  • This paper describes the effects of exciting frequency on the stiffness and damping coefticients of a 5-pad tilting pad journal bearing, LOP (load on pad) type. The stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated experimentally under the different values of exciting frequency, bearing load and shaft speed. These coefficients are estimated by measuring the response of the relative displacement between the bearing and the shaft and acceleration of the bearing due to the known exciting loads acting on the bearing. In order to analysis the response of exciting load, displacement and acceleration, a FFT analyzer is used. It is shown that the variation of exciting frequency has a little effect on both the stiffness and damping coefficients. Both the stiffness and damping coefficients in the loading direction are decreased by the increase of shaft speed but increased by the increase of bearing load.

  • A stability theory of a damped cantilever column under sub-tangential follower forces is first summarized based on the stability map. It is then demonstrated that internal and external damping can be exactly transformed to Rayleigh damping so that the damping coefficients can be effectively determined using proportional damping. Particularly a parametric study with variation of damping coefficients is performed in association with flutter loads of Beck's column and it is shown that two damping coefficients can be correctly estimated for real systems under the assumption of Rayleigh damping. Finally a frequency equation of a cantilever beam subjected to both a sub-tangentially follower force and two kinds of damping forces is presented in the closed-form and its stability maps are constructed and compared with FE solutions in the practical range of damping coefficients.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the frequency effects of the excitation force on the linear stiffness and damping coefficients of a LOP (load on pad) type five-pad tilting pad journal bearing with the diameter of 300.91 mm and the length of 149.80 mm. The main parameter of interest in the present work is excitation frequency to shake the test bearing. The excitation frequency is controlled independently, using orthogonally mounted hydraulic exciters. The relative movement between the bearing and shaft, and the acceleration of the bearing casing are measured as a function of excitation frequency using the different values of bearing load and shaft speed. Measurements show that the variation of excitation frequency has quite a little effect on both stiffness and damping coefficients. Both direct stiffness and damping coefficients in the direction of bearing load decrease by the increase of shaft speed, but increase with the bearing load.

  • A dual-time stepping algorithm combined with a parallelized multigrid DADI method is presented to predict the dynamic damping coefficients. The Basic Finner model is chosen to validate the prediction capability of the present unsteady Euler method. The linearity of the pitch- and roll-damping coefficients is shown in the low angular rates and the interesting large drop and stiff increment in transonic region for roll-damping coefficients are explained in detail. Through the analysis for the pressure distributions at Mach number 1.0 to 1.2, the sudden drop results from the normal shock and the stiff increment of roll-damping reflects the transition of the normal shock to the oblique shock. The results also show that the Euler equations can give the damping coefficients with a comparable accuracy.

  • This paper raises issues in testing the absorption coefficients of sound-absorptive samples using the standing wave apparatus according to the Korean standard of KS F 2814. The standard code does not consider any effect of air-damping which is significant in testing relatively low sound-absorptive samples. This limitation has been shown to yield much variation of sound absorption coefficients for recent samples tests whose coefficients are less than 10%. An improved method of calculating the sound absorption coefficients is proposed in this work and its effectiveness in real test is also illustrated. Finally, the guideline for the modification of our national standard code KS F 2814 is proposed.

  • In this paper the linearzed stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad thrust bearing are calculated by the perturbation method. The coefficients are obtained for a wide range of pivot positions. The effects of exciting frequency and pad mass on stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated. Critical frequencies due to the tilting motions of the pad are presented and are shown to be strongly influenced by the pivot position and pad mass.

  • Most of outdoor mobile robots have a suspension on each wheel in order to relieve the shock by ground obstacles and to improve the driving stability. Typically, in the actual operations, the suspensions have been used under a given set of conditions as all the damping and spring coefficients of the suspensions are fixed. However, it is necessary to readjust the coefficients of the suspensions according to surface conditions that may cause the unstable shaking of a robot body at high speed driving. Therefore, this paper is focused on the mobility analysis of an outdoor robot when the coefficients of suspensions (in particular, damping coefficients) are changed while driving on an uneven road surface. In this paper, a semi-active suspension with twelve damping coefficient levels was used and a small sized vehicle with the suspensions was employed to analyze the mobility dependent on a change of the damping coefficient. And the mobility was evaluated through driving experiments on a bumped slope.

  • In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental study on the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors, oscillating near the silicon substrates. In this theoretical study, we develop theoretical models and test structures for the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors, fabricated by the surface-micromaching process. From the electrostatic test of the fabricated devices, frequency-dependent rotationalvelocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using devices, frequency-dependent rotational velocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer system. Experimental damping coefficients have been extracted from the least square fit of the measured rotational velocity within the filter bandwidth of 150 kHz. We have compared the theoretical values and the experimental results on the dynamic performance of the micromirrors. The theoretical analysis overstimates the resonant frequency in the amount of 15%, while underestimating the viscous damping in the factors of 10%.
