Recently, energy depleting problem have risen seriously. Many studies of daylight responsive dimming system for saving of lighting energy in office buildings have been done actively. Most of studies are focused on the accuracy. However if the variation of dimming levels is changed too often, occupants would feel uncomfortable. First, illuminance changes which occupants couldn't detect are studied through analyzing foreign studies. Second, workplan illuminance from daylight in each sky condition is measured. Because the dimming level In daylight responsive dimming system is dependent on the workplan illuminance from daylight. In conclusion, the most appropriate polling periods to daylight responsive dimming system for occupant's visual comfort was determined.
Background and objective: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on trees that can be used for planting design and construction for permanently shaded areas by grasping the growth status of trees according to the daylight conditions of the outdoor spaces of apartment complexes. Methods: On the recently completed apartment complexes, daylight conditions were analyzed by using daylight simulations utilizing Solar Access Analysis of Ecotect Analysis. With a criteria for assessment of tree condition, the defect rate of trees planted in permanently shaded areas and green spaces with good daylight conditions was analyzed to suggest trees applicable to permanently shaded areas. The first tree survey was conducted from November 18, 2019 to February 15, 2020, focusing on trees planted in permanently shaded areas, and the second tree survey of all the trees planted on the study sites including permanently shaded areas was conducted from March 16 to March 30, 2020. Results: Evergreen trees which are classified as shade intolerant trees including Pinus densiflora, Thuja occidentalis, and Abies holophylla showed a higher defect rate of trees among the trees planted in permanently shaded areas. Taxus cuspidata, Zelkova serrata, Cornus kousa, Chionanthus retusus and Acer palmatum which are classified as shade tolerant trees and shade moderate tolerance trees seemed to be able to be used in the plant design of permanently shaded areas in apartment complexes because the trees showed good growth and a low tree defect rate. In addition, although it was excluded from the analysis due to a small number of samples, Sorbus commixta and Prunus cerasifera var. atropurpurea also can be used for planting in permanently shaded areas. Conclusion: The daylight simulation technique used to analyze permanent shaded areas in this study can be used as an analysis tool considering the daylight environment at the stages of design and construction, and additional research will be required to analyze tree growth according to daylight conditions through data accumulation and monitoring by managing records throughout the entire life cycle of trees in the process of planting and maintenance.
Window and shading designs have a great influence on energy consumption and daylighting in buildings. As far as energy is concerned, small window area is advantageous. But it is not good to the patient healing in hospital. So it is important to find out the optimum window shape which is favorable for both energy consumption and patient healing. In this study, annual energy consumption and daylight illumination levels were analyzed according to the window shapes and shading devices for a multi-beded patient room in hospitals. The simulations were conducted for 19 different cases by COMFEN 4.0 computer simulation program. The results of this paper are as follows. First, window to wall area ratio and shading devices have great influences on annual energy consumption. But it is a problem in that they decrease significantly daylight level in bed room. Second, considering the same energy consumption, reducing the width of window rather than the hight of window is desirable for the secure of daylight level. Third, increase of the number of horizontal shade is not desirable in south face of the building for the energy consumption and daylight level. Fourth, sun shade is not necessary in north face of the building for the energy consumption and daylight level.
Today, there are increasing evidences that daylight is essential for health, well-being and productivity. One of the strong contributions, which atria can make to advantages in building, is in allowing the use of daylight. This research is to develop nomographs and to evaluate the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers. For this purpose, the evaluation models of toplit atria with well indexes of 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 have been selected through the field surveys of atrium buildings in Seoul area. Also, weather data for solar irradiance and luminous efficacy were gathered from the recently conducted previous researches. The computer simulations were performed under clear sky conditions, using the ADELINE program, and various daylight performances were analyzed by the daylight illumination ratio. Analyzing the simulation results, solar altitude, solar azimuth, and louver angle and louver reflectance were found to be important factors affecting the daylight performance of toplit atria. Using these variables, regression equations have been formulated, and the nomographs, which may predict the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers, were developed. The developed nomographs were validated through comparing the results of nomograph predictions to the results of scale-model experiments.
Currently, the energy consumption of electric lighting in an office building is accounted for more than 30% of the total energy consumption. In order to reduce the energy consumed by the indoor lighting, the daylight as a natural energy resource can play an important role in energy savings. The daylight can have positive impacts on improvement of work efficiency and productivity, and also make people feel more psychologically stable. Moreover, by using the daylight, we can definitely reduce the energy consumption in office buildings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the LED dimming ratio depending on the ratio by calculating the amount of artificial illumination required according to the change of daylight by using the light simulation software that can quantify and visualize the performance of daylight. As a result, the energy savings could be obtained up to 30%.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the state-of-the-art daylighting design among LEED(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) multi-family housing cases and to explore the feasibilities for their applications in domestic housing design. Occupants in multi-family houses are reported to consume more electricity power than those in single houses. That may imply the problems of daylighting design in domestic housing design for multi-family houses have better insulation system and less windows and outside walls than single houses. Therefore two systems, daylight delivery system and daylight control system, are scrutinized for daylighting design with LEED cases. The findings show when windows as a daylight delivery system are combined with overhangs, fins, louvers, fenestration materials, speciality fenestration, or interior controls as a daylight control system, the outcome goes with more energy savings and better facade design. Beside those, lightshelves as a daylight delivery system seem to have potentials in domestic multi-family houses with deep plans and less outside walls. Daylighting designs in domestic multi-family houses need to pursue available options more to achieve the integration of energy and aesthetics values.
Daylighting has a great effect on people inside the room. It is also closely related to the lighting energy consumption. Daylight factor(DF) is a very important index for evaluation of the daylighting in overcast sky. The objective of this study is to verify the suitability of the Tregenza's Modified Split Flux formula for the calculation of the daylight factor. We compared the daylight factors calculated by two methods; one by a measurement with 1/5 scale model and the other by the Daysim program. We used variables for verification as window wall ratios(WWR) and angles of the sky visible. As a result, daylight factor calculated by Modified Split Flux is similar to the measurement when more daylight enters the inside. And error is significantly increased when the angle of the sky visible is $50^{\circ}$.
This study examines influences of a daylight dimming control system on the variation of indoor illuminance and lighting energy savings in a small office space. Field measurements and a series of computation were performed for typical types of sky conditions in summer. Results indicate that the daylight illuminance under clear and partly-cloudy sky were close to the target illuminance during a majority of time due to a higher ratio of window to wall. However, the target illuminance was not kept successfully due to the variation of photosensor signals which were strongly influenced by desktop illuminance. The system with partially-shielded conditions succeeded to keep target illuminance under clear sky conditions. The system failed under overcast sky conditions since the electric light output from fixtures caused excessive signals to photosensors due to insufficient daylight on a desktop. Unshielded and fully-shielded conditions were not recommended for effective controls of the systems. The influence of lighting fixtures on photosensors should be minimized to achieve successful lighting controls by daylight dimming systems.
