  • Purpose : To report the 'condylar cut-off sign', a new radiographic sign in knees with discoid lateral meniscus and to report the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the sign to elucidate the diagnostic significance of the sign for discoid meniscus. Materials and Methods : Fifty knees with complete discoid lateral meniscus and fifty normal knees formed the basis of this study. All of them were arthroscopically confirmed fer the discoid or normal lateral meniscus. The authors developed a method to measure the length of the medial and lateral condylar were compare and analyzed. Results : Tile average ratio was 0.716 in the discoid meniscus group, and 0.902 in the normal group. The stastistical analysis by the T-test revealed the t-value -11.13(p<0.0001). Stastistical analysis by chi-square test using cut point 0.8, also showed significant difference between the two groups, with $76\%$ sensitivity, $100\%$ specificity, $100\%$ positive predictive predictive value and $81\%$ negative predictive value. The 'condylar cut-off sign' was readily detectable in all cases of discoid lateral meniscus, suggesting that the cut off sign could serve as a simple and reliable radiographic sign fur the diagnosis of discoid meniscus. Conclusion : The condylar cut-off sign on the Tunnel view of simple radiography of the knee can serve as a good sign for the diagnosis of discoid lateral meniscus, with $100\%$ positive predictive value.

  • Five reinforced concrete rigid frame and masonry infilled wall and cut off type masonry infilled wall were tesed during vertical and cyclic loads simultaneously. Experimental programs were accomplished to improve and evaluate the structural performance of test specimens, such as the hysteretic behavior, the maximum horizontal strength, crack propagation, and ductility etc. Test variables are hoop reinforcement ratio, with or without masonry infilled wall, and masonry method. All the specimens were constructed in one-third scale size. Based on the test results, the following conclusions can be made. For masonry infilled wall(IFB-1), maximum horizontal capacity was increased by 1.45 time in comparision with that of rigid frame(FB-0). For cut off masonry infilled wall (IFBC-1~3), maximum horizontal capacity was increased by 1.73~1.98 time in comparision with that of rigid frame(FB-0). For cut off masonry infilled wall(IFBG-1~3), ductility was increased by 1.48~2.08 time in comparision with that of masonry infilled wall (IFB-1).

  • Cut-off sampling that discards a part of the population from the sampling frame, is a widely used method for a highly skewed population like a business survey. Usually to the estimate of population total, we need to estimate the total of the take-nothing stratum. Many estimators have been developed to estimate the total of the take-nothing stratum. In this paper, we suggest a new composite estimator which combines the estimator suggested by Sarndal et al. (1992) and a ratio estimator obtained by small samples from the take-nothing stratum. Small simulation studies are performed for the comparison of the estimators and we confirm that the new suggested estimator is superior to the others.

  • In this study, a series of random field test and dynamic analysis in the time domain were carried out in order to find in the reason of fatigue damage of the main and the secondary members in the 3-span continuous steel plate girder railway bridge being under in service over 60 years. From the measured and the analyzed results, the stress distribution patterns were investigated for the members with fatigue damage. In addition, global and local numerical stress analysis was performed for the members damaged severely by corrosion, to estimate variation of the distribution by corrosion. Finally, a reasonable cut-off ratio in the steel plate railway bridge will be proposed by analyzing the equivalent stress ranges according the ratio.

  • This study evaluated the usefulness of the elasticity score and strain ratio in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules in thyroid elastography. We performed a retrospective analysis based on the results of fine needle aspiration cytology. The Chi-square test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the difference between the five degrees of elasticity score and strain ratio according to the benign and malignant thyroid nodules. ROC curve analysis was used to determine the elasticity score and the best cut-off value of the strain ratio for the prediction of malignant nodules. There was a statistically significant difference (p=0.000) between the homogeneity of the elasticity score and the difference of the strain ratio between the benign and malignant nodule groups. On the ROC curve analysis, the elasticity score and the srain ratio for predicting benign and malignant nodules were determined as AUC 0.842, 0.700, cut-off value 3, 2.49 (p=0.001). Therefore, the elasticity score and strain ratio may be useful in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

  • In the silkworm egg production, cutting of the cocoon's edge formed by silkworms forced to aid the emergence, and emergence is related to the amount of alkaloid liquid in the sucking stomach in certain varieties. In this study, there was no difference between cutting of portion and sex, and no significant between cutting of both sides and one side cocoons when comparing their emergence ratio. Expenditures and emergence ratio between both sides and one side cutting off must be studied in coming future.

