  • Objective: This study was determined the influence of virginiamycin supplementation on growth-performance and characteristics of digestion of cattle with decreasing dietary net energy value of the diet for maintenance ($NE_m$) from 2.22 to 2.10 Mcal/kg. Methods: Eighty crossbred beef steers ($298.2{\pm}6.3kg$) were used in a 152-d performance evaluation consisting of a 28-d adaptation period followed by a 124-d growing-finishing period. During the 124-d period steers were fed either a lesser energy dense (LED, $2.10Mcal/kg\;NE_m$) or higher energy dense (HED, $2.22Mcal/kg\;NE_m$) diet. Diets were fed with or without 28 mg/kg (dry matter [DM] basis) virginiamycin in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement. Four Holstein steers ($170.4{\pm}5.6kg$) with cannulas in the rumen (3.8 cm internal diameter) and proximal duodenum were used in $4{\times}4$ Latin square experiment to study treatment effects on characteristics of digestion. Results: Neither diet energy density nor virginiamycin affected average daily gain (p>0.10). As expected, dry matter intake and gain efficiency were greater (p<0.01) for LED- than for HED-fed steers. Virginiamycin did not affect estimated net energy value of the LED diet. Virginiamycin increased estimated NE of the HED diet. During daylight hours when the temperature humidity index averaged $81.3{\pm}2.7$, virginiamycin decreased (p<0.05) ruminal temperature. Virginiamycin did not influence (p>0.10) ruminal or total tract digestion. Ruminal (p = 0.02) and total tract digestion (p<0.01) of organic matter, and digestible energy (p<0.01) were greater for HED vs LED. Ruminal microbial efficiency was lower (p<0.01) for HED vs LED diets. Conclusion: The positive effect of virginiamycin on growth performance of cattle is due to increased efficiency of energy utilization, as effects of virginiamycin on characteristics of digestion were not appreciable. Under conditions of high ambient temperature virginiamycin may reduce body temperature.

  • Sky View Factor (SVF) is one of the urban morfometri parameters that impact on the Urban Heat Island (UHI). SVF analisys was conducted in the city of Jakarta to investigate the relationship between urban temperature with urban morfometri. Jakarta City is the most populous city in the world that has a surrounding area $66,152km^2$ and the total population around 23 million people. The population of the city is the sixth highest in the world today. SVF measurements done by taking pictures at the six stations that have different morphological characteristics namely (1) the narrow streets Apartment Cempaka Mas (JS ITC), (2) the width of the road Apartment Cempaka Mas (JL ITC), (3) in front of Colleges Kanisius (DKK), (4) in front of office Journalist of Indonesia (DKWI), (5) Utan Kayu (UK), and (6) Tambun (TB). SVF value is obtained from the photgraphic image. Taking pictures at the location using a Nikon D90 camera with a Nikon Fisheye Nikkor 10.5 mm 1 : 2.8 G ED, further processed through a global mapper program. Therefore, the SVF derived from the six stations that vary 0.21 to 0.78. Temperature measurement is done during daylight hours from 06:00 am to 18:00 pm during the Western Part of Indonesia (WIB). Measurements performed at three different times, namely working days (HK) regular holidays (HCB) national holidays (HCN). The results showed that the highest average temperature of $33.32^{\circ}C$, occurring at UK station (SVF=0.45) at the time of HCB. Meanwhile, the average low temperature of $31.22^{\circ}C$ occurred at JLITC station (SVF=0.42). The two-time occurred on ordinary holidays. Maximum temperature of $38.4^{\circ}C$ occurred in Utan Kayu station (SFV=0.45) that occurred at 11.00 hrs, normal holidays. Furthermore minimum temperature 24.5 occurred at Tambun station (SVF=0.78) at 06.00 hrs in the morning at the usual holidays and national holidays. In general, the results showed that areas with large SVF has a lower temperature compared with areas with smaller SVF. Though, are not the only factors that matter, but this research may show that an increase in temperature in the city of Jakarta. Therefore, it is necessary to mitigate the serious from the government or society.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of low temperature on starch accumulation in rice grains. We used four major Japonica-type Korean rice cultivars as materials: Jinbu (JB), Junamjosaeng (JJ), Geumyoung (GY), and Hwawang (HW). Rice plants were moved into two phytotrons the day after heading. Temperatures in the two phytotrons were maintained at $19/29^{\circ}C$ (night/day) as the control, and $13/23^{\circ}C$ as the low temperature condition, both under natural daylight with a relative humidity of 65%. The ripening rates of JB and JJ showed no significant difference between the low temperature and control conditions at 45 days after heading (DAH). In contrast, the ripening rates of GY and HW were 86% and 57% lower than those of JB and JJ under the low temperature condition at 45 DAH, respectively. However, the ripening rates of these four varieties at 61 DAH (when accumulated temperature reached $1,100^{\circ}C$) under the low temperature condition were similar to those at 45 DAH under the control condition (JB, 94%; JJ, 97%; GY, 97%; HW, 88%). The total starch contents showed no significant difference between the control and low temperature conditions. However, the amylose contents in the cultivars were higher under the low temperature than under the control condition. The enzyme activities of starch biosynthesis were about 5-10 days slower in cultivars under the low temperature than under the control. The grain-filling rate showed significant correlations with the enzyme activities of SuSase ($r^2=0.70^{***}$), AGPase ($r^2=0.63^{***}$), UDPase ($r^2=0.36^{***}$), StSase ($r^2=0.51^{***}$), and SBE ($r^2=0.59^{***}$). In conclusion, although StSase activity was increased at $13/23^{\circ}C$ up to 20 DAH, there might not be enough time for SBE to synthesize amylopectin, thus affecting the amylose content of HW, which had the slowest grain filling rate. Notably, the decreased activity of SuSase and SBE and late increase in AGPase activity under the low temperature during the ripening stage are considered to be disadvantageous, as they delay ripening and increase the amylose content.

