Ultra precision diamond cutting is a very efficient manufacturing method for optical parts such as HOE, Fresnel lenses, diffraction lenses, and others. During micro cutting, the rake angle is likely to become negative because the tool edge radius is considerably large compared to the sub-micrometer-order depth of cut. Depending on the ratio of the tool edge radius to the depth of cut, different micro-cutting mechanism modes appear. Therefore, the tool edge sharpness is the most important factor affecting the qualities of machined parts. That is why diamond especially mono-crystal diamond, which has the sharpest edge among all other materials is widely used in micro-cutting. The question arises, given a diamond tool, what is the minimum (critical) depth of cut to get continuous chips while in the cutting process\ulcorner In this paper, the micro machinability around the critical depth of cut is investigated in micro grooving with a diamond tool, and introduce the minimizing method of cutting depth using vibration cutting. The experimental results show the characteristics of micro cutting in terms of cutting force ratio (Fx/Fy), chip shape, surface roughness, and surface hardeing around the critical depth of cut.
Recently the automization of wood manufacturing and the development of CNC machine tools becomes the center of interest. Cutting mechanism, tool wear and the roughness of machined surface have been studied. In the studies about wood for special uses, concrete data of cutting is desired. While Pinus densiflora is characterized that heartwood develops as age increases, Chunyang District has the characteristic of strength, red color, relatively regular chap and high heartwood - percentage. But there is no data about cutting this wood, Chunyang District. In this study face milling by sintered carbide tool was excuted to Chunyang District. Cutting force, Surface roughness and states were investigated with regard to cutting speed. Example results were as follows; 1) Mean cutting resistance against lateral component force and longitudinal component force decreased rapidly up to cutting speed of 155 m/min, and remains constant above this speed. 2) The surface roughness of cutting surface lowered as cutting speed increased, regardless of fiber formation. Radial rougness of fiber is larger than lineal surface roughness. 3) Increase in Cutting speed made machining mark restrained. Down-milling showed larger marks than up-milling.

In this study, the inclined endmilling process with a 3-axis machining center using inalined jigs is introduced for the purpose of reducing overall Dies/Molds machining time and improving the machining accuracies. In order to analyse the cutting mechanism of a given endmill more accurateky, the unification of the cutting mechanism model of 3-different-kind endmills is examined by using the mose radius as a parameter. By adding radial runouts as a parameter which influences on surface roughness, the superposition method which defines the effective cusp heigh superposing the cutter mark height and the conventional cusp height is modified. And 3-D surface topography predicted in this paper looks like the surface normally observed in practice. Through machining experiments, the adequacy of the superposition algorithm was confirmed.
Conventional injection molding system for producing extremely thin-wall parts such as Light Guide Plates(LGP's) for mobile displays is at the limit of its capability due to its tendency to develop frozen layers and the critical speed of injection. The molten polymer in the cavity freezes quickly as its heat is rapidly transferred to the mold base. Many attempts have been tried in the past to overcome this problem. The present study used the injection/compression molding technology to produce a thin-wall part, with enhanced features such as an automated mechanism for cutting gates. As a result, the total cycle time was reduced by almost 35 seconds, resulting in a productivity increase by 30%.

In metal cutting various types of chips are produced in consequence of cutting conditions. According to the type of chips the cutting mechanism is to be changed. Most of the cutting theory is based on the continuous chip because of its convenient analysis, but the occurrence of the saw-toothed chip depends upon the workpiece and/or the cutting conditions, one of which is titanium alloy used widely. Nowadays titanium alloys are used widely with the rapid development of aerospace structural engineering application, whereas the theory of cutting mechanism has not been established yet, and the formatting process has not been understood satisfactorily, either. Unfortunately several misconceptions, conflicting statements and statements needing further clarifi- cation are also found. In this paper an attempt is made to clarify the formation process of saw-toothed chips which are to be produced during the orthogonal cutting process of titanium alloys. They were machined at low speed to avoid the rapid tool wear. We observed the SEM-photographs of chips taken at the quick-st- opping device. It is hoped that a rational model of the mechanics of cyclic chip formation can be developed. The results obtained are as follows. 1. When a saw- toothed chip is formed, the shear band begins at the primary shear zone and trans- fers to the free surface, so that a segment is produced and it is completed by upsetting between the formatting segment and the formatted segment. 2. As the rake angle or the clearance angle increases in the machining of the titanium alloy, the chip approaches to that of the continous type. 3. When the rake angle and the clearance angle are increased the shear energy and the unit friction energy decrease, which shows the same aspect as that of the continuous chip.

