In this study, experiments were conducted with an ultra-precision machine, developed in domestic, to find the characteristics and the most suitable cutting conditions of ultra-precision machining. To maximize the performance of the machine, the machine was installed in a room that is protected from vibration and is maintained constant temperature and constant humidity. Selected work pieces are an aluminum-alloyed material, which has excellent corrosion resistance and has low deformation. The used tool is synthetic poly crystal diamond, which has excellent abrasion resistance and has low affinity. Four types of tool nose radius were used such as 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4mm. Machining is performed with cutting speed of 500, 800 and 1000m/min., feed rate of 0.005, 0.008, 0.010mm/rev. and cutting depth of 0.0005, 0.0025 and 0.005mm respectively which can generally be used in the field as a cutting condition. As a method of evaluation, surface roughness was measured for each cutting condition, and reciprocal characteristics are computed for each tool nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth. As a result, the most suitable cutting condition and characteristics of ultra-precision machining were identified which can usefully be applied in the industrial field.

In this paper, we have studied internal quality including chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetalic inclusion of test materials. We have analyzed dynamic characteristics of cutting force of milling including tensile strength value, hardness etc. Test materials are used in the tempered carbon steel and the non-tempered carbon steel. The obtained results are as follows: 1. In analyzing internal quality, the tempered carbon steel have typical martensite structure and the non-tempered carbon steel have ferrite + pearlite structure. 2. Yield strength, tensile strength and hardness value are in the non-tempered carbon steel but elongation is maximum value in the tempered carbon steel. 3. Cutting force is smaller non-tempered carbon steel than tempered carbon steel when feed speed and depth on cut is constant. 4. Cutting force is smaller non-tempered carbon steel than tempered carbon steel when cutting speed and depth of cut is constant.
Chip breaking is important in lathe work for maintaining good surface of the products and safety of operator. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of chip breaking and chip shape resulted from the carbide inserts with grooved type and obstruction type chip breaker. Experiments have been performed under the following cutting conditions, (1) constant cutting speed with variable depth of cut and feed rate, (2) constant depth of cut with variable cutting speed and feed rate. Also, the flying distance of chip and it's distribution have been investigated. As a results, good performance of chip breaking can be obtained for small radius of curvature and land width of grooved type chip breaker. And the thickness of chip increase with the increase of feed rate and decrease of cutting speed, and the chip breaking becomes easier with the increase of chip thickness due to the large deformation rate. Obstraction type chip breaker shows better performance of surface roughness than the grooved type. The flying distance of the chips over 90% are less than 1 meter, and the distance decreases as the feed rate decreases.
A laser glass cutting system using a femto-second laser was evaluated for Flat Panel Display (FPD) glass. A theoretical analysis of the ablation threshold and depth is described using an explicit analytic form. Experiments for clean and deep grooves were performed using a 3W femto-second laser, and the relationships between the input energy and the scribing depth as well as the threshold energy are presented. Mechanical breaking after the scribing process was carried out and the results are compared with a theoretical method. It was found that a two-sided LCD panel glass can be cut clearly using the laser cutting method. The methodology was found to be very effective as a mass-production cutting system.

This research intents to gain the sight for the qualitative characteristics of precision cutting by using the CNC lathe with a mono-crystal diamond(MCD) tool having a straight cutting edge. As an absolute value of tool setting angle becomes smaller, the surface roughness has improved. We knew that according to each of the machine tools and cutting edge radius, there exist a proper mininum feed and depth of engagement for improving the surface roughness. This results suggest that the proper values of feed and depth of engagement are about 11-15 .mu. m/rev, 10 .mu. m, respectively.

The orthogonal cutting method of the nodular graphite cast iron in the lathe turning, whose structure were formulated under two kinds of annealing conditions, has been experimentally studied and the results investigated. The various characteristics of machinabilities of the nodular cast iron, depending upon its structure, have been obtained from the results as follows. (1) As depth of cut increases, the shearing strain decreases and tend gradually to increase with increase of ferrite matrix. (2) As depth of cut increases, the shearing stress slightly decreases for P$_{1}$, but it tends to increase for both of P$_{2}$ and P$_{3}$ under the same condition. The annealing effect in the process of light cutting was found to be greater than heavy cutting. (3) The cutting energy slightly decreases with the increassing of the depth of cut, and the effect of decreasing the cutting energy by the annealing is higer the light cutting than the heavy cutting. (4) The cutting equations as follow. P$_{1}$ : 2.phi.+1.58(.betha.-alpha.)=92 deg. P$_{2}$ : 2.phi.+1.40(.betha.-alpha.)=84 deg. P$_{3}$ : 2.phi.+1.37(.betha.-alpha.)=82 deg. (5) The machining constants for P$_{1}$, P$_{2}$ and P$_{3}$ which are the test-pieces in this study and classified according to the containing quantity of ferrite matrix given respectively in 78deg., 70 deg., and 68 deg. From these it can be known that the machining constants slightly decreases with increasing of the quantity of ferrite matrix contained in the nodular graphite cast iron.

In metal cutting various types of chips are produced in consequence of cutting conditions. Flow-type chips have been studied in most cases because they are easier to be analyzed, but the actual surfaces of chips are not smooth, but crushed. This paper deals with saw-toothed chips, special types of flow-type chips, which have deep concaves and high convexes and sharp angles on the free surface. I tried to establish the theory of saw-toothed chip mechanism through experimental observation, that is, the mathmatical model of the cutting energy and cutting mechanism through the geometrical observation of the chips by using a microscope. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mechanism of saw-toothed chips is diffenent from that of general flow-chips. 2. In the case of saw-toothed chips, the shear angle must be measured by the hypotenuse angle and the rake angle, and the shear angle is more affected by the rake angle than by the hypotenbuse angle. 3. The friction angle is represented by .beta. = . pi. /4+ .alpha./ sub n/- .phi. which is different from Merchant's equation. 4. The pitch and the slip are greatly influenced by depth of cut, but the influence of the rake angle on it is small. 5. The normal stress and the shear stress on the shear plane decrease with the increase of the cutting depth, and they are almost independent on the variation of a rake angle. 6. The unit friction energy on the tool face, the unit shear energy on the shear plane, and the total cutting energy per unit volume decrease with the increase of rake angle and cutting depth.

Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) cutting is an emerging technology for precision cutting of difficult-to-machining materials with the distinct advantages of no thermal effect, high machinability, high flexibility and small cutting forces. This paper investigated theoretical and experimental cutting characteristics associated with abrasive waterjet cutting of quartz GE214. It is shown that the proper variations of several cutting parameters such as waterjet cutting pressure, cutting speed and cutting depth improve the roughness on workpiece surfaces produced by AWJ cutting. From the experimental results by AWJ cutting of quartz GE214, the optimal cutting conditions to improve the surface roughness and precision were proposed and discussed.

The quality of cutting surface such as surface roughness, heat affected zone, serf width can be improved by controlling the parameters of cuting process. These parameters includes cutting velocity, laser beam power, material depth and assistant gas. Thermodynamic analysis and systematical experiments are attempted to pedict and determine the optimal cutting condition. There exists the optimal cutting condition to ensure high quality surface. Under this operation, the minimum surface roughness of the mild steel, the stainless steel and the titanium becomes 3.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 13${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively.