  • The effects of photoperiod, temperature, and fish size on oxygen consumption (OC) in the black porgy Acanthopagrus schlegeli, a euryhaline marine teleost, were studied using a closed recirculating seawater system with a respiratory chamber. Fish reared in indoor recirculating seawater tanks were divided into two groups: small (15.7-55.8 g, mean 38.1$\pm$15.9 g) and large (108.7-238.8 g, mean 181.8$\pm$54.9 g) fish. The OC of the fish showed a clear diel rhythm, with higher values in the daytime and lower values at night, in accordance with light (09:00-20:59 h) and dark (21:00-08:59 h) cycles. The OC of the fish increased linearly with the water temperature. The OC was the highest at 10:00 h, one hour after the onset of daylight and was the lowest at 03:00 h, six hours after dusk. The average OC at $20^{\circ}C$ during the light period was as high as 219.8 mg $O_2$/kg/h in the small fish and 156.3 mg $O_2$/kg/h in the large fish, while during the dark period it was as low as 130.5 and 110.4 mg $O_2$/kg/h, respectively. The OC during the dark period, which showed limited variation, could be regarded as the resting OC, and was 107.6, 130.5, and 219.8 mg $O_2$/kg/h at 15, 20, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, in small fish, and 52.3, 110.4, and 171.0 mg $O_2$/kg/h in large fish. As the body weight of black porgy increased, the OC decreased exponentially and the relationship was expressed as OC=1,222.8$BW^{-0.567}$, OC=1,113.2$BW^{-0.448}$, and OC=1,495.3$BW^{-0.468}$ at 15, 20, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. At a fish density of 14.5 g/L at $20^{\circ}C$, black porgy had the highest OC per breath compared to fish at the same density at 15 or $25^{\circ}C$. This suggests that the black porgy responds to the stocking density (15 kg/$m^3$) and water temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) conditions commonly observed in intensive aquaculture with the deepest breath and the highest metabolic activity.

  • Seed dormancy and germination responses to light and gases were determined for Echinochloa colona (L.) Link. E. colons seeds did not require a period of after-ripening for breaking dormancy. Water movement occurred readily across the seed coat. Repeated cycles of hydration and dehydration reduced viability and thence germination. Water imbibition for 24 h increased seed moisture by 21%; seeds returned to their original weight after drying at room temperature for 13 h. Removal of seed-coats increased germination in the dark. Light stimulated germination. Germination at a daylight intensity of 51.9 $Wm^{-2}$ or less was significantly reduced. Germination of seeds which were exposed to light for 1 h each day was significantly less than that of seeds exposed for longer than 2 h a day. Seeds subjected to blue light had delayed and decreased germination compared to seeds exposed to red light. Ethylene or carbon dioxide exogenenously added in the presence of light stimulated germination. The addition of the two gases together had a synergistic effect. In the dark, however, the two gases did not increase germination.

