An experimental investigation is presented to study the effect nozzle spacing, jet to plate spacing and Reynolds number on the local heat transfer to normally upward impinging submerged circular water jets on a flat heated surface. Nozzle arrays are a single jet(nozzle dia. = 8 mm), a row of 3 jets(nozzle dia. = 4.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 37.5 mm) and a row of 5 jets(nozzle dia. = 3.6 mm, nozzle spacing = 25 mm), and jet to plate spacing ranging from 16∼80 mm(H/D = 2∼10) is tested. Reynolds number based on single jet exit condition is varied 30000∼70000($V_o$ = 3∼7 m/s). Except for the condition of H/D = 10, the average Nusselt number of multi-jet is higher than that of single jet. For H/D = 2, average Nusselt number is increased by 50.3∼82.5% for a row of 3 jets and by 52.9∼65.2% on a row of 5 jets when compared to the average Nusselt number on the single jet.

The hydrodynamic interaction forces and moments induced by the vicinity of bank on a passing vessel are known as wall effects. In this paper, the characteristics of interaction acting on a passing vessel in the proximity of a semi-circle bank wall are described and illustrated, and the effects of ship velocity, water depth and the lateral distance between vessel and semi-circle bank wall are discussed. For spacing between ship and semi-circle bank wall (SP) less than about 0.2 L and depth to ship's draft ratio (h/d) less than around 2.0, the ship-bank interaction effects increase steeply as h/d decreases. However, for spacing between ship and semi-circle bank wall (SP) more than about 0.3 L, the ship-bank interaction effects increase slowly as h/d decreases, regardless of the water depth. Also, for spacing between ship and semi-circle bank wall (SP) less than about 0.2 L, the hydrodynamic interaction effects acting on large vessel increase largely as ship velocity increases. In the meantime, for spacing between ship and semi-circle bank wall ($S_P$) more than 0.3 L, the interaction effects increase slowly as ship velocity increases.
We present a broad-bandwidth comb-spacing-swept source (CSWS) based on a differential polarization delay line (DPDL) for interferometric three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The comb spacing of the CSWS is repeatedly swept by the tunable DPDL in the multiwavelength source to provide depth-scanning optical coherence tomography (OCT). As the polarization differential delay of the DPDL is tuned from 5 to 15 ps, the comb spacing along the wavelength continuously varies from 1.6 to 0.53 nm, respectively. The wavelength range of various semiconductor optical amplifiers and the cavity feedback ratio of the tunable fiber coupler are experimentally selected to obtain optimal conditions for a broader 3-dB bandwidth of the multiwavelength spectrum and thus provide a higher axial resolution of $35{\mu}m$ in interferometric OCT imaging. The proposed CSWS-OCT has a simple imaging interferometer configuration without reference-path scanning and a simple imaging process without the complex Fourier transform. 3D surface images of a via-hole structure on a printed circuit board and the top surface of a coin were acquired.
This paper is mainly concerned with the ship-bank interaction by model test. The experiments for the characteristics of hydrodynamic interaction forces and moments between vessel and bank with a mound were carried out in the seakeeping and maneuvering basin. A series of tests were carried out with ship model in parallel course along a vertical sidewall with a mound with varying lateral spacing between model ship and sidewall, length of sidewall and water depth. From the experimental results, it indicated that the hydrodynamic interaction effects increase as length of sidewall with a mound increases. Furthermore, for lateral spacing less than about 0.2L between vessel and bank, it can be concluded that the bank effects increase largely as the lateral spacing between vessel and bank decreases. However, for spacing between vessel and bank more than about 0.3L, the interaction effects increase slowly as lateral spacing decreases. Also, for the water depth to draft ratio(h/d) less than about 1.5, the hydrodynamic interaction effects increase dramatically as h/d decreases.
This study is to analyze speed variation at merging section of successive entrance ramp and to suggest design criterion of ramp spacing at successive entrance ramp in urban area. The major findings are as follows ; (1) The relationship between the speed at merging section of successive entrance ramp and the distance from the merging point represents concave curve. (2) The 85 percentile speed(S) at outside lane (lane 1) is modeled S = 49.5 + 355.7(D/Q) - 0.94(D2/Q) + 6.78(D/AL2) where, D = Distance from merging point(m), Q = Lane 1 volume(vph) AL2 = Acceleration length at second entrance ramp(m) (3) The more traffic volume and the shorter acceleration length of the second entrance ramp, longer ramp terminal spacing is needed.
Thermoacoustic power generation by a spiral heater in the Rijke tube was analyzed numerically. In the analysis, variables were normalized by the angular frequency of the sound and the thermal diffusivity of the air. The effect of the heater wire diameter d, the spacing between wires P-d, and the air-current velocity $U_0$, upon the power generation was obtained and discussed. When the spacing is broad enough, the normalized velocity is $U_0{\approx}0.8$ and the diameter is $d{\approx}4$ for the maximum power generation. With decrease of the spacing, however, the power generation increases more than 5 times and becomes maximum around $d{\approx}2$, $P-d{\approx}3$. And the velocity $U_0{\approx}0.8$ for the maximum power generation is almost independent of the wire spacing.

