  • High performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted considerable attention as essential energy sources for high-technology electrical devices such as electrical vehicles, unmanned drones, uninterruptible power supply, and artificial intelligence robots because of their high energy density (150-250 Wh/kg), long lifetime (> 500 cycles), low toxicity, and low memory effects. Of the high-performance LIB components, cathode materials have a significant effect on the capacity, lifetime, energy density, power density, and operating conditions of high-performance LIBs. This is because cathode materials have limitations with respect to a lower specific capacity and cycling stability as compared to anode materials. In addition, cathode materials present difficulties when used with LIBs in electric vehicles because of their poor rate performance. Therefore, this study summarizes the structural and electrochemical properties of cathode materials for LIBs used in electric vehicles. In addition, we consider unique strategies to improve their structural and electrochemical properties.

  • Simple fabrication of a powdered Ge-reduced graphene oxide (Ge-rGO) composite via spray pyrolysis and reduction is introduced herein. Successful incorporation of the rGO nanosheets with Ge hindered the aggregation of Ge and conferred enhanced structural stability to the composite by alleviating the mechanical stress associated with drastic volume changes during repeated cycling. The Li-ion storage performance of Ge-rGO was compared with that of powdered Ge metal. The reversible discharge capacity of Ge-rGO at the $200^{th}$ cycle was $748mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ and Ge-rGO showed a capacity of $375mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ even at a high current density of $5.0A\;g^{-1}$. The excellent performance of Ge-rGO is attributed to the structural robustness, enhanced electrical conductivity, and formation of open channels between the rGO nanosheets, which facilitated electrolyte penetration for improved Li-ion diffusion.

  • Transition metal sulfide materials have emerged as a new anode material for Li secondary batteries owing to their high capacity and rate capability facilitated by fast Li-ion transport through the layered structure. Among these materials, niobium disulfide (NbS2) has attracted much attention with its high electrical conductivity and high theoretical capacity (683 mAh g-1). In this study, we propose a facile synthesis of FexNbS2/C composite via simple ball milling and heat treatment. The starting materials of FeS and Nb were reacted in the first milling step and transformed into an Fe-Nb-S composite. In the second milling step, activated carbon was incorporated and the sulfide was crystallized into FexNbS2 by heat treatment. The prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron spectroscopies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical test results reveal that the synthesized FexNbS2/C composite electrode demonstrates a high reversible capacity of more than 600 mAh g-1, stable cycling stability, and excellent rate performance for Li-ion battery anodes.

  • Ni-rich layered oxides cathode has recently gained attention as an advanced cathode material due to their applicable energy density. However, as the Ni component in the layered site is increased, the high reactivity of Ni4+ results in parasitic reaction associated with decomposing electrolyte, which leads to a rapid decreasing the lifespan of the cell. The electrolyte additive triallyl borate (TAB) improves interfacial stability, leading to a stable cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer on the LNCM83 cathode. A multi-functionalized TAB additive can produce a uniformly distributed CEI layer via electrochemical oxidation, which implies an increase in long-term cycling performance. After 100 cycles at elevated temperature, the cell tested by 0.75 TAB retained 88.3% of its retention ratio, whereas the cell performed by TAB-free electrolyte retained 64.1% of its retention. Once the TAB additive formed CEI layers on the LNCM83 cathode, it inhibited the decomposition of carbonate-based solvents species in addition to the dissolution of transition metal components from the cathode. The addition of TAB to LNCM83 cathode material is believed to be a promising way to increase the electrochemical performance.

  • Zinc-ion Batteries (ZIBs) are currently considered to be effective energy storage devices for wearable electronics because of their low cost and high safety. Indeed, ZIBs show high power density and safety compared with conventional lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and exhibit high energy density in comparison with supercapacitors (SCs). However, in spite of their advantages, further current collector development is needed to enhance the electrochemical performance of ZIBs. To design the optimized current collector for high performance ZIBs, a high quality graphene film is suggested here, with improved electrical conductivity by controlling the defects in the graphene film. The graphene film showed improved electrical conductivity and good electron transfer between the current collector and active material, which led to a high specific capacity of 346.3 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, a high-rate performance with 116.3 mAh g-1 at a current density of 2,000 mA g-1, and good cycling stability (68.0 % after 100 cycles at a current density of 1,000 mA g-1). The improved electrochemical performance is firmly because of the defects-controlled graphene film, leading to improved electrical conductivity and thus more efficient electron transfer between the current collector and active material.

  • In this study, we synthesized and characterized garnet-type Li7-xAlxLa3Zr2-(5/4)yNbyO12 (LALZN) solid electrolytes for all-solid-state battery applications. Our novel approach focused on enhancing ionic conductivity, which is crucial for battery efficiency. A systematic examination found that co-doping with Al and Nb significantly improved this conductivity. Al3+ and Nb5+ ions were incorporated at Li+ and Zr4+ sites, respectively. This doping resulted in LALZN electrolytes with optimized properties, most notably enhanced ionic conductivity. An optimized mixture with 0.25 mol each of Al and Nb dopants achieved a peak conductivity of 1.32 × 10-4 S cm-1. We fabricated symmetric cells using these electrolytes and observed excellent charge-discharge profiles and remarkable cycling longevity, demonstrating the potential for long-term application in battery systems. The garnet-type LALZN solid electrolytes, with their high ionic conductivity and stability, show great potential for enhancing the performance of all-solid-state batteries. This study not only advances the understanding of effective doping strategies but also underscores the practical applicability of the LALZN system in modern energy storage solutions.

