  • Five novel cyanine dyes containing julolidine and indole moieties were synthesized. Several color compensating films for plasma display panels (PDP) were prepared using these dyes. The spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of the synthesized dyes in both solution and film state were evaluated. For each color compensating film, the optimum ratio of dye to binder was determined on the basis of transmittance, half band width, and photo-stability of the color compensating film. The five synthesized dyes showed sharp absorption peaks near 590 nm (orange light) and had molar extinction coefficients above $1{\times}10^5M^{-1}cm^{-1}$. The melting point of the dyes was above $200^{\circ}C$ and photo-stability of the color compensating films was improved by introducing substituents at the 5th position on the indole derivatives.

  • The effect of organic solvent in the dyeing of silk fiber by acid dye was investigated. Acetophenone and benzyl alcohol were shown to be the most effective for the rate of dyeing of silk fiber by Milling Cyanine 5R (C.I. Acid Blue 113), a milling type acid dye, but, with benzyl alcohol, the equilibrium dye uptake was much lower than that in the absence of it. In the presence of solvent, maximum dye uptake shifted to lower temperature than 6$0^{\circ}C$, while without solvent, it was shown at about $60^\circ{C}$. When dyed by Orange II (C.I. acid Orange 7) under same condition equilibrium dye uptake of silk fiber was lower than that for milling type acid dye, and in the presence of benzyl alcohol, still much lower uptake resulted. All these fact reveals that organic solvents in the solvent-assisted dyeing of silk fiber broaden micelle spacings too much, resulting in increased rate of dyeing, and decreased equilibrium dye uptake, contrary to wool.

  • The synthesis and absorption spectra of squarvlium(SQ) dyes and croconium(CR) dyes were .studied. Absorption spectra of SQ dye in various solvents exhibited a negative solvatochrornism. Thus, it was suggested that the structure of SQ dye may be a highly polar structure. The λ$_{max}$ of CR dyes undergoes a bathochromic shift of about 100nm compared with the corresponding SQ dyes. This shift can be calculated by the Pariser-Parr-Pople molecular orbital method. From the PPP MO calculation results, we found that SQ dye and CR dye have a almost same Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital(HOMO) level(SQ : -8.0eV, CR : -8.09eV). On the other hand, energy levels of Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital(LUMO) of SQ and CR dyes are -4.09eV and -4.13eV respectively. Thus, replacement of five membered ring by four membered ring in SQ dye causes a large bathochromic shift.t.

  • As inverstigating the influence of monomers and photoinitiator in the polymerization rate of photopolymerization by using IR spectroscopy, photopolymerizations initiated by ultraviolet radiation are characterized by the presence of an autoacceleration in the polymerization rate as the reaction proceeds. The conversion for the end of the autoacceleration varies considerably depending on the monomer and reaction condition which determines coil size and viscosity. In UV curable systems, the autoacceleration begins at only a few percent conversion and continues to 40% in HEA solution and 60% conversion in EHA solution. The polymerization ate in HEA solution increased as follow; DMHA > HCPK > DMPA and could be explained by the interaction between the initiating radical and HEA monomer and the size of the photodissociated radical of initiator. But the tendency of autoacceleration in EHA solution is almost independent on initiator.

  • In the prior study, wool gabardines were treated with alkaline proteases which were some kinds of enzyme to decompose protein, and their tensile strengths were determined, and the surface of the fibers were also observed using a scanning electron microscope. Enzylon ASN 30 and Alkalase 2.5L DX did not show much effect on the weight loss of wool, however, the weight loss of wool increased considerably with treating Esperase 8.0L. Pretreatment of wool with dichloloisocyanuric acid before protease-treatment increased the weight loss of wool to a great extent. In this study, the enzyme treated wools dyeing behaviors with acid dye, Milling Cyanine 5R, were mainly investigated. The protease-treatment remarkably increased not only the rate of dyeing but also the saturation dye uptake. From these results, it seemed likely that the structural relaxation of adhesive filler of interscale or intercellular cement facilitated the dye penetration into the fibers, at the same time, the change in the inner structure of the wool fibers by the protease made the fixation of the dyes more efficient.

