In order to analyze the water storage of the Daecheong dam after constructing the Yongdam dam situated in upstream, a daily cascaded simulation model for analyzing water storages in the Yongdam-Daecheong dams was developed. Operation scenarios of the Yongdam dam were selected to 8 cases with the combinations of downstream outflows and water supplies to the Jeonju region. Daily water storages in the Daecheong dam was analyzed daily by simulating from 1983 to 2004. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,964.2Mm^3$ on a yearly average in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,858.7\~1,927.3Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3$ is, and were analyzed to amount $1,994.9\~2,017.8Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s $. These values are compared to $1,649Mm^3$ applied in design. Secondly, reservoir use rate which was defined rate of water supply to effective water storage reached $241.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $228.3\~236.8\% In case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $245.1\~247.9\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Thirdly, runoff rate which is defined rate of dam inflow to areal rainfall reached $57.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $62.0\~68.4\% in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $64.1\~68.5\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Fourth, in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$ is from the Yongdam dam, appropriate water supply amounts to the Jeonju region were analyzed to only $0.50Mm^3/day$ from the daily simulation of water storages in the Yongdam dam. Comprehensively, water supply capacity of the Daecheong dam was analyzed to affect in small amounts in spite of the construction of the Yonsdam dam. It is effected to achieve the effective water management of the Yongdam dam and the Daecheong dam by using the developed cascaded model.

Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.

As the Jamsu-bridge and the floodplains of the Han River can be flooded during the rainy season, the exact prediction of the peak flood time is very important for mitigation of flood hazard. This study analyzes the effect of outflow of Paldang Dam and tide of Yellow Sea on the Han River. A target area is from the Paldang dam to Jeonryu gauging station. Water level of Jeonryu as a downstream boundary condition was estimated through multi linear regression analysis with outflow of Paldang dam and tide level of Incheon, because it was influenced by both a tide of Yellow Sea and outflow of Paldang dam. In this study, Water Level Rising Travel Time of the Jamsu-bridge and some floodplains in the Han River are estimated. Also, The second order polynomial expressions for relationships of outflow of Paldang Dam and Water Level Rising Travel Time were developed considering the outflow of Paldang dam and tide of Yellow Sea.
Water quality in the Daecheong reservoir has been deteriorated by algal bloom due to nutrient supply from the upstream of the Daecheong reservoir after heavy rainfall. Algal bloom is propagated from eutrophicated tributary into the main body of the reservoir according to the hydrological conditions. This study is aimed to estimate the water current and temperature effect by the simulation of dam spill flow control using water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 in 2003. Water current was resulted in nutrient transport from upstream of main reservoir and nutrients were delivered up to downstream by fast water velocity. Algal blooms occurred in stagnate zone of reservoir downstream as the current of downstream was retarded according to dam outflow control. Consequently water balance in stagnate zone triggered a rise of water temperature in summer. It affected algal bloom in the embayment of the reservoir. The simulation result by outflow control scenarios showed that spill flow augmentation induced in water body instability of stagnate zone so that water temperature declined. It could be suggested that outflow control minimize algal bloom in the downstream in the flooding season as long as water elevation level is maintained properly.

The mathematical analysis of the outflow hydrograph resulting from earth dam-break was studied. DBFW(Dam Break Flood Wave) model based on the breach mechanism and reservoir storage equation was developed and was applied to the Teton and Buffalo-Creek dam. The modeling results showed that the shape of outflow hydrograph, peak discharge and failure duration time had a good agreement with the data analyzed by NWS. The breach mechanisms which exert influence on the outflow hydrograph were consisted of geomorphological characteristics of the reservoir, breach mode, breach width and failure duration time. The earth dams in Korea were classified into four types by the reservoir geomorphology, and water surface elevation-failure duration time-peak discharge relationships were also presented. The methodological procedure made in this paper will provide a basic contribution to dam-break study in river system.
Recently, due to the effect of global warming and extreme rainfall, the magnitude of flood disaster and the frequency of flood is rapidly increasing. In order to mitigate the damage of human and property from this kind of meteorological phenomenon and manage water resources scientifically, effective operation of dam and reservoir is very important. In case of Andong dam which was not performed a flood control function needs to develop new types of dam safety management measure because of recent extraordinary flood by typhoons. In case of Andong dam and Imha dam, I am using HEC-5 model in order to apply reservoir simulation. In this case, complex conditions among 100-year floods , 200-year floods and PMF was used. Also, I modified the maximum outflow 3,800m3/s into 3,490m3/s and applied this modified discharge in order to secure freeboard in the downstream. In an analysis that I applied modified outflow by 100-year floods and 200-year floods to, the result showed that river didn't overflow in Andong area but some other places have relatively low freeboard. In the cases that I modified maximum outflow, results showed that freeboard of levee is larger than existed simulation. In the simulation that I applied 200-year floods and PMF to and under a condition connected with PMF, results showed overflowing the levees. Because of the difference between the frequency of dam outflow and the design flood in river, it is required to improve the existed flood plan in the downstream of Andong dam. As a result of this study, the optimal operation of reservoir systems can be proposed to mitigate the flood damage in the downstream of Andong dam and also can be used to establish the flood plans.

