The object of the paper is to describe the reliability of the unit based on the extensive operation databases. The custom power is similar in nature to the concept of FACTS(Flexibel AC Transmission System). By controlling reactive power, the technology offers utilities the opportunity for increased efficiency and their capabilities will permit transmission planners make the best use of their existing transmission resources. STATCOM is a custom power device in a way and can be used in a similar way for the dynamic compensation of power transmission systems, providing reactive power compensation, voltage regulation and mitigation of voltage flicker. It is shown that the STATCOM has clear advantages in areas such as; providing reactive power compensation and improving power factor.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for determining the kind and rating of power quality solutions. To determine the kind of solution, event cause and direction are utilized. According to the event cause and direction, an adequate type of solution is determined for effective compensation. To rate the required capacity of solution, the concept of lost energy is adopted. Lost voltage, lost power and lost energy are calculated and the rating of the solution is determined to compensate a specific event. The rating method that utilizes the result of stochastic diagnosis is also proposed. A power quality index such as CP95 is adopted for solution suggestion. The method developed in this paper is applied to the test system and proved to be useful for enhancing the power quality of the customer system. It can provide customers with information pertaining to what is a proper and cost-effective solution among various compensating devices.

  • This paper proposes a new 2MVA SSFG(Sag Swell Flicker Generator) injecting voltage by using series inverter. The proposed SSFG composes series inverter, DC capacitor as energy storage, rectifier and voltage clamp circuit. This SSFG is designed to generate typical power disturbances, such as voltage sag/swell, over/under voltage and voltage flicker. Also it is designed to generate unexpected voltage phase jumping waveform by controlling the series inverter. In this paper, three kinds of control methods for the proposed 2MVA SSFG we investigated by PSIM simulation. Also typical voltage sag, swell, flicker waveforms are implemented by adopting effective control method.

  • A new UPQC(unified power quality conditioner), which consists of series inverter, shunt inverter, dc/dc converter, and energy storage, is proposed. The proposing UPQC can compensate reactive power, harmonics, voltage sag and swell, voltage unbalance, and voltage interruption. The control strategy for the proposing UPWQC was derived using the instantaneous power method. The performance of proposing system was analyzed by means of the EMTDC/PSCAD simulation and the experimental work with the hardware prototype. The proposing UPQC has the ultimate capability of improving power quality at the point of installation on power distribution systems or industrial power systems and can be utilized for the custom power device in the future distribution system.

  • Recently, the interest on power quality has been hot issue because the equipments cause voltage disturbance and become more sensitive to the voltage disturbance. The DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer) is one of the Custom Power Device that can compensate the voltage. DVR operates as a series connected compensator whose output voltage can be controlled system voltage. And the magnitude of compensation voltage is limited by the characteristics of system and load. Compensation capability of DVR was simulated by EMTDC under several condition. This paper analyzed effect of DVR's compensation at power quality test center which has SSFG(Sag, swell, and Flicker Generator, CPDs(SSTS, DVR, DSTATCOM), and loads.

  • Studying the effects of gamma radiation on the instrumentation and control (I&C) system of a nuclear power plant is critical to the successful and reliable operation of the plant. In the accidental scenario, the adverse environment of ionizing radiation affects the performance of the I&C system and it leads to inaccurate and incomprehensible results. This paper reports the effects of gamma radiation on the AT89C51RD2, a commercial-off-the-shelf 8-bit high-performance flash microcontroller. The microcontroller, selected for the device under test for this study is used in the remote terminal unit for a nuclear power plant. The custom circuits were made to test the microcontroller under different gamma doses using a 60Co gamma source in both ex-situ and in-situ modes. The device was exposed to a maximum dose of 1.5 kGy. Under this hostile environment, the performance of the microcontroller was studied in terms of device current and voltage changes. It was observed that the microcontroller device can operate up to a total absorbed dose of approximately 0.6 kGy without any failure or degradation in its performance.

  • Since power analysis attack which uses a characteristic that power consumed by crypto device depends on processed data has been proposed, many logics that can block these correlation originally have been developed. DRP logic has been adopted by most of logics maintains power consumption balanced and reduces correlation between processed data and power consumption. However, semi-custom design is necessary because recently design circuits become more complex than before. This design method causes unbalanced design pattern that makes DRP logic consumes unbalanced power consumption which is vulnerable to power analysis attack. In this paper, we have developed new logic style which adds another discharge phase to discharge two output nodes at the same time based on DyCML to remove this unbalanced power consumption. Also, we simulated 1bit fulladder to compare proposed logic with other logics to prove improved performance. As a result, proposed logic is improved NED and NSD to 60% and power consumption reduces about 55% than any other logics.

  • Useful continuous sensing applications are increasingly emerging as a new class of mobile applications. Meanwhile, open, multi-use sensor devices are newly adopted beyond smartphones, and provide huge opportunities to expand potential application categories. In this upcoming environment, uncoordinated use of sensor devices would cause severe imbalance in power consumption of devices, and thus result in early shutdown of some sensing applications depending on power-hungry devices. In this paper, we propose EnergyCordy, a novel inter-device energy use coordination system; with a system-wide holistic view, it coordinates the energy use of concurrent sensing applications over multiple sensor devices. As its key approach, we propose a relaxed sensor association; it decouples the energy use of an application from specific sensor devices leveraging multiple context inference alternatives, allowing flexible energy coordination at runtime. We demonstrated the effectiveness of EnergyCordy by developing multiple example applications over custom-designed wearable senor devices. We show that EnergyCordy effectively coordinates the power usage of concurrent sensing applications over multiple devices and prevent undesired early shutdown of applications.