  • Anthers contanining uninucleate microspores of eight cultivars of pepper were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 0.004mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1mg/L kinetin, 3% sucrose and 0.2% Gelrite, kept at $35^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, and then cultured at $25^{\circ}C$ with a photoperiod of 16 h daylight for 40 days. Frequency of embryoid and callus formation was varied with cultivars. Embryoid formation was found in Cheongyang and Fushimi Amanaga, while callus formation was in California Wonder, Fushimi Amanaga and Geoseong. In anther culture medium supplemented with 1% activated charcoal, embryoid formation was found with 0.5% of frequency only in Cheongyang, while no callus formation was found. In 1/2MS medium, frequency of embryoid formation in Shishitou, Yatsufusa and Taka no Tsume was 1.2%, 0.4% and 0.4%, respectively. On the other hand, in 1/2 B5 medium, frequency of callus formation in Yatsufusa and Taka no Tsume was 2.8% and 2.7%, respectively. Embryoids transferred to hormone-free MS medium were developed to plantlets and acclimatized. The number of chromosomes in the root tip cells of the haploid plant was 2n=$\times$=12 in cv. • The berry growth and pericarp characteristics were characterized to confirm the effects of bagging periods on berry cracking during berry development in 'Kyoho' grape. The berry weight was the highest at 13.4 g in late period of bagging treated at 7 to 9 weeks after full bloom (WAFB) as compared with the lowest of 12.3 g in total period bagging. The berry cracking rate under critical turgor pressure in the non-bagging control was 53.3%, while those of bagging treatments were decreased in the order of 42.7%, 37.3%, 33.3%, and 18.7% in bagged during 3 to 9, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, and 7 to 9 WAFB, respectively. In the results of observation on histological characteristics of pericarp, berry lenticels of whole bagging treatments had smaller and normal shape compared with non-bagging control treatment. Especially on the pericarp of late period bagged during 7 to 9 WAFB, suberization around stomata and micro-cracking were not observed and structural strength of pericarp was increased with thicker sub-epidermal layer and cell wall. Therefore, the results indicate that bagging treatment for two weeks just before the veraison when the day length and daylight is relatively longer and stronger can effectively reduce berry cracking by strengthening structure of pericarp in 'Kyoho' grape.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the northwestern water of Jeju Island, based on seven oceanographic stations in July, 1980. Submarine daylight intensity was measured at intervals of 5m depth in the upper 70m layer by using the underwater irradiameter(Kahlsico #268 WA360). The mean absorption coefficients of the sea water were appeared as 0.106(0.084-0.152), 0.135(0.106-0.184), 0.089(0.069-0.130) for clear, red, green, and blue color respectively. The transparency ranged from 11 to 19 meters(mean 16.1m). The mean water color in this area was 4.3(3-5) in Forel scales. The relation between absorption coefficient(k) and transparency(D) was k=1.66/D, k=2.12/D, k=1.38/D, and k=1.51/D for clear, red green, and blue color respectively. The rates of light penetration for clear, red, green, and blue color in four different depths were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rates of light penetration in proportion to depths were as follows; clear : 56.57%(5m), 20.54%(15m), 4.60%(30m), 0.68%(50m). red : 50.14%(5m), 2.37%(30m), 0.23%(50m). green : 62.29%(5m), 26.43%(15m), 7.74%(30m), 1.56%(50m). blue : 59.29%(5m), 23.43%(15m), 6.10%(30m), 1.08%(50m).

  • In this paper, the HILS (Hardware In-the-Loop Simulation) system to analyze and to verify the performance of the targeting pod is addressed. The main functions of the targeting pod is acquiring and tracking targets to guide a LGB (Laser Guided Bomb) to the targets. For the analysis of targeting pod, the real time simulate images generation of IR and daylight cameras, sever control technology, and the analysis of laser transfer characteristics are necessary. For the real time image generation and the laser transfer characteristics analysis, off-the-shelf SDK(Software Development Kit) OKTAL-SE is used. For the servo controller, well-proven mechanism in the previous program is applied to increase servo control accuracy. To analyze the performance of a targeting pod in a realistic environment, 1553B, ARINK818 interface and etc. which are actually implemented in real combat aircrafts are applied in the system. By using the developed HILS system, the performance of currently operating targeting pods in real combat aircrafts can be analyzed and predicted. Additionally, the relationship between overall system performance and each module performance can be analyzed, the currently developed HILS system is expected to be a very useful tool to generate system development requirements of targeting pods and to reduce any possible future development risks.

  • Saponarin is a crucial component of barley sprout, and the production and quantitative analysis are issued to date. In this study, the optimal saponarin extraction conditions were presented on the subject of acetonitrile, ethanol, methanol, and water for the quantitative analysis in barley sprout through the extraction efficiency compared with the solvent concentration and extraction time using the reaction surface methodology. The optimal extraction time and solvent condition for saponarin were 3.9 h and 53.7% of aqueous methanol, respectively. In addition, the effect of LED artificial light on the saponarin production in barley sprouts was evaluated by the light cycle, light quantity, and light quality. The optimal cultivation conditions under artificial light for the growth of barley sprout and saponarin production were most effectively achieved on 220-320 μmol m-2 s-1 of the light quantity with 8 h day-1 of a daylight cycle under 6500K LED combined with red light. Furthermore, blue light was evaluated as the main factor in the biosynthesis of saponarin.