Lately multipurpose dam is required to consider various interests such as quality, ecological environment as well as flood control, water supply, hydropower generation, etc. The objective of this study is to investigation and analysis of water temperature in the areas where there are social conflicts due to cold water outflow. In this study, we monitored water temperature of Juam regulation dam, downstream river, Suncheon bay in a long term period and performed comparative analysis on a change of water temperature in downstream river and Suncheon bay by using three-dimensional numerical mode (EFDC) considering various external factors such as water outflow amount. The result of monitoring and numerical modelling indicates that effects of cold water outflow takes place from april to september. Also effects of the low temperature discharge of dam was complicatedly altered by various factors such as outflow time and amount, weather and tide level conditions etc. The result of this study can be utilized as a basic data for establishing improvement of dam operation plan to minimize negative effects of dam's cold temperature water outflow to downstream river and coastal area.
This paper evaluated the water resources aspect of the operating results of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam for the last 21 years. The elements that were evaluated included the amount of water supply from the dam. volume of outflow from the regulating dam, changes in the runoff volume at the dam site and downstream, and variations in the water supply capacity of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam and the Geum River Barrage Dam situated in the estuary. The rainfall-runoff model was used to evaluate the changes in the runoff volume, and the water balance analysis system was used to evaluate the variations in the dams'water supply capacities. The volume of domestic and industrial water supply from the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam increased to 6.1 times for the last 21 years from 61${\times}$$10^6$$m^3$ in 1981 to 375${\times}$$10^6$$m^3$in 2001. The rate of outflow to inflow of the Daecheong Dam was analyzed 1.30 times in dry season, 1.12 times in semi-dry season, and 0.90 times in rainy season. The volume of inflow to the Geum River Barrage Dam down- stream after the dam's construction increased to 1.25 times in dry season and 1.02 times in semi-dry season and decreased to 0.94 times in rainy season. The water supply capacity of the estuary barrage dam almost did not change in cases with or without the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam, but storages were largely affected by the outflows of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam.

Multi-purpose dams are operated accounting for both physical and socioeconomic factors. This study aims to evaluate the utility of a deep learning algorithm-based model for three multi-purpose dam operation (Seomjin River dam, Juam dam, and Juam Control dam) in Seomjin River. In this study, the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) algorithm is applied to predict hourly water level of the dam reservoirs over 2002-2021. The hyper-parameters are optimized by the Bayesian optimization algorithm to enhance the prediction skill of the GRU model. The GRU models are set by the following cases: single dam input - single dam output (S-S), multi-dam input - single dam output (M-S), and multi-dam input - multi-dam output (M-M). Results show that the S-S cases with the local dam information have the highest accuracy above 0.8 of NSE. Results from the M-S and M-M model cases confirm that upstream dam information can bring important information for downstream dam operation prediction. The S-S models are simulated with altered outflows (-40% to +40%) to generate the simulated water level of the dam reservoir as alternative dam operational scenarios. The alternative S-S model simulations show physically inconsistent results, indicating that our deep learning algorithm-based model is not explainable for multi-purpose dam operation patterns. To better understand this limitation, we further analyze the relationship between observed water level and outflow of each dam. Results show that complexity in outflow-water level relationship causes the limited predictability of the GRU algorithm-based model. This study highlights the importance of socioeconomic factors from hidden multi-purpose dam operation processes on not only physical processes-based modeling but also aritificial intelligence modeling.

Control of dam gates is a complex, nonlinear, and non-stationary control process and is significantly affected by hydrological conditions which are not predictable beforehand. In this paper, we proposed control methods based on a fuzzy inference method for the operation of dam gates. The proposed methods are not only suitable for controlling gates but also able to maintain target water level in order to prepare a draught, and able to control the amount of the outfow from a reservoir in order to prevent floods in lower areas of a river. In the proposed methods, we used the dynamic fuzzy inference method that membership functions can be varied by changing environment conditions for keeping up the target water level instead of conventional static fuzzy inference methods, and used additional fuzzy rules and membership functions for restricting the amount of the outflow. Simulation results demonstrated that the proposed methods produce an efficient solution for both of maintaining target water level defined beforehand and controlling the amount of the outflow.