  • Ni-rich cathode materials have been developed as the most promising candidates for next-generation cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high capacity and energy density. In particular, the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries could be enhanced by increasing the contents of nickel ion. However, there are still limitations, such as low structural stability, cation mixing, low capacity retention and poor rate capability. Herein, we have successfully developed the nanorod-type Ni-rich cathode materials by using co-precipitation method. Particularly, the nanorod-type primary particles of LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2 could facilitate the electron transfer because of their longitudinal morphology. Moreover, there were holes at the center of secondary particles, resulting in high permeability of the electrolyte. Lithium-ion batteries using the prepared nanorod-type LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2 achieved highly improved electrochemical performance with a superior rate capability during battery cycling.

  • Recently, Point-of-care (POC) testing microdevices enable to do the patient monitoring, drug screening, pathogen detection in the outside of hospital. Immunochromatographic strip (ICS) is one of the diagnostic technologies which are widely applied to POC detection. Relatively low cost, simplicity to use, easy interpretations of the diagnostic results and high stability under any circumstances are representative advantages of POC diagnosis. It would provide colorimetric results more conveniently, if the genetic analysis microsystem incorporates the ICS as a detector part. In this work, we develop a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) microfluidic device integrated with a ROSGENE strip for colorimetric influenza H1N1 virus detection. The integrated RT-PCR- ROSGENE device is consist of four functional units which are a pneumatic micropump for sample loading, 2 ${\mu}L$ volume RT-PCR chamber for target gene amplification, a resistance temperature detector (RTD) electrode for temperature control, and a ROSGENE strip for target gene detection. The device was fabricated by combining four layers: First wafer is for RTD microfabrication, the second wafer is for PCR chamber at the bottom and micropump channel on the top, the third is the monolithic PDMS, and the fourth is the manifold for micropump operation. The RT-PCR was performed with subtype specific forward and reverse primers which were labeled with Texas-red, serving as a fluorescent hapten. A biotin-dUTP was used to insert biotin moieties in the PCR amplicons, during the RT-PCR. The RT-PCR amplicons were loaded in the sample application area, and they were conjugated with Au NP-labeled hapten-antibody. The test band embedded with streptavidins captures the biotin labeled amplicons and we can see violet colorimetric signals if the target gene was amplified with the control line. The off-chip RT-PCR amplicons of the influenza H1N1 virus were analyzed with a ROSGENE strip in comparison with an agarose gel electrophoresis. The intensities of test line was proportional to the template quantity and the detection sensitivity of the strip was better than that of the agarose gel. The test band of the ROSGENE strip could be observed with only 10 copies of a RNA template by the naked eyes. For the on-chip RT-PCR-ROSGENE experiments, a RT-PCR cocktail was injected into the chamber from the inlet reservoir to the waste outlet by the micro-pump actuation. After filling without bubbles inside the chamber, a RT-PCR thermal cycling was executed for 2 hours with all the microvalves closed to isolate the PCR chamber. After thermal cycling, the RT-PCR product was delivered to the attached ROSGENE strip through the outlet reservoir. After dropping 40 ${\mu}L$ of an eluant buffer at the end of the strip, the violet test line was detected as a H1N1 virus indicator, while the negative experiment only revealed a control line and while the positive experiment a control and a test line was appeared.

  • In this report, we fabricate the porous graphene films through embossing process and vacuum filtration method and demonstrate their superior electrochemical properties as supercapacitor electrode materials. Insertion/removal of polystyrene nanoparticles between the graphene sheets allows to provide pore structures, leading to the effective prevention of restacking in graphene films. As-prepared porous graphene films have a large surface area, a bicontinuous porous structures, high electrical conductivity, and excellent mechanical integrity. The electrochemical properties of the porous graphene films as electrode materials of supercapacitor are investigated by using aqueous $H_2SO_4$ and ionic liquid solution under three-electrode system. The porous graphene films exhibit a high specific capacitance (284.5 F/g), which is two-fold higher than that of packing graphene films (138.9 F/g). In addition, the rate capability (98.7% retention) and long-term cycling stability (97.2%) for the porous graphene films are significantly enhanced, due to the facilitated ion mobility between the graphene layers.

  • We present on a threshold switching device based on AsGeTeSi material which is significantly improved by two $N_2$ processes: reactive $N_2$ during deposition, and $N_2$ plasma hardening. The introduction of N2 in the two-step processing enables a stackable and thermally stable device structure, is allowing integration of switch and memory devices for application in nano scale array circuits. Despite of its good threshold switching characteristics, AsTeGeSi-based switches have had key issues with reliability at a high temperature to apply resistive memory. This is usually due to a change in a Te concentration. However, our chalconitride switches(AsTeGeSiN) show high temperature stability as well as high current density over $1.1{\times}10^7A/cm^2$ at $30{\times}30(nm^2)$ celll. A cycling performance of the switch was over $10^8$ times. In addition, we demonstrated a memory cell consisted of 1 switch-1 resistor (1S-1R) stack structure using a TaOx resistance memory with the AsTeGeSiN select device.
