In this study, two types of fatigue tests were conducted. First, cyclic bending tests were performed using the micro-bending tester. A four-point bending test method was adopted, because it induces uniform stress fields within a loading span. Second, thermal fatigue tests were conducted using a pseudo power cycling machine which was newly developed for a realistic testing condition. The pseudo-power cycling method makes up for the weak points in a power cycling and a chamber cycling method. Two compositions of solder are tested in all test condition, one is lead-free solder (95.5Sn4.0Ag0.5Cu) and the other is eutectic lead-contained solder (63Sn37Pb). In the cyclic bending test, the solder that exhibits a good reliability can be reversed depending on the load conditions. The lead-contained solders have a longer fatigue life in the region where the applied load is high. On the contrary, the lead-free solder sustained more cyclic loads in the small load region. A similar trend was detected at the thermal cycling test. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model was constructed. A finite element analysis using ABAQUS was performed to extract the applied stress and strain in the solder joints. A constitutive model which includes both creep and plasticity was employed. Thermal fatigue was occurred due to the creep. And plastic deformation is main damage for bending failure. From the inelastic energy dissipation per cycle versus fatigue life curve, it can be found that the bending fatigue life is longer than the thermal fatigue life.
In deep mining, the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar appears to be a new characteristic. In order to study the lateral deformation of coal-mass, a monitoring method and monitoring instrument were designed to investigate the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar in Tangkou Coalmine with the mining depth of over 1000 m. Because of without influence of repeated mining, the bedding sandstone roof is easy to break and the angle between maximum horizontal stress and the roadway is small, the maximum lateral deformation is only about 287 mm lower than the other pillars in the same coalmine. In deep mining, the energy accumulation and release cause a discontinuous damage in the heterogeneous coal-mass, and the lateral deformation of coal pillar shows discontinuity, step and mutation characters. These coal-masses not only show a higher plasticity but also the high brittleness at the same time, and its burst tendency is more obvious. According to the monitoring results and theoretical calculations, the yield zone of the coal pillar width is determined as 15.6 m. The monitoring results presented through this study are of great significance to the stability analysis and design of coal pillar.
Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are well known for improved fatigue strength, better impact resistance, superior damage tolerance and slow crack growth rate compared to traditional metallic materials. However, defects and loss of strength of a composite material can occur due to the vertical load from the punch during the joining with a dissimilar material using a conventional clinching method. In the current study, tapered-hole clinching was an alternative process used to join Al 5052 and FMLs. The tapered hole was formed in the FML before the joining. For the better understanding of static and dynamic characteristics, a clinched joining followed by a tensile-shear test was numerically simulated using the finite element analysis. The design parameters were also evaluated for the geometry of the tapered hole by the Taguchi method in order to improve and compare the lateral joining strength of the clinched joint. The influence of the neck thickness and the undercut were evaluated and the contribution of each design parameter was determined. Then, actual experiments for the joining and tensile-shear test were conducted to verify the results of the numerical simulations. In conclusion, the appropriate combination of the design parameters can improve the joining strength and the cross-sections of the tapered-hole clinched joint formed in the actual experiments were in good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations.

As thermosonic ball bonding is developed for more and more advanced applications in the electronic packaging industry, the control of process stresses induced on the integrated circuits becomes more important. If Cu bonding wire is used instead of Au wire, larger ultrasonic levels are common during bonding. For advanced microchips the use of Cu based wire is risky because the ultrasonic stresses can cause chip damage. This risk needs to be managed by e.g. the use of ultrasound during the impact stage of the ball on the pad ("pre-bleed") as it can reduce the strain hardening effect, which leads to a softer deformed ball that can be bonded with less ultrasound. To find the best profiles of ultrasound during impact, a numerical model is reported for ultrasonic bonding with capillary dynamics combined with a geometrical model describing ball deformation based on volume conservation and stress balance. This leads to an efficient procedure of ball bond modelling bypassing plasticity and contact pairs. The ultrasonic force and average stress at the bond zone are extracted from the numerical experiments for a $50{\mu}m$ diameter free air ball deformed by a capillary with a hole diameter of $35{\mu}m$ at the tip, a chamfer diameter of $51{\mu}m$, a chamfer angle of $90^{\circ}$, and a face angle of $1^{\circ}$. An upper limit of the ultrasonic amplitude during impact is derived below which the ultrasonic shear stress at the interface is not higher than 120 MPa, which can be recommended for low stress bonding.
Tunnels have been an integral part of human civilization. Due to complexity in its design and structure, the stability of underground structures under extreme loading conditions has utmost importance. Increased terrorism and geo-political conflicts have forced the engineers and researchers to study the response of underground structures, especially tunnels under blast loading. The present study has been carried out to seek the response of tunnel structures under blast load using the finite element technique. The tunnel has been considered in quartzite rock of northern India. The Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model has been adopted for the elastoplastic behaviour of rock. The rock model surrounding the tunnel has dimensions of 30 m x 30 m x 35 m. Both unlined and lined (concrete) tunnel has been studied. Concrete Damage Plasticity model has been considered for the concrete lining. Four different parameters (i.e., tunnel diameter, liners thickness, overburden depth and mass of explosive) have been varied to observe the behaviour under different condition. To carry out blast analysis, Coupled-Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) modelling has been adopted for modelling of TNT (Trinitrotoluene) and enclosed air. JWL (Jones-Wilkins-Lee) model has been considered for TNT explosive modelling. The paper concludes that deformations in lined tunnels follow a logarithmic pattern while in unlined tunnels an exponential pattern has been observed. The stability of the tunnel has increased with an increase in overburden depth in both lined and unlined tunnels. Furthermore, the tunnel lining thickness also has a significant effect on the stability of the tunnel, but in smaller diameter tunnel, the increase in tunnel lining thickness has not much significance. The deformations in the rock tunnel have been decreased with an increase in the diameter of the tunnel.

