  • This paper designs a data link between a Lunar Orbiter (LO) and an Earth Station (ES), and analyzes the downlink performance of a space communications system for lunar exploration, conforming to the recommendations by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). The results provided in the paper can be useful references for the design of reliable communication link for the Korean lunar exploration in the near future.

  • We chose the Kushiro wetland in Hokkaido, Japan, as a test site to monitor wetland areas. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can carry out continuous observation in any weather conditions, and can therefore be used to observe high humidity areas such as wetlands. We applied multi-parameter SAR data (dual-frequency, multi-polarization, and multi-incidence angle) to monitoring the wetland forest. To find the optimum incidence angle and polarization for monitoring the wetland biomass, a simple backscattering model of wetland vegetation was developed and applied to estimate backscattering coefficients for different biomass and surface conditions.

  • Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a promising active remote sensing technique to obtain large terrain information of the earth in all-weather conditions. SAR is useful in many applications, including terrain mapping and geographic information system (GIS), which use SAR display images. Usually, these applications need the enormous data storage because they deal with wide terrain images with high resolution. So, compression technique is a useful approach to deal with SAR display images with limited storage. Because there is some indispensable data loss through the conversion of a complex SAR image to a display image, some applications, which need high-resolution images, cannot tolerate more data loss during compression. Therefore, lossless compression is appropriate to these applications. In this paper, we propose a novel lossless compression technique for a SAR display image using one-step predictor and block arithmetic coding.

  • Autonomous cars require the integration of multiple communication systems for driving safety. Many carmakers unveil mirrorless concept cars aiming to replace rear and sideview mirrors in vehicles with camera monitoring systems, which eliminate blind spots and reduce risk. This paper presents optical vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for autonomous mirrorless cars. The flicker-free light emitting diode (LED) light sources, providing illumination and data transmission simultaneously, and a high speed camera are used as transmitters and a receiver in the OCC link, respectively. The rear side vehicle transmits both future action data and vehicle type data using a headlamp or daytime running light, and the front vehicle can receive OCC data from the camera that replaces side mirrors so as not to prevent accidents while driving. Experimental results showed that action and vehicle type information were sent by LED light sources successfully to the front vehicle's camera via the OCC link and proved that OCC-based V2V communications for mirrorless cars can be a viable solution to improve driving safety.

  • A data acquisition and monitoring system was developed for an automated system of a smart fish farm. The fish farm is located in Jang Hang, South Korea, and was designed as circulation filtration system. Information of every aquaculture pool was automatically measured by pH sensors, dissolved oxygen sensors, and water temperature sensors and the data were stored in the database in a remoted server. Modbus protocol was used for gathering the data which were further used to optimize the pool water quality to predict the rate of growth and death of fish, and to deliver food automatically as planned by the fish farmer. By using JSON protocol, the collected data was delivered to the user's PC and mobile phone for analysis and easy monitoring. The developed monitoring system allowed the fish farmers to improve fish productivity and maximize profits.

  • In this paper, we implement a Smart Mailbox using the Arduino and Bluetooth. Smart Mailbox alarm system was combining to the general mailbox. If a mail is arrived to the ultrasonic sensor mounted on the mailbox Smart Mailbox recognizes the mail and sends the smartphone data in real time through the Bluetooth module. Also it stores ultrasonic sensor data in Arduino when bluetooth communication is interrupted. Again it implemented a system for transferring the stored data when the bluetooth communication is made.

  • Telemetry link requires high data rate to transmit the multimedia data for lunar explorations in space communications. In this paper, we analyze a data rate with the modulation and channel coding schemes based on Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) in S, X, Ku and Ka bands, respectively. Then, we suggests modulation and channel coding schemes to meet the link margins and have a maximum data rate for lunar explorations in telemetry links.

  • For the flow facing high1y informationized age, there is a flow from fixed communications connecting fixed places such as offices and homes to mobile communications connecting mobile objets such as automobiles, ships and aircraft. This flow has added to diversifying communications Including data and images. While the axed mode is diversifying information media by digitalization of communications network and computers, the mobile mode has brought higher sophistication of communication modes by a higher degree of electric wave utilization. The following descriptions outlines the mobile communication which is utilizing the electric wave phenomena. In sequence the following items are described: a brief history of mobile communications, the technical object and various kinds of services, propagation of electric wave signal.
