Experimental and numerical study of a proposed steel brace with a localized fuse

  • In this paper, a particular type of all-steel HSS brace members with a locally reduced cross-sectional area was experimentally and numerically investigated. The brace member was strengthened against local buckling with inner and outer boxes in the reduced area. Four single-span braced frames were tested under cyclic lateral loadings. Specimens included a simple steel frame with a conventional box-shaped brace and three other all-steel reduced section buckling-restrained braces. After conducting the experimental program, numerical models of the proposed brace were developed and verified with experimental results. Then the length of the proposed fuse was increased and its effect on the cyclic behavior of the brace was investigated numerically. Eventually, the brace was detailed with a fuse-to-brace length of 30%, as well as the cross-sectional area of the fuse-to-brace of 30%, and the cyclic behavior of the system was studied numerically. The study showed that the proposed brace is stable up to a 2% drift ratio, and the plastic cumulative deformation requirement of AISC (2016) is easily achieved. The proposed brace has sufficient ductility and stability and is lighter, as well as easier to be fabricated, compared to the conventional mortar-filled BRB and all-steel BRB.

  • 해상풍력 구조물은 파랑, 바람, 조류 등에 의한 반복수평하중에 장기적으로 노출되기 때문에 기초구조물 설계 시 이에 대한 고려가 필수적이다. 모노파일(monopile)은 일반적으로 육상에서 사용하는 말뚝에 비해 직경이 큰 중공형 강관으로 설계법이 잘 정립되어 있으며 시공이 비교적 단순하고, 안정적으로 풍력 구조물을 지지할 수 있는 장점이 있어 전 세계적으로 널리 활용되고 있다. 해상풍력 모노파일의 횡방향 정적하중에 대한 거동 평가는 American Petroleum Institute(API)에서 제안하는 p-y 곡선법을 활용하는데, 해상풍력과 같이 반복수평하중에 장기간 노출되는 경우 대구경 모노파일에 대한 p-y 곡선법의 적용성을 평가할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 서남해안 지역의 대표지반 중 하나인 느슨한 실트질 모래지반에서 양방향(two-way) 반복수평하중을 받는 모노파일의 거동을 원심모형실험을 통해 평가하였다. 그 결과, 모노파일의 거동은 반복하중 크기, 반복하중 횟수, 반복하중의 방향에 따라 달라지는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, API에서 제시하는 p-y 곡선법이 대구경 모노파일의 양방향 반복수평하중에 대한 거동을 과대평가하고 있음을 확인하였다.

지반의 동적특성에 기초한 액상화 평가법(I) : 이론제안 (A New Methodology for the Assessment of Liquefaction Potential Based on the Dynamic Characteristics of Soils (I) : A Proposal of Methodology)

  • 본 연구에서는 변형률 수준별 실내진동시험 및 지진응답해석의 수행을 기초로 하는 새로운 액상화 평가법을 제안하였다. 제안된 평 가법에서는 비 배수조건 하에서 진동전단하중으로 야기된 과잉간극수압의 누적으로 액상화가 발생하는 점을 고려하여 진동하중을 받는 포화지반의 액상화 거동을 실내진동시험결과의 전단응력-전단변형률 이력곡선을 토대로 산정한 교란도와 소성 전단변형률 상각궤도의 변화로 정의하였으며, 이를 실지진 시간이력의 지반 내 거동변화와 연계시킴으로써 지진이 보유한 연속성 및 불규칙성을 합리적으로 고려하도록 하였다. 또한, 제안된 평가법에서는 진동하중의 변화에 관계없이 액상화 발생시 포화사절토의 동적특성은 일정하다는 일련의 연구사례를 토대로 내친 해석시 이용되는 전변형률 수준의 동적물성 획득시험만으로도 액상화 평가가 가능하도록 하였으며 정현하중의 크기를 달리한 진동삼축시험에서 산정된 액상화 발생시의 소성 전단변형률 상각궤도를 비교함으로써 이에 대한 검증연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과, 진동정현하중의 크기에 관계없이 액상화 발생시 지반의 동적특성 치가 유일한 값을 나타내었다 그러므로, 제안된 평가법은 변형률 수준별 실내진동시험을 통해 지반의 동적물성 획득과 액낭화 평가 수행이 가능할 뿐만 아니라, 지진응답해석을 통해 불규칙한 실지진 시간이력 전부를 고려하는 특징으로 육상화 평가결과의 신뢰성을 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

반복단순전단시험에 기반한 조립토의 설계 액상화 저항 곡선 개발 (Cyclic Simple Shear Test Based Design Liquefaction Resistance Curve of Granular Soil)

  • 본 논문에서는 지진 시 작용하는 반복적 하중에 의하여 발생하는 잔류 과잉간극수압 예측에 필요한 반복저항응력비(CRR)와 재하횟수 N 간의 관계를 나타내는 액상화 저항 곡선을 반복단순전단시험과 문헌조사를 통하여 도출하였다. CRR과 N 자료는 두 가지 모델을 이용하여 최적 곡선을 계산하였으며 계측된 자료와 비교한 결과, 이중 한 가지 모델은 CRR이 다소 작게 산정되어 정확도가 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다. 다양한 액상화 저항 곡선을 살펴본 결과, 반복저항응력비(CRR)는 재하횟수 N = 15에서의 CRR($CRR_{N=15}$)로 정규화할 경우, 분산이 크게 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 이와 같은 정규화가 특별히 유용한 이유는 $CRR_{N=15}$은 실내시험이 아니라 현장시험으로부터 쉽게 산정 가능하기 때문이다. 정규화를 통하여 평균과 상한 및 하한 곡선을 도출하였으며, 각각에 상응하는 설계식과 변수 또한 제시하였다. 제안된 곡선은 추후 부지 고유의 지반응답해석과 항만 구조물의 안정성 평가 등에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Hysteresis modelling of reinforced concrete columns under pure cyclic torsional loading