  • An elastic model is developed to predict the average thermal residual stresses in the matrix and fiber of a misoriented short fiber composite. The thermal residual stresses are induced by the mismatch in the coefficient of the thermal expansion of the matrix and fiber when the composite is subjected to a uniform temperature change. The model considers two special cases of fiber misorientation ; two-dimensional in-plane and three-dimensional axisymmetric. The analytical formulation of the model is based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and is nuque in that it is able to account for interactions among fibers. The model is more general than past models and it is able to treat prior analyses of the simpler composite systems as extram cases. The present model is to investigate the effects of fiber volume fraction, distribution type, distribution cut-off angle, and aspect ratio on thermal residual stress for both in-plane and axisymmetric fiber misorientation. Fiber volum fraction, aspect ratio, and disturbution cut-off angle are shown to have more significant effects on the magnitude of the thermal residual stress than fiber distrubution type for both in-plane and axisymmetric misorientation.

  • For the optimal design of an automotive blower system, effects of the scroll cut-off starting angle, the clearance between blade tip and bellmouth, and the scroll expansion angle on the performance of sirocco fan are investigated experimentally. Best performance is achieved at fan exposure ratio $\Deltae/r_c$,/TEX> =1.0, and clearance ratio $\DeltaeC/C=0.62. Flow characteristics inside sirocco fan are also studied by using LDV. Flow patterns in the inside of fan can be classified into three regions. Velocity vector has the same direction as rotational direction of fan at 0~$120^{\circ}$, toward the fan blades at 150~$180^{\circ}$, and opposite direction at 210~$330^{\circ}$. Turbulent intensity is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing.

  • The removal characteristics of cadmium in micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) were investigated by using an anionic biosurfactant, deoxycholic acid (DCA). The ultrafiltration experiments were performed in a batch-type stirred cell. The ultrafiltration membranes used were Millipore YM1, YM3, YM10, and YM30 which had a difference in molecular weight cut-off. The presence of cadmium ion in DCA solution tends to reduce the critical micell concentration considerably and increase the micell size. The molecular weight cut-off of ultrafiltration membrane had a minimal effect on cadmium removal whereas DCA/Cd ratio had a substantial influence. When DCA/Cd ratio was 3, the removal efficiency of cadmium was more than 99.6%. A relative flux, which is defined as ratio of the flux for a separation trial to that of deionized water run using the same piece of membrane, decreased in the order of YM3 > YM1 > YM10 > YM30.

  • Background: The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a simple index of systemic inflammatory response, and has been shown to be a prognostic indicator in some types of cancer. Inflammation has been implicated in the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of NLR with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and different benign thyroid pathologies like multinodular goiter (MNG) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the neutrophil, lymphocyte counts and NLR calculated from these parameters of 232 patients with histologically confirmed as multinodular goiter (group MNG) (n=70), lymphocytic thyroiditis (group LT) (n=97), LT with PTC (group LT-PTC) (n=25) and PTC (group PTC) (n=40). The optimal cut-off value for NLR was determined. Results: NLR level was significantly higher in groups LT-PTC and PTC as compared to groups MNG and LT (p<0.05). NLR of LT subgroups according to TSH levels were not different (p>0.05). When we grouped the patients as benign and malignant according to PTC presence, the optimum NLR cut-off point obtained from ROC analysis was 1.91 (sensitivity 89.0% and specificity 54.5%). Conclusions: Since NLR was significantly elevated in group LT-PTC and group PTC, NLR value may give an opinion as a potential marker in differentiation of benign and malign thyroid disorders. For this purpose a cut-off value of 1.91 for NLR may be accepted.
