest time before 146 days after full bloom.

Pear has a gametophytic self-incompatibility (SI) system and its SI reaction is controlled by a single multi-allelic S-locus. 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' was selected from a cross between 'Wonwhang', early season major pear cultivar with high fruit quality and self-incompatible, and 92-18-79 (${S_4}^{sm}{S_4}^{sm}$) obtained from self cross of 'Osa-nijisseiki' (${S_2S_4}^{sm}$) (SM, stylar-part mutant), self-compatible bud mutant that originated from self-incompatible 'Nijisseiki' ($S_2S_4$) made in 2001 at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration in Korea. '92-18-79' was selected as a self-compatible source through field investigation. It bloomed 1 day earlier than 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and similar to 'Wonwhang' in 2008. It is medium in tree vigor and spreading in tree habit. 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' is classified as highly susceptible to pear scab (Venturia nashicola) similar to 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and as resistant to black spot (Alternaria kikuchiana) similar to 'Wonwhang'. It had 65.7% fruiting rate by self pollination. The average optimum harvest time of 'Wonkyo Na-jasoojung 2' was 148 days after full bloom and it matured 2 days earlier than 'Osa-Nijisseiki' and 11 days later than 'Wonwhang'. The fruit is roundish oblate in shape and yellowish brown in skin color. Average fruit weight was 445 g and soluble solids content was 13.3 $^{\circ}Brix$. The flesh had abundant juice and negligible grit.