The fatigue crack growth model is derived and the retardation model is proposed. The fatigue crack growth model considers the residual plastic stretch on the crack surface which results from the plastic deformation at the tip of fatigue crack. The fatigue crack growth rate is calculated by using the cumulative fatigue damage and plastic strain energy in the material elements at the crack tip. This model gives the crack growth rate in reasonable agreement with test data for aluminum alloy AL6061-T651 and 17-4PH casting steel. The fatigue crack growth retardation model is based on the residual plastic stretch produced from a tensile overload which reduced the plastic strain range of the following load cycles. A strip-yield model of a crack tip plasticity is used for the calculation of a plastic zone size. The proposed retardation model characterized the observed features and delayed retardation of the fatigue crack growth under tensile overload.
The effects of crude saponin (SAP) and alkaloid (ALK) fractions of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer on the detrimental effects of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) and scopolamine on passive avoidance response (PAR) were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, referring their effects on the neuronal injury and plasticity of hippocampus in response to electrolytic lesion of left entorhinal cortex (ECL). The detrimental ECS effect on PAR was attenuated by pre- and post-treatments with SAP and ALK, respectively, or by pretreatment with aminoguanidine (AG), an inhibitor of diamine oxidase and NO synthase. And the detrimental scopolamine effect on PAR was also inhibited by pre-treatment with ALK or AG, and by post- treatment with SAP or ALK, respectively. On the 7th day after ECL, the brain sections stained by cresyl violet and by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry, respectively, showed the chromatolysis and numeral decrease of neurons and the reduction of AChE reactivity in the hippocampus CA1 area and to a lesser extent, in the dentate gyrus. The neuronal cell death of the CA1 area was significantly reduced by SAP, ALK, or AG, and the reduction of AChE reactivity was significantly attenuated by SAP or ALK and to a lesser extent by AG. These results suggests that the protective effect of ginseng SAP and ALK fractions on ECS- or scopolamine-induced impairment of PAR may be ascribed in part to preservation of hippocampal neurons, particularly cholinergic neurons.

This paper evaluated the optimum Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) using a circular concrete bridge pier subjected to dynamic loading. A three-dimensional finite element model was simulated using finite element program, ABAQUS. Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) option and plastic properties of the materials were incorporated to model the non-linearity of the structure. The analyses parameters were changed in length-to-height ratio and width-to-span ratio where columns were subjected to dynamic loading. Numerical analysis was conducted, and the seismic performance of the structures were evaluated by analyzing the ductility behavior of the structure. Results showed that the use of CFRP enhances the structural performance of column and revealed that the increase in length-to-height ratio plays vital role of improving the performance of the structure than the change in width-to-span ratio.

304L stainless steel sheets are used as a primary barrier for the insulation of membrane-type liquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier cargo containment system. 304L stainless steel is a transformation-induced-plasticity(TRIP) steel that exhibits complex material behavior, because it undergoes phase transformation during plastic deformation. Since the TRIP behavior is very important mechanical characteristics in a low-temperature environment, significant amounts of data are available in the literature. In the present study, a uniaxial tensile test for 304L stainless steel was performed to investigate nonlinear mechanical characteristics. In addition, a viscoplastic model and damage model is proposed to predict material fractures under arbitrary loads. The verification was conducted not only by a material-based comparative study involving experimental investigations, but also by a structural application to the LNG membrane of a Mark-III-type cargo containment system.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is produced using high amount of cementitious materials, very low water/cementitious materials ratio, fine-sized fillers, and steel fibers. Due to the dense microstructure of UHPC, it possesses very high strength, elasticity, and durability. Besides that, the UHPC exhibits high ductility and fracture toughness due to presence of fibers in its matrix. While the high ductility of UHPC allows it to undergo high strain/deflection before failure, the high fracture toughness of UHPC greatly enhances its capacity to absorb impact energy without allowing the formation of severe cracking or penetration by the impactor. These advantages with UHPC make it a suitable material for construction of the structural members subjected to special loading conditions. In this research work, the UHPC mixtures having three different dosages of steel fibers (2%, 4% and 6% by weight corresponding to 0.67%, 1.33% and 2% by volume) were characterized in terms of their mechanical properties including facture toughness, before using these concrete mixtures for casting the slab specimens, which were tested under high-energy impact loading with the help of a drop-weight impact test setup. The effect of fiber content on the impact energy absorption capacity and central deflection of the slab specimens were investigated and the equations correlating fiber content with the energy absorption capacity and central deflection were obtained with high degrees of fit. Finite element modeling (FEM) was performed to simulate the behavior of the slabs under impact loading. The FEM results were found to be in good agreement with their corresponding experimentally generated results.