  • It has been observed in the past that, the reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are very often subjected to torsional moment in addition to flexure and shear during seismic vibration. Ignoring torsion in the design can trigger unexpected shear failure of the columns (Farhey et al. 1993). Performance based seismic design is a popular design philosophy which calls for accurate prediction of the hysteresis behavior of structural elements to ensure safe and economical design under earthquake loading. However, very few investigations in the past focused on the development of analytical models to accurately predict the response of RC members under cyclic torsion. Previously developed hysteresis models are not readily applicable for torsional loading owing to significant pinching and stiffness degradation associated with torsion (Wang et al. 2014). The present study proposes an improved polygonal hysteresis model which can accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of RC circular and square columns under torsion. The primary curve is obtained from mechanics based softened truss model for torsion. The proposed model is validated with test data of two circular and two square columns. A good correlation is observed between the predicted and measured torque-twist behavior and dissipated energy.

다중선형회귀법을 활용한 예민화와 환경변수에 따른 AL-6XN강의 공식특성 예측 (Prediction of Pitting Corrosion Characteristics of AL-6XN Steel with Sensitization and Environmental Variables Using Multiple Linear Regression Method)

  • This study aimed to predict the pitting corrosion characteristics of AL-6XN super-austenitic steel using multiple linear regression. The variables used in the model are degree of sensitization, temperature, and pH. Experiments were designed and cyclic polarization curve tests were conducted accordingly. The data obtained from the cyclic polarization curve tests were used as training data for the multiple linear regression model. The significance of each factor in the response (critical pitting potential, repassivation potential) was analyzed. The multiple linear regression model was validated using experimental conditions that were not included in the training data. As a result, the degree of sensitization showed a greater effect than the other variables. Multiple linear regression showed poor performance for prediction of repassivation potential. On the other hand, the model showed a considerable degree of predictive performance for critical pitting potential. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.7745. The possibility for pitting potential prediction was confirmed using multiple linear regression.

Research on seismic performance of regionally confined concrete circular column with trapezoid stirrups

  • In order to investigate the seismic performance of regionally confined concrete circular column with trapezoid stirrups (TRCCC) under high axial compression ratio, the confinement mechanism of regionally confined concrete was analyzed. Three regionally confined concrete circular columns with trapezoid stirrups were designed, and low cyclic loading tests were conducted at three different axial compression ratios (0.9, 1.1, 1.25) to study the failure mode, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, deformation capacity, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens. The results indicate that the form of regional confinement concrete provides more uniform confinement to the normal confinement, and the confinement efficiency at the edges is 1.4 times that of normal confined concrete. The ductility coefficients of the specimens were all greater than 3 under high axial compression ratios, and the stiffness and horizontal bearing capacity increased with the increase of axial compression ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that the code of design specifications can appropriately relax the axial compression ratio limit for TRCCC. Finally, the spacing between stirrups of TRCCC was analyzed using ABAQUS software. The results showed that as the spacing between the stirrups decreased, the cracking load and peak load of TRCCC increased continuously, but the rate of increase decreases.

  • In this study, strain measurement and its applicability to estimated deflection curve using fiber bragg grating sensors was conducted. For this purpose, reinforced concrete beams were made and sensors were attached both on the surface of the beams and inside steel. Two types of sensors were used to detect strain on the beams and steel : fiber bragg grating sensors, electric resistance strain sensors. So fatigue test is done with measuring strain of specimen. In addition, this experiments estimates the optimum deflection curve that converts strain curve data measured by FBG sensors into deflection.

Space-Time Warp Curve for Synthesizing Multi-character Motions

  • This paper introduces a new motion-synthesis technique for animating multiple characters. At a high level, we introduce a hub-sub-control-point scheme that automatically generates many different spline curves from a user scribble. Then, each spline curve becomes a trajectory along which a 3D character moves. Based on the given curves, our algorithm synthesizes motions using a cyclic motion. In this process, space-time warp curves, which are time-warp curves, are embedded in the 3D environment to control the speed of the motions. Since the space-time warp curve represents a trajectory over the time domain, it enables us to verify whether the trajectory causes any collisions between characters by simply checking whether two space-time warp curves intersect. In addition, it is possible to edit space-time warp curves at run time to change the speed of the characters. We use several experiments to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can efficiently synthesize a group of character motions. Our method creates collision-avoiding trajectories ten times faster than those created manually.

Elucidation of Electrode Reaction of EuCl3 in LiCl-KCl Eutectic Melts through CV Curve Analysis

  • The electrode reaction of $Eu^{3+}$ in a LiCl-KCl eutectic melt has been re-examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV). In this work, for the first time, the kinetic details of a $Eu^{3+}/Eu^{2+}$ redox system have been completely elucidated, along with the thermodynamic property, through a curve fitting applied to experimental CV data, which were obtained in a wide scan rate range of 0.5 to 10 V/s. The simulated results showed an excellent fit to all experimental CV data simultaneously, even though the curve fittings were performed within a large dynamic range of initial transfer coefficient values, formal potentials, and standard rate constants. As a result, a proper formal potential, transfer coefficient, and standard rate constant for the $Eu^{3+}/Eu^{2+}$ redox system were successfully extracted using the CV curve fitting.
