  • A method using cutting force signal and neural network for detection tool damage is proposed. Cutting force signal is gained by tool dynamometer and the signal is prepocessed to normalize. Cutting force signal is changed by tool state. When tool damage is occurred, cutting force signal goes up in comparison with that in normal state. However, the signal goes down in case of catastrophic fracture. These features are memorized in neural network through nomalizing couse. A new nomalizing method is introduced in this paper. Fist, cutting forces are sumed up except data smaller than threshold value, which is the cutting force during non-cutting action. After then, the average value is found by dividing by the number of data. With backpropagation training process, the neural network memorizes the feature difference of cutting force signal between with and without tool damage. As a result, the cutting force can be used in monitoring the condition of cutting tool and neural network can be used to classify the cutting force signal with and without tool damage.

  • In-process monitoring of cutting conditions and tool wear is important for improving productivity. This paper is concerned with on-line monitoring of tool wear and cutting force in end milling operation. The experimental study deals with the relations between flank wear and cutting force signal. Tool wear is detected by monitoring of cutting signal. A monitoring procedure is shown in this paper. The influence of flank wear on cutting signal activity was examined. The results are presented in the form of graphs. The analysis of the cutting signal and flank wear curves provides useful indicators of unacceptable wear development in the tool.

  • The detection of cutting tool states in machining is important for the automation. The information of cutting tool states in metal cutting process is uncertain. Hence a industry needs the system which can detect the cutting tool states in real time and control the feed motion. Cutting signal features must be sifted before the classification. In this paper the Fisher's linear discriminant function was applied to the pattern recognition of the cutting tool states successfully. Cutting conditions and cutting force para- meters have shown to be sensitive to tool states, so these cutting conditions and cutting force paramenters can be used as features for tool state detection.

  • A useful method to detect tool breakage suing neural network of cutting force signal is porposed and implemented in a basic cutting process. Cutting signal is gathered by tool dynamometer and normalized as a preprocessing. The cutting force signal level is continually monitored and compared with the predefined level. The neural network has been trained normalized sample data of the normal operation and cata-strophic tool failure using backpropagation learning process. The develop[ed system is verified to be very effective in real-time usage with minor modification in conventional cutting processes.

  • This work describes the modeling of cutting process for feedback control based on signal processing in end-milling. Here, cutting force is used to design control model by a variety of schemes which are moving average, ensemble average, peak value, root mean square and analog low-pass filtering. It is expected that each model offers its own peculiar advantage in following cutting force control.

  • On the analysis of cutting mechanics in orthogonal cutting, each cutting force component can be predicted. By adding the flank face wear term to the prediction equation for cutting force components, complete equations are obtained. Using these equations, it is shown that cutting force components are increased linearly as flank face wear land is developed, in theory and experiment. By making non-dimensional term ie. Fv/Fc, the width of variation of output signal Fv/Fc is greately decreased compared with each cutting force component as cutting condition is varied. Among these conditions, the variation of chip width in the range of more than 1mm and that of cutting velocity have little effect on the output signal Fv/Fc, that of Flank face werr land can be detected without difficulty.

  • Automatic monitoring the cutting state is one of the important problems to increase the reliability of modern machining processes. In this study, cutting force signals were used in order to monitor the tool wear and fracture in the turning process. Turning experiments were performed using cemented carbide insert tools(K20) and STS304 steel as a workpiece. Cutting force signal characteristics and histogram analysis method were used to recognize the cutting states. It was found that tool wear and fracture can be diagnosed from the cutting force signal coefficient of variation(C.V.) and histogram analysis.

  • This paper presents a new methodology for on-line tool breadage detection by sensor fusion of an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and a built-in force sensor. A built-in piezoelectric force sensor, instead of a tool dynamometer, was used to measure the cutting force without altering the machine tool dynamics. The sensor was inserted in the tool turret housing of an NC lathe. FEM analysis was carried out to locate the most sensitive position for the sensor. A burst of AE signal was used as a triggering signal to inspect the cutting force. A sighificant drop of cutting force was utilized to detect tool breakage. The algorithm was implemented on a DSP board for in-process tool breakage detection. Experiental works showed an excellent monitoring capability of the proposed tool breakage detection system.

  • In-process diagnosis of the cutting state is essential for the automation of manufacturing systems. Especially when the cutting process becomes unstable it induces self-exited vibrations a frequent case of poor tool life rough surface finish damage to the workpiece and the machine tool itself and excessive down time. To ensure that the cutting process main-tains stable it is highly desirable to have the capability of real-time. To ensure that the cutting process main-tains stable it is highly desirable to have the capability of real-time monitoring and controlling chatter. This paper describes the detection method of chatter vibration using cutting force in turning process. In order to detect a chatter vibra-tion the dynamic fluctuation of radial force is analyzed since this components is sensitive to the chatter. The envelope sig-nal of radial force has been calculated by the use of FIR Hilbert transformer and it was useful to classify the chatter signal from the dynamically unstable circumstances. It was found that the mode and the mode width were closely correlated with the chatter amplitude was well. Finally back propagation(BP) neural network have been applied to the pattern recognition for the classification of chatter signal in various cutting conditions. The validity of this systed was confirmed by the experiments under the various cutting conditions.

  • Recent noticeable advances of CNC machine tools have considerably improved productivity and precision in manufacturing processes. However, in the respect of productivity some defects still remain because selection of machining conditions entirely depends on the experiences of programmers. Usually, machining conditions such as feed rate and spindle speed have been selected conservatively by considering the worst cases, and it has brought the loss of machining efficiency. Thus, the improvement of cutting force controller has been done to regulate cutting force constantly and to maximize feedrate simultaneously in case that machining conditions change variously. In this study, sliding mode control with boundary layer is applied to milling process for cutting force regulation and in a commercial CNC machining center data transfer between PC and PMC (programmable machine controller) of CNC machine is done using a standard interface method. And in the cutting force measurement, an indirect cutting force measuring system using current signal of AC servo is adopted in order not to use high-priced equipment like tool dynamometer. The purpose of this study is to maximize the productivity in milling process, thus its results can be applied to cases such as rough cutting process.