  • Squarylium or squaraine dyes are derived from 1,2-dihydroxycyclobuten-3,4-dione, otherwise known as squaric acids. They are two principal types: the 1,2-bisdonorsubstituted derivatives, and the 1,3-bisdonorsubstituted derivatives. The former are essentially merocyanines and have no distinctive properties, whereas the latter represent a unique type of chromophore, which is neither a merocyanines nor cyanine and has exceptional light absorption characteristics. They also have many functional applications based on their special properties. Thus it was the objective of this research project to synthesize a range of 1,3-squarylium dyes of widely differing structural types, and to investigate their light absorption and fluorescence properties in general, and the color change properties of appropriate examples in particular. Also in this study, the various pHinduced colour change processes were examined.

  • In this research, we focused on the development of cy3 dye with high thermal stability and good solubility for LCD color filter. Cy3 dyes were prepared through the synthetic procedure of two steps. The synthesized cy3 dyes were characterized by using NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and TGA. These cy3 dyes showed maximum absorption wave length (${\lambda}_{max}$) in the range of 549~555 nm in UV/Vis spectrum. And we confirmed that solubility characteristics and thermal stability of cy3 dyes were dependent on the structure of counter cation. Cy3 dyes with methyl counter cation and ethyl counter cation have good solubility in organic solvents such as chloroform, ethanol, and PGME. Moreover, Cy3 dye with ethyl counter cation gave excellent thermal stability in TGA thermograms. And Cy3 dye with ethyl counter cation showed good result in photoresist film test.

  • The Aggregation State of thin vapor deposite Film made by Cyanine Dye were changed into Monomeric molecular state(M) and Dimeric Aggregation(D) at the acidic treatment, into reversible H-Aggregation (H) at alkalic gas or heat treatment. Photo-electric properties were higher H than D and M, this stats were effective in enhancing Photoelectric-conversion characteristic. Substitute group of Meso-Position being stronger electronic Donors, Electronic density is higher and Electric conductivity is enhanced, we confirmed Oscillator Strength calculated by PPP-Molecular Orbital Calculation and Absorption Spectra at solvent stats were agreed good.

  • In this research, we focused on the improvement of cy3 dye's characteristics for LCD color filter. Solubility and thermal stability are main characteristics of dyes for LCD color filter. We performed experiment to change counter cation of cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent for these purposes. These cy3 dyes (1b~5b) were prepared through the synthetic procedure of three steps. The synthesized new cy3 dyes were charaterized by using NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and TGA. These cy3 dyes showed purple color and maximum absorption wavelength (${\lambda}_{max}$) in the range of 578~590 nm in UV/Vis spectrum. We confirmed that solubility and thermal stability of cy3 dyes were dependent on the structure of counter cation. Cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent have good solubility in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, methanol, and acetone. Especially, Cy3 dye with 4-nitrobenzyl counter cation (5b) gave excellent solubility characteristics.

  • The effect of urea and its derivatives, which are known as structure breakers of water, in the dyeing of silk with acid dyes was investigated. Without ureas the maximum dye uptake was observed at $60^{\circ}C$ when dyed with Milling Cyanine 5R, but in the presence of ureas the maximum dye uptake was decreased and its temperature also shifted to lower regin in the order of urea >N-methyl urea > N,N-dimethyl urea>tetramethyl urea. These tendencies were more marked in the dyeing of silk fiber with Orange II, a typical levelling type acid dye. These can be interpreted as the decrease in the hydropholic interaction between fiber molecules which results in the broadening of the inter micelie spacing. The increased partition coefficient of dye molecules in the bath by the action of ureas also contributes to dyeing results, and it can be seen from the spectral characteristics of dyes in aqueous urea solution.
