Ships in bad weather conditions are likely to be subjected to accidental loads, such as high bending moment, collision, and grounding. Once she has damage to her hull, her ultimate strength will be reduced. This paper discusses an investigation of the effect of collision damage on the ultimate strength of a ship structure by performing a series of collapse tests. For the experiment, five box-girder models with stiffeners were prepared with a cross section of $720mm\;{\times}\;720mm$ and a length of 900mm. Of the five, one had no damage and four had an ellipse shaped damage area that represented the shape of the bulbous bow of a colliding ship. The amount of damage size was different between models. Among the damaged models, the damage in three of them was made by cutting the plate and stiffener, and in one by pressing to represent collision damage. Experiments were carried out under a pure bending load and the applied load and displacements were recorded. The ultimate strength was reduced as the damage size increased, as expected. The one with the largest amount of damage had damage to 30% of the depth, and its ultimate strength was reduced by 19% compared to the undamaged one. The pressed one has higher ultimate strength than those that were cut. This might be due to the fact that the plate around the pressed damage area contributes to the ultimate strength, whereas the cut one has no plate to contribute.

Lightweight parts with very uniform precision are manufactured by an indent method and the press technique has been improved. Upon assembly with an indent method, a deformation force due to the compressive force occurs between the pin and hole and the contact surface is affected by damage. Therefore, a 3 dimensional model was made using the CATIA program and the damage on the surface contacted with indent was estimated through the ANSYS program in this study. In the analysis result, the maximum load applied at the PCB plate was 21.3 N when the pin goes through the PCB plate. When PCB plate came out of the pin, the maximum load was 19.24 N. As the structural analysis result, the maximum equivalent stress of Pin 1 was 192.96MPa because the maximum stress occurs at Pin 1 among all parts of this study model. By examining the damage property of the contacted indent and applying this study result to the design of real indentation, the damage can be prevented and the durability can be estimated.
An accurate non-model-based method for delamination identification of laminated composite plates is proposed in this work. A weighted mode shape damage index is formulated using squared weighted difference between a measured mode shape of a composite plate with delamination and one from a polynomial that fits the measured mode shape of the composite plate with a proper order. Weighted mode shape damage indices associated with at least two measured mode shapes of the same mode are synthesized to formulate a synthetic mode shape damage index to exclude some false positive identification results due to measurement noise and error. An auxiliary mode shape damage index is proposed to further assist delamination identification, by which some false negative identification results can be excluded and edges of a delamination area can be accurately and completely identified. Both numerical and experimental examples are presented to investigate effectiveness of the proposed method, and it is shown that edges of a delamination area in composite plates can be accurately and completely identified when measured mode shapes are contaminated by measurement noise and error. In the experimental example, identification results of a composite plate with delamination from the proposed method are validated by its C-scan image.
The tension and compression buckling behaviour of a square plate with localized zones of damage and subjected to non-uniform loading is studied using a finite element analysis. The influence of parameters such as position of damage, extent of damage, size of damage and position of load on instability behaviour are discussed. The dynamic behaviour for certain load and damage parameters are also presented. It is observed that the presence of damage has a marked effect on the static buckling load and natural frequency of the plate.
A methodology to assess damage prediction accuracy as a function of model uncertainty in structures is presented. In the first part, a theory of approach is outlined. First, a damage detection algorithm to locate and size damage in structures using few modal responses of the structures is summarized. Next, methods to quantify model uncertainty and the damage detection accuracy are formulated. In the second part, a methodology to assess the effect of model uncertainty on the damage detection accuracy of real structures is designed. In the last part, the feasibility of the assessment methodology is demonstrated by using a plate-girder bridge for which only information on a single mode is available.

Low velocity impact test and compressive residual strength test after impact were performed by using Hercules AS4/3501-6[45/0/-45/90]$_{2s}$ laminated plate to investigate the low velocity impact damage behavior and the post-impact strength degradation on orthotropic composite laminate plate. Due to the lateral impact losd, the load path showed "" shape according to the laminate central deflection. Damage in a laminate occurs by inclined matrix crack at the damage initiation load stage and vertical matrix crack, occurs on the outer surface. Evaluating the compressive residual strength after the low velocty impact test, it could be found that there is a transient range where the compressive residual strength drop suddenly in the initial damage which is in the matrix crack range and the initial delamination area. is in the matrix crack range and the initial delamination area.

In this study, an FRF-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) is proposed for plate structures. The present SDIM is derived from the partial differential equation of motion of the damaged plate, in with damages we characterized by using a damage distribution function. The appealing features of the present SDIM include the followings. First, the modal data of the damaged structure are not required. Secondly, a sufficient number of information can be generated from the measured FRFs by simply varying excitation frequencies and response measurement points. The feasibility of the present SDIM is verified through some numerically simulated damage identification tests.
This study presents a method for level ice-structure interaction analysis to estimate the fatigue damage of arctic structures by applying plate theory to the behavior of level ice. The boundary element method (BEM), which incurs a lower computational cost than the finite element method (FEM), was introduced to solve the plate bending problem. The BEM formulation was performed by applying the BEM to plate theory. Finally, to check the validity of the proposed method, the BEM results and FEM results obtained using the ABAQUS commercial software were compared. The response results of the BEM analysis agreed well with those of the FEM analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, the BEM approach is considered to be very powerful in level ice-structure interaction analysis for estimating level ice-induced fatigue damage. Further work is being conducted to perform level ice fracture analysis based on the stress field calculated using the boundary element method.
In this study, a series of random field test and dynamic analysis in the time domain were carried out in order to find in the reason of fatigue damage of the main and the secondary members in the 3-span continuous steel plate girder railway bridge being under in service over 60 years. From the measured and the analyzed results, the stress distribution patterns were investigated for the members with fatigue damage. In addition, global and local numerical stress analysis was performed for the members damaged severely by corrosion, to estimate variation of the distribution by corrosion. Finally, a reasonable cut-off ratio in the steel plate railway bridge will be proposed by analyzing the equivalent stress ranges according the ratio.

In this paper, hybrid health monitoring techniques using acceleration-impedance features are newly proposed to detect two damage-type in steel plate-girder bridges, which are girder's stiffness-loss and support perturbation. The hybrid techniques mainly consists of three sequential phases: 1) to alarm the occurrence of damage in global manner, 2) to classify the alarmed damage into subsystems of the structure, and 3) to estimate the classified damage in detail using methods suitable for the subsystems. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the alarmed damage is classified into subsystems by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the final phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index method and root mean square deviation (RMSD) method. The feasibility of the proposed hybrid technique is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled steel plate-girder bridge model for which hybrid acceleration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios. Also, the effect of temperature on the accuracy of the impedance-based damage monitoring results are experimentally examined from combined scenarios of support damage cases and temperature changes.
