Purpose: The purposes of this study was to identify the health status, health-related life habits, activities of daily living and biophysical index of the elderly in Korea and Japan respectively, and to compare the Korean elderly with those of the Japanese elderly. Method: Two hundred ninety five elderly from Korea and 325 elderly from Japan, aged over 65 years were conveniently recruited from welfare centers in both countries. Health status, health-related life habits, and activities of daily living were assessed by self-report questionnaires. BMI, lean body mass, body fat, body fat rate, muscle area of limbs and grip strength were measured for biophysical indices. Descriptive statistics, non paired t-test and Chi-square test were used to describe and to compare the levels of these variables. Results: The mean scores on frequencies of Korean and Japanese elders' chronic diseases were 2.9 and 0.8. The mean scores on activities of daily living were 9.8 and 12.4 respectively. The Korean elderly had higher mean scores of BMI, and body fat rate than The Japanese elderly, and showed lower mean scores of muscle areas of the lower extremities and grip strength. Hypertension was the most prevalent disease in the both groups. Conclusion: Significant differences in several variables of health status, health-related life habits, activities of daily living and biophysical index were noted between the Korean and Japanese elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influences of hospital employees' daily life posture habits and work-related factors upon musculoskeletal subjective symptoms. Methods: This study was a descriptive survey study. Data were collected using structured a self-report questionnaire between April 1 and May 31, 2015. One hundred and ninety two employees were recruited in three hospitals. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, and binomial logistic regression. Results: The habit of leaning on one side and the habit of bending the back in an improper posture are key postures based on lifestyle affecting musculoskeletal subjective symptoms in neck, shoulders, arms, waist, and legs. Labours accompanying repeated arm movements for a long time are key work-related risk factors affecting musculoskeletal subjective symptoms in arms. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that, to prevent musculoskeletal diseases, it is necessary to identify and mediate personal factors like daily life posture habits as well as work-related risk factors. They may be utilized as basic materials for education of musculoskeletal health promotion and development of life guidance programs.
This study was conducted to compare the dietary characteristics of middle-aged people with different obesity index or food habits. Questionnaires were collected from 480 subjects in Daejon. The data were analyzed by $X^2$-test and ANOVA. The subjects were distributed into the normal weight group(66.3%), overweight group(18.3%) and underweight(15.4%) based on BMI. Twenty-five percent of males and 23.0% of females in the 50's belonged to the overweight group. The least consumed food was milk or milk products among the five basic food groups. The frequency of exercise was low in their daily life. The had better food habits than the males. The overweight group had worse food habits than the normal weight or underweight group. The underweight group ate light meal and ate slowly. The better the subjects had, the more regularly they took breakfast(p<0.001). The good food habits group were more interested in their dietary life and were more careful in selecting foods for their health than the bad food habits group(p<0.001). Based on the results of this study, the practical education programs should be focused on more intake of milk or products and on daily exercise for the self-health maintenance of middle-aged people. Also, proper education programs should be developed for males and females in their 50's to practice weight control and regularity of meals in their life, and to utilize nutrition knowledge in dietary life. Further research on the comparision of dietary characteristics are needed with consideration of the subjects ratio according to BMI.
This study surveyed 266 housewives residing in a Gyeonggi-provincial area for their dietary attitudes, dietary habits, nutrition knowledge, and application of nutrition information to daily life according to whether they use nutrition labeling. The survey on the dietary attitudes of the subjects showed that the points of "think that nutrition affects health", "quite interested in nutrition and health information", "like developing and trying new diverse recipes", and "persistently try new foods" were higher among those who check out nutrition labeling (Check group, n=112) than those who do not check out nutrition labeling (No check group, n=154). Reason for snacking, the Check group reported higher in the reasons of "for taking nutrients" but lower in the reasons of "do not eat enough meal" and "impulsively" than the No check group (p<0.01). Asked about why they check the nutrition labeling, the Check group answered "to compare products with each other" and "to purchase healthy food" whereas the No check group said "to decide whether the food is safe or not" and "to reduce body weight" (p<0.01). The Check group showed more recognition on the significance of the nutrition labeling and application to their actual daily lives than the No check group. Therefore, our results suggest that proper use of nutrition labeling is expected to improve dietary attitudes and dietary habits as well as enhance the application of nutrition information to actual daily life and promote health not only for the housewives but also for their family members as well.