Stepped earth slopes incorporated with anti-slide piles are widely utilized in landslide disaster preventions. Explicit consideration of the three-dimensional (3D) effect in the slope design warrants producing more realistic solutions. A 3D limit analysis of the stability of pile stabilized stepped slopes is performed in light of the kinematic limit analysis theorem. The influences of seismic excitation and surcharge load are both considered from a kinematic perspective. The upper bound solution to the factor of safety is optimized and compared with published solutions, demonstrating the capability and applicability of the proposed method. Comparative studies are performed with respect to the roles of 3D effect, pile location, pile spacing, seismic and surcharge loads in the safety assessments of stepped slopes. The results demonstrate that the stability of pile reinforced stepped slopes differ with that of single stage slopes dramatically. The optimum pile location lies in the upper portion of the slope around Lx/L = 0.9, but may also lies in the shoulder of the bench. The pile reinforcement reaches 10% universally for a looser pile spacing Dc/dp = 5.0, and approaches 70% when the pile spacing reaches Dc/dp = 2.0.

The present work investigates the behavior of the embankment models resting on soft soil reinforced with ordinary and stone columns encased with geogrid. Model tests were performed with different spacing distances between stone columns and two lengths to diameter ratios (L/d) of the stone columns, in addition to different embankment heights. A total number of 42 model tests were carried out on a soil with undrianed shear strength $${\sim_\sim}10kPa$$. The models consist of stone columns embankment at s/d equal to 2.5, 3 and 4 with L/d ratio equal 5 and 8. Three embankment heights; 200 mm, 250 mm and 300 mm were tested for both tests of ordinary (OSC) and geogrid encased stone columns (ESC). Three earth pressure cells were used to measure directly the vertical effective stress on column at the top of the middle stone column under the center line of embankment and on the edge stone column for all models while the third cell was placed at the base of embankment between two columns to measure the vertical effective stress in soft soil directly. The performance of stone columns embankments relies upon the ability of the granular embankment material to arch over the 'gaps' between the stone columns spacing. The results showed that the ratio of the embankment height to the clear spacing between columns (h/s-d) is a key parameter. It is found that (h/s-d)<1.2 and 1.4 for OSC and ESC, respectively; (h is the embankment height, s is the spacing between columns and d is the diameter of stone columns), no effect of arching is pronounced, the settlement at the surface of the embankment is very large, and the stress acting on the subsoil is virtually unmodified from the nominal overburden stress. When $(h/s-d){\geq}2.2$ for OSC and ESC respectively, full arching will occur and minimum stress on subsoil between stone columns will act, so the range of critical embankment height will be 1.2 (h/sd) to 2.2 (h/s-d) for both OSC and ESC models.
This paper is presented for showing the effect of cooling rate on dendrite arm spacing, correlated with the chilling power of molding materials (conventional plaster, foamed plaster, silica sand) and section thickness, and also showing relationship between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties for an aluminum - 8.6 percent silicon - 3.6 percent copper alloy. Local solidification time $(t_f)$ and secondary dendrite arm spacing (d) could be varied widely in accordance with the molding materials and casting thickness, and the following relationship is obtained: $d=9.4t_f\;^{0.31}$ A good correlation between dendrite arm spacing and mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness was found, that is, mechanical properties decreased in a linear manner with increase in log of secondary dendrite arm spacing. Ultimate tensile strength in conventional plaster mold casting decreased by 15 percent comparing with the sand casting, where as in foamed plaster mold casting, it decreased by 30 percent comparing with the sand casting. From those results, it has been verified that DAS might be the most representative parameter for predicting mechanical properties varing with the different cooling condition.
In this study, the effect of the tensile strength and ratio of disc spacing to penetration depth on the efficiency of tunnel boring machine (TBM) is investigated using Particle flow code (PFC) in two dimensions. Models with dimensions of $150{\times}70mm$ made of rocks with four different tensile strength values of 5 MPa, 10 MPa, 15 MPa and 20 MPa were separately analyzed and two "U" shape cutters with width of 10 mm were penetrated into the rock model by velocity rate of 0.1 mm/s. The spacing between cutters was also varied in this study. Failure patterns for 5 different penetration depths of 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, and 7 mm were registered. Totally 100 indentation test were performed to study the optimal tool-rock interaction. An equation relating mechanical rock properties with geometric characteristics for the optimal TBM performance is proposed. The results of numerical simulations show that the effective rock-cutting condition corresponding to the minimum specific energy can be estimated by an optimized disc spacing to penetration depth, which, in fact, is found to be proportional to the rock's tensile strength.
