  • This paper presents an effective way of improving fuel consumption for a variable displacement engine. The improvement of fuel consumption can be accomplished by means of deactivating inlet and exhaust valves, reducing the number of effective cylinders of a four-cylinder gasoline engine that is mounted on a domestic compact automobile.

  • We construct new families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1 which contain open 𝔸1-cylinders, that is, Zariski open subsets of the form Z × 𝔸1, where Z is a quasiprojective variety. In particular, we show that every Mukai fourfold of genus 8 is cylindrical and there exists a family of cylindrical Gushel-Mukai fourfolds.

  • This study introduced a new steel-jacketing method to retrofit RC columns. It also estimated the performance of steel-jacketed concrete cylinders. Twelve concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying steel jacket thicknesses of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm. Lateral confining pressure was applied with three clamps and the performance of plain concrete cylinders was compared with that of steel-jacketed cylinders. Steel jacket proved to be effective in increasing the strength of the cylinder. Finally, Li's constitutive model was compared with that of the experimentalresults. However, Li's model showed incongruity in Region II, which indicates the region after the yield of steel jackets. Therefore, the modified value of n was used for the region and the model showed a good agreement.

  • The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167 D, 0.05D and 0.067 D with pitches of PPD=2D, 1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulence Intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of Re$_{D}$=7.8$\times$10$^3$~1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ . At Re$_{D}$=1.2$\times$10$^{5}$ , the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared that with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.der.

  • Flow characteristics and aerodynamic forces acting on an elliptic cylinder placed in a plane boundary layer were investigated experimentally. Four cylinder models with axis ratio(major axis to minor axis, AR=A/B) of 1, 2, 3, and 4 having the same equivalent diameter were used in this experiment. The Reynolds number based on the equivalent diameter $D_e$(=20mm) was 13,000. In the case of circular cylinder, regular vortex shedding occurs for the cylinder gaps larger than G/B=0.3 and is not almost related to the boundary layer thickness. But, for the elliptic cylinders, the vortex shedding frequency is increased with increasing the gap ratio (G/B) and the axis ratio (AR) of elliptic cylinders. The maximum drag coefficient acting on a circular cylinder is mainly affected by the boundary layer thickness. But, the elliptic cylinders(AR$\geq$2), except for the smaller gap G/B<0.2, show a nearly constant drag coefficient which is much smaller than that of a circular cylinder. The base pressure on the flat plate decreases with increasing the axis ratio(AR) of the elliptic cylinder. In the case of a circular cylinder, the base pressure has the minimum value at the gap ratio G/B=0.4, but it occurs at G/D=2 for elliptic cylinders. The mean velocity of the cylinder wake is quickly recovered at a small cylinder height ratio(H/$\delta$), but the turbulent intensity is rapidly recovered at a large cylinder height ratio(H/$\delta$). The effective wake region in the plane boundary layer is shrinkaged with increasing the axis ratio(AR) of elliptic cylinder. And the drag coefficient and streamwise turbulent intensity of the elliptic cylinder with AR=4 are less than half of those for the circular cylinder(AR=1).

  • In a low speed open-type wind tunnel, a group of parallel wakes downstream of two dimensional grid model consisting of several circular cylinders were experimentally investigated to study the response of the wake flows to the acoustic excitation, in hoping to promote the understanding of the underlying mechanism behind the gross flow change due to artificial excitation. In the unexcited wake flows, the development of the individual wakes behind cylinders was almost uniform for the ratio of the spacing to the cylinder diameter of s/d.geq.1.5. For smaller s/d, however, the jet streams issued through the gaps between the cylinders became biased in one side and the cylinders had wakes of different sizes. At s/d=1.25, the gap flow directions change in time, leading to unstable wake patterns. Further reduction in s/d made this unstable flip-flopping of the jets stable. The most effective excitation frequency was found to be in the Strouhal number range of St=0.5-0.6. This frequency was related to the vortex shedding. At s/d=1.75, the excitation frequency was 2 or 4 times the vortex shedding frequency. When the flow was excited at this frequency, the vortex sheddings were energized, and pairings between neighboring vortices were generated. Also, the merging process between individual wakes was accelerated. The unstable and unbalanced wake patterns at s/d=2.15 were made stable and balanced. The unstable and unbalanced wake patterns at s/d=2.15 were made stable and balanced. For smaller spacing of s/d .leq,1.0, the acoustic excitation became less effective in controlling the flow.

