Depression has a direct relationship with lower quality of life for elderly with cerebral vascular accidents(CVA). Daily hassles worsen depression for elderly with CVA disability and thus an effective intervention is necessary. This research examined the direct influence of daily hassles on depression and the mediation effect of family support among 161 elderly with CVA disability living in Seoul using Structural Equation Modeling. The direct effect of daily hassles on depression was statistically significant (p < .001) while family support was shown to be a mediator between daily hassles and depression. The mediation model of family support was examined using $x^2$ difference and Soble test. As a result, family support was proven to be a partial mediator. Implications are discussed.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of joint mobilization on forward head posture and to propose an effective method to improve correct body posture and balance. A total of eight patients from a Maitland-applied group (n=8) received mobilization therapy to increase the mobility of the cervical joint, with Maitland's movement grade III intensity for 30 seconds of treatment and 30 seconds of rest, for ten intervals, three times a week for four weeks. The craniovertebral angle (CVA) changes before and after the intervention with the Maitland technique were measured as $56.85{\pm}2.31^{\circ}$ before, $63.23{\pm}2.23^{\circ}$ two weeks after, and $64.98{\pm}1.27^{\circ}$ four weeks after joint intervention. There were significant CVA changes before and after the Maitland technique (P <.05). The results of this study suggest that the Maitland technique is useful for improving the head vertebral angle in patients with forward head posture.
Objective: The forward head posture (FHP) is strongly related to the rounded shoulder posture (RSP), which is associated with shoulder pain. Design: Observational cross sectional study design Methods: A total of 37 were enrolled in the study, 22 individuals with FHP(experimental group) and 15 healthy adults(control group). Correlation with differences between groups was analysed through craniovertebral angle (CVA) representing FHP for both groups, neck disability index (NDI) indicating neck pain, disability of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) indicating shoulder pain. Results: There was a significant difference in the results of CVA, NDI, and DASH in FHP and healthy adults (p<0.05). Significant correlations were found between DASH and CVA in FHP participants (r = -0.656, p = 0.001). Also, in the regression analysis results of DASH and CVA, the regression model was found to be suitable and the variation in DASH could be explained by 43% (F = 15.118, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Shoulder pain and neck discomfort are potentially related, and an increase in shoulder pain can increase FHP.
Background: The importance of postural stabilization and cervical mobilization in subjects with pain from the anterior head posture is drawing more attention. However, studies on head and neck stabilizing intervention after mobilization are lacking. Objective: To examine the effects of Kinesiotaping and posture setting exercise on forward head posture (FHP). Design: Crossover Study Design Methods: The subjects were 17 male and female college students in their 20s with FHP. They were randomized into the Kinesiology taping group (KTG) with 9 subjects and posture stabilizing exercise group (PSEG) with 8 subjects. The intervention was conducted for 4 weeks, and changes in pain, craniovertebral angle (CVA), and proprioception were observed before and after intervention. Results: Pain was significantly reduced in the KTG and PSEG both before and after intervention. CVA and proprioception were significantly increased only in the PSEG. The differences in CVA and proprioception between the two groups were significant. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the application of posture setting exercise could decrease pain, proprioceptive error and increase CVA on FHP.
This observation was made on 163 cases of CVA that were confirmed through survey. They were treated in the Bulgyo Oriental Hospital in Taegu from February to March 1998. The results was as follows, 1. The ration of male to female was 1:1:36 in whole groups. 2. Onset time was occurred $37.4\%$ at 06:00-12:00. $20.0\%$, 00:00-16:00. 3. Of 157 cases of cerebrovascular accidents cerebral infarction (included cerebral thrombosis & cerebral embolism) was presented in $47.4\%$, cerebral hemorrhage in $38.2\%$, subarachnoid hemorrhage in $5.1\%$, and others in $8.9\%$. 4. The most ordinary preceding disease was hypertension. 5. The family history was appeared as $12.9\%$ of the mother, $9.7\%$ of the father.(This observation was made on 155 cases) 6. The body weight of CAV patients was appeared $37.4\%$ in 51-60kg, $30.7\%$ in 61-70kg, $17.8\%$ in below 50kg, and $9.8\%$ in 71-80kg, $4.3\%$ in above 80kg. 7. Of 161 cases, $46.6\%$ did not exercise. 8. Of 163 cases, $65.6\%$ of them did not drink alcohol. 9. Of 162 cases, $63\%$ did not smoke cigarettes. 10. The food taste (food habit) of stroke patients was that they comprised a fancy as $38.0\%$ of salty food, $33.8\%$ of fresh food, and $24.7\%$ of hot food, $3.5\%$ of sweet food.(This observation was made on 143 cases) According to the above result, We must restrain salty food and control positively hypertension and in terms of CVA prevention.
This case study was reported to show the effects of Seongnoe-gaegyubeop acupuncture treatment. The methods were applied to patients who had the sequela of cerebral vescular accident(CVA) and had no progression for 3~6 months after the onset of CVA. The patients had no progression in spite of receiving medical treatment for 3~6 months after the onset of CVA. The patients were treated with Seongnoe-gaegyubeop acupuncture treatment. The patient's standing, sitting state and activities of daily life like dressing, feeding etc were assessed by Berg balance scale, Barthel Index and Manual Muscle Testing. After 3 months of this treatment, the standing, sitting state and activities of daily life were improved. I think that acupuncture treatment of Seongnoe-gaegyubeop is effective treatment method to treat the patient who caused the sequela of CVA.
This study was designed to investigate factors related to recovery from cerebrovascular accidents(CVA). Medical charts of 100 CVA patients(40 males and 60 females) who had been treated at Bul-Guang hospital in Teagu from June to December 1994 were reviewed to assess their recovery from CVA. Not only types of CVA, blood pressure and serum cholesterol and triglyceride were factors affecting recovery from CVA, but also smoking and drinking status and food preference seemed to be important factors. The percentages of recovered patients were higher in the order of cerebral thrombosis(83.3$\%$), subarachnoid hemorrhage(57.1$\%$), cerebral embolism(50.0$\%$), and cerebral hemorrhage(26.7$\%$). Recovery rates of patients with serum cholesterol below 200mg/dl, 200-239mg/dl, over 240mg/dl were 81.8$\%$, 66.6$\%$, and 16.6$\%$ respectively. Recovery rates of patients with serum triglyceride below 160mg/dl, 160-209mg/dl, and oover 210mg/dl were 84.6%, 72.8$\%$, and 35.7$\%$ respectively. Patients with standard weight recovered better than those with overweight or obesity. Recovery rates of underweight, standard weight, overweight and obesity patients were 73.3$\%$, 85.7$\%$, 45.8$\%$, and 31.6$\%$ respectively. Smoking and drinking seemed to be important factors which inhibited recovery from CVA. Patients preferring spiced foods were recovered better than those preferring salty or pungent foods.
Objectives This study was designed to investigate the correlation between the forward head posture and the spinal alignment. Methods We examined the whole spine x-rays of the 144 student sample. We measured the Craniovertebral angle (CVA), Cervical angle (CA), Thoracic kyphotic angle (TKA), lumbar lordosis angle (LLA) and Ferguson's angle (FA) of the students. We then analyzed the relationship between these angles. Results CVA had correlation with CA, but it was weak. There was significant correlation between CVA and TKA. There were no significant correlation among CVA, LLA and FA. Conclusions According to above results, there is a negative relationship between the CVA and the TKA - in that higher CVAs yielded lower TKAs. But CVA had no significant correlation with LLA or FA.