This research describes that the cutting characteristics and tool wear behavior in the micro cutting of three kinds of wear resistant cemented carbides (WC-Co; V40, V50 and V60) using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) and PCBN (Poly crystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools by use of the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. The purpose of this research is to present reasonable cutting conditions from the viewpoint of high efficient cutting refer to a precise finished surface and tool wear. Summary of the results is as follows: (1) The cutting forces tend to increase as the increase of the weight percentage of WC particles, and the thrust forces was larger than the principal forces in the cutting of WC-Co. These phenomena were different from the ordinary cutting such as cutting of steel or cast iron. (2) The cutting speed hardly influenced the thrust force, because of the frictional force between the cutting tool edge and small WC particles at low cutting speed region such as 2$\mu\textrm{m}$/s. It seemed that the thrust cutting force occurred by the contact between the flank face and work material near the cutting edge. (3) The wear mechanism for PCD tools is abrasion by hard WC particles of the work materials, which leads diamond grain to be detached from the bond. (4) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the WC-Co, it seems that WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear, resulting in severe tool damage. (5) In the orthogonal micro cutting of WC-Co, the tool wear in the flank face was formed bigger than that in the rake face on orthogonal micro cutting. And the machining surface integrity on the side of the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was better than that with a positive one, as well as burr in the case of using the cutting tool with a negative rake angle was formed very little compared to the that with a positive one.

This paper presents new cutting force measuring system for milling process. Usually, tool dynamometer is the most appropriate measuring tool in an analysis of cutting mechanism. High price and limited space, however, make it difficult to be in-situ system for controllable milling process. Although an alternative using AC current of servomotor has been suggested, it is unsuitable for cutting force control because of low bandwidth and noise. We suggest new cutting force measuring system, using two load cell placed between moving table and nut of ballscrew, and modelled on the system statically and dynamically. And to verify the accuracy of the proposed system, a series of carefully conducted experiments were carried out. Experiment results show that models are in reasonably good agreement with the experiment data.

The high hardened materials that are remarkable in aspects of durability have been used for die and mold industry. As the high hardened materials are hard to machine, the high-speed machining is essential to manufacture these materials. Currently, in the general turning and milling, experiments to the tool wear monitoring have studied, but those have not applied in high-speed machining. In this study, the cutting mechanism was analysed by the cutting force according to cutting conditions, and the parameters to monitor the tool wear were selected from the tendency of the cutting force and acceleration according to cutting length in the high-speed machining of the high hardened materials(STD11).

In order to clarify the effects of nonmetallic inclusion contents insteels (SM45C & SCM440) on the tool life, cutting experiment was performed under various cutting conditions. Tool life, cutting force, roughness of machined surface and cutting mechanism are examined on these two kinds of steel. The following conclusions were obtained from the analysis (1) Cutting force of the steels was not affected by chemical component and nonmetallic inclusion. (2) If the rate of amount, Ca/S has a value grater than about 0.2 and addition of less amount of Al, Mn, tool wear of tips decreasesinturning. (3) It is also proved that higher contents of nonmetallic inclusion improve roughness of the surface. (4) Less amount of Ca, higher amount of S, Mn and Al improve the chip breakability.