  • The interaction of incident monochromiatic waves with N bottom-mounted porous circular cylinders is investigated in the frame of three-dimensional linear potential theory. The fluid domain is divided into N+l regions i.e. a single exterior region and N interior regions, and the diffraction potential in each fluid region is expressed by an eigenfunction expansion method (Williams and Li,2000). The analytic results show that the porous structure reduces both the wave forces and the run-up wave around the cylinder. To verify the developed model, the systematic model test with a line array of porous cylinders is conducted at the wave tank (30m$\times$7m$\times$1.5m). The analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental results within measured frequency range. It is concluded that the breakwater constructed with an array of porous circular cylinders shows the performance of an effective wave barrier together with the seawater-exchange effect and is considered to have vast potentials for the use of seawater-exchanging breakwater in the future.

  • Most countries in the world are trying to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity and replace them with renewable energy technologies. In Korea, there are abundant ocean renewable energy sources that will play an important role in power generation in the future. This paper introduces a new tidal energy converter utilizing flow induced vibration (FIV), which can work efficiently, even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s. All tests were conducted at the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory at the University of Michigan to examine the effects of the damping ratio of the electric generators on the power outputs and power efficiencies. In these tests, two identical circular cylinders were used, and passive turbulence controllers were applied to the surface of the cylinders to enhance the FIV. The experimental results showed that by using the two cylinders in the FIV, the power output and efficiency reached up to 31 W and 36%, respectively. In particular, the results showed that the power efficiency was higher at the relatively low flow speed (4

  • With the assumption that the performance of a catalyst is guaranteed and that the performance of an SCR reactor is influenced by the uniformity of fluid flow into the catalyst, this study carried out a numerical analysis of flow uniformity, which is an important design factor in SCR reactors. CFD was used to grasp flow uniformity and flow characteristics inside the SCR reactor. As for the flow uniformity, analysis was carried out on the velocity and direction of the fluid flowing into the front of the first SCR reactor. Numerical analysis was carried out in terms of the area ratios of the mixing evaporator to the catalyst for 500 PS SCR, 1 : 1.9, 1 : 3.1, 1 : 4.5, and 1 : 7.0. The results showed that the larger the area ratio, the smaller the flow uniformity. On the basis of these results, the flow uniformity of the modified SCR reactor is 77%. A guidevane was installed to improve flow uniformity, and attempts were made to grasp the flow uniformity based on the shape of the guide vane. The shape of the guide vane was cylindrical, and numerical analysis was carried out for cases with two cylinders and three cylinders. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was found that while there was no great difference between 82.7% with two cylinders and 81.7% with three cylinders, the effects of the installation of the guide vane on the improvement of flow uniformity were indisputable.

  • For the seismic design and analysis of LMR(liquid metal reactor) being developed in Korea, it is necessary to develop the simple seismic analysis model including the fluid-structure interaction effects. In this paper, the theoretical backgrounds for the fluid added mass of the immersed concentric cylinders are investigated and the seismic analysis code using the Runge-Kutta algorithm, which can consider the fluid added mass matrix in system matrix, are developed to perform the time history seismic analysis. Form the coupled modal analysis and the seismic analysis for the simple immersed concentric cylinders, it is verified that the fluid added mass significantly affect the vibration characteristics and the seismic responses. Therefore the fluid coupled effects should be carefully considered in seismic response analysis of the immersed concentric cylinders.