This study attempted to solve daily inconveniences and propose a direction for healthy skin care after investigating eating habits, preferred food and shower frequency and analyzing the relationship between these living habits and perceived skin dryness among adult men in their 30-40s who are suffering from pruritus due to dry skin. Most respondents revealed a high level of inconvenience in their daily lives because of dry skin. According to analysis of the correlation between these life habits and skin dryness, they had an effect on skin dryness in most categories of eating habits, preferred food and shower frequency. In particular, as the amount of smoking or preference for sweet food increased, skin dryness became more serious. Therefore, it appears it would be important to control the intake of preferred food and have healthy eating habits in that eating habits and smoking are correlated with skin health, and skin health is an indicator of physical health.
This study examines the dietary, exercise, and other daily habits of Daegu residents and how these relate to the residents' perception of their own health status, and comparatively analyzes the lifestyles and daily habits of those who perceive themselves to be healthy and those who do not. This research study used Inbody 230(Body composition analysis, Biospace, Korea) to make body and health measurements such as body composition and obesity index. Also, included in this study was a survey on the lifestyle patterns of the residents. The data from this survey was analyzed with SPSS. The results show that among the residents of Daegu, those who perceive themselves to be healthy have lower body fat and are less obese on average. With respect to dietary habits, those who believe themselves to be healthy have more regular dietary habits such as rarely skipping a meal than those who do not believe themselves to be healthy. In addition those who say they are healthy exercise more frequently and for a longer duration than those who say they are not healthy. As for daily habits, those who report they are healthy show greater satisfaction with life and suffer less from stress than those who report themselves to be unhealthy. This study demonstrates that in order to improve people's health in Korea, good dietary, exercise and daily habits need to be emphasized. Additionally, health education and health awareness programs need to be established in each region. Follow-up studies should be conducted afterwards.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of children's dietary quality, dietary habits, food behavior and health-related lifestyles according to the mother's lifestyles of health and sustainability (LOHAS). The subjects were 580 children. Mother's LOHAS attitude index was 66.85 points and 100 points was a perfect score. The mother's high LOHAS attitude items that children perceived were "My mother often communicates with the family"(3.99 points) and "My mother thinks that the family's health is more important than her health"(3.93 points). In contrast, the LOHAS attitude items for "My mother does community service activity on weekends"(2.78 points), and "My mother participates in environmental protection service activity for the local community"(2.78 points) were very low. The high LOHAS behavior index of mothers was "resource saving", whereas "social welfare" scored low. When self-perceived health status and monthly income of children was high, the mother's LOHAS score was high. The LOHAS attitude index of mothers had a meaningful impact on the children's dietary quality, dietary habits, food behavior and health-related lifestyles. The most frequent food behavior variables were "high skipping rate", "frequency of snacks is 2~4 times per week", "speed of eating is rapid", and 'meals' amount is sufficient. The highest daily life habits item was "I try to maintain a pleasant and enjoyable life style"(3.42 points). The highest nutrient intake attitude score was "I tend to eat rice everyday."(3.41 points). They were highly recognized with "moderate physical activity", "high exercise preference", "positive posture exercise", "exercise <2 days per week", and "over 30 minutes exercise time per day" for the exercise performance status items. It was verified that the higher mother's LOHAS lifestyle score is, the higher children's food behavior, daily life habits, nutrient intake, exercise performance state score are.
The principal objective of this study was to identify the dietary and physical activity patterns of obese preschoolers, and to determine the association between child obesity and mother's' dietary habits or thoughts regarding dieting/weight. This is a cross-sectional, community based study, and 305 preschoolers who attended kindergarten in Seoul and its surrounding area were selected. The measurements of dietary habits both in preschoolers and their mothers, physical activities of preschoolers, and daily servings of foods were based on parents' self report. Weight and height were used to calculate WLI (weight length index) in preschoolers and BMI (body mass index) in their mothers. The subjects were divided into two groups 245 normal weight preschoolers (including underweight 15.1% and normal weight 65.6%) and 59 obese subjects (overweight 14.4% and obese 4.9%). With regard to dietary habits in normal and obese preschoolers, we noted significant differences in 5 questions, such as mostly eating heavy meals, one serving size, eating speed, overeating, and obsession about eating. No differences in daily servings of major foods and snacks, except fruits and potatoes, were noted between normal and obese children. Among 13 questions regarding mothers' dietary habits, only 3 questions-"preferred to instant foods", "finish meals within 15 minutes", "use nutritional information for selecting foods" were significantly different between normal and obese subjects. The total scores of mothers' dietary habits was significantly and negatively correlated with number of mother's dieting experiences or mother's BMI, but was not correlated with preschooler's obesity.
