  • Based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and sampled fiber Bragg gratings, polarization-controlled waveband switching in multiwavelength fiber laser is successfully demonstrated at room temperature by using high polarization selectivity of a polarization beam splitter. A multiwavelength-switching operation between eight and six laser lines with signal to noise ratio over 35 dB and wavelength spacing of ${\sim}0.8nm$ has been successfully demonstrated. The switching displacement of the proposed laser was ${\sim}7.1nm$. The intensity unevenness between different laser lines was measured to be less than 6.5 dB. The switching displacement between wavebands (groups of contiguous wavelengths), wavelength channels, and their spacings can be flexibly designed by the selected comb filters.

  • The pressure-time profile of the explosion gases can be controlled fot the use of cartridge explosives with two techniques Known as Decoupling and Spacing the charges. Decoupling consists in leaving and empty space between the explosive column and wall of the blast hole. Four different decoupling index, 1.4, 1.8, 2.34, 3.0 are selected in this field study. The level of ground vibrations with each decoupling index are measured and the empirical particle vibrations with each decoupling index are measured and the empirical particle velocity equation from these data was obtained. The condition of new cracks at blast hole are also examined. As the decoupling index in increased, the level of the blast vibration is decreased,. But the cracks in rock masses are efficiently formed to remove the broken rock. The vibration constant associated with a given site $K=1564.5(D.I)^{-1.3233}$ in terms of D.I(decopling index).

  • The effects of surface relaxation on surface and interface magnetism in Fe/Cr (001) are investigated using the highly precise all-electron total-energy full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The Fe-Cr interlayer spacing is deter-mined by total-energy calculation and it is found to be relaxed downward by 18%. For the relaxed system, the magnetic moment of surface Fe is highly suppressed to be $1.72\mu_B$compared to the unrelaxed case ($2.39\mu_B$). This reduction of magnetic moment is considered as a result of the enhanced hybridization between Fe-d and Cr-d states, which can be seen from the calculated density of states. This work suggests the importance of effect of relaxation to the surface and interface magnetism in Fe/Cr system.

  • For the mechanical stability assessment of a deep underground high-level waste repository. computer simulations using FLAC3D were carried out and important parameters including stress ratio, depth, tunnel size, joint spacing, and joint properties were chosen from sensitivity analysis. The main effect as well as the interaction effect between the important parameters could be investigated effectively using fractional factorial design . In order to analyze the stability of the disposal tunnel and deposition hole in a discontinuous rock mass, different modelings were performed under different conditions using 3DEC and the influence of joint distribution and properties, rock properties and stress ratio could be determined. From the three dimensional modelings, it was concluded that the conceptual repository design was mechanically stable even in a discontinuous rock mass.

  • In this paper, an observer-based adaptive controller is proposed to control the longitudinal motion of vehicles. The standard gradient method is used to estimate the vehicle parameters, mass, time constant, etc. The inter-vehicle spacing and its derivatives are estimated by using the sliding mode cascade observer introduced in this paper. It is shown that the proposed adaptive controller is uniformly ultimately bounded. It is also shown that the errors of the relative distance, the relative velocity and the relative acceleration asymptotically converge to zero. The simulation results are presented to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Design methods are presented for an X-band traveling-wave slot array realized on a rectangular waveguide. An array of 21 longitudinal slots is realized on the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide. The squint of the antenna main beam is adjusted using the element spacing and the waveguide broad wall dimension. The excitation of the array is controlled by the slot offset from the waveguide center line Multiple I-plane steps are placed around last slot elements so that the second-order beam due to tile reflected wave Is minimized A waveguide-to-coaxial adapter Is designed for feeding the array antenna from a coaxial system. Results of the design show an outstanding performance of the antenna 17.1 dB gain. 36"beam 1111, and -21 dB maximum sidelobe level.evel.

  • A robust adaptive technique for the longitudinal control of a platoon of automated vehicles is presented. A nonlinear model is used to represent the dynamics of each vehicle within the platoon. The external disturbances such as wind gust and a disturbance term due to engine transmission variations and so on are considered. The state observer is used to avoid direct measurement of the relative velocity or acceleration between the controlled and leading vehicles or the controlled vehicles's acceleration. The proposed controller guarantees to recover platoon stability in operation even if a speed dependent spacing policy is adopted, which incorporates a constant time headway in addition to the constant distance. It is shown that the proposed observer is exponentially stable, and the at the robust adaptive controller is stable. The simulation results demonstrate excellent tracking even in the presence of disturbances.

  • To test the applicability of resistivity survey methods for the archaeological prospection of a large-scale tumulus, a three-dimensional resistivity survey was conducted at the $3^{rd}$ tumulus at Bokam-ri, in Naju city, South Korea. Since accurate topographic relief of the tumulus and electrode locations are required to obtain a high resolution image of the subsurface, electrodes were installed after making grids by threads, which is commonly used in the archaeological investigation. In the data acquisition, data were measured using a 2 m electrode spacing with the line spacing of 1 m and each survey line was shifted 1 m to form an effective grid of 1 m ${\times}$ 1 m. Though the 3-D inversion of data, we could obtain the 3-D image of the tumulus, where we could identify the brilliant signature of buried tombs made of stones. The results were compared with the previous excavation results and we could convince that a 3-D resistivity imaging method is very useful to investigate a large-scale tumulus.

  • The maximum unit point resistance ($q_{max}$) of rock socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads was investigated by a numerical analysis. A 3D Finite Difference Method (FDM) analysis and a Distinct Element Method (DEM) analysis were performed with varying rock elastic modulus (E), discontinuity spacing ($S_j$), discontinuity dip angle ($i_j$), and pile diameter (D). Based on the results of obtained, it was found that the ultimate point resistance ($q_{max}$) increased as rock elastic modulus (E) and rock discontinuity spacing ($S_j$) increased. But, it was found that $q_{max}$ decreased as pile diameter (D) increased. As for the influence of the dip angle of rock discontinuity ($i_j$), it was shown that $q_{max}$ decreased up to 50% of maximum value within the range of $0^{\circ}$ < $i_j$ < $60^{\circ}$ due to the shear failure at rock discontinuities. Furthermore, it was found that if $20^{\circ}{\leq}i_j{\leq}40^{\circ}$, influence of $i_j$ should be taken into account because $q_{max}$ tended to approach a minimum value as $i_j$ approached a value near the friction angle of the discontinuity (${\phi}_j$).

  • The thermal performance in the channels with two-wall rectangular convergent/divergent cross-sectional areas along the axial distance was investigated experimentally. The ribbed rectangular convergent/divergent channels were manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) = 10 mm and the ratio of rib spacing (p) to height (e) = 10. Three different parallel angled ribs (a = $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$) were each placed on the channel's one sided wall only. The convergent channel of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=0.67$ and the divergent channel of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.49$ were considered. The ribbed divergent channel produced better thermal performance than the ribbed convergent channel in three different restrictions; identical flow rate, identical pumping power, and identical pressure loss.
