The engineering merit of the "Effective Period" of bilinear isolation systems

  • This paper examines whether the "effective period" of bilinear isolation systems, as defined invariably in most current design codes, expresses in reality the period of vibration that appears in the horizontal axis of the design response spectrum. Starting with the free vibration response, the study proceeds with a comprehensive parametric analysis of the forced vibration response of a wide collection of bilinear isolation systems subjected to pulse and seismic excitations. The study employs Fourier and Wavelet analysis together with a powerful time domain identification method for linear systems known as the Prediction Error Method. When the response history of the bilinear system exhibits a coherent oscillatory trace with a narrow frequency band as in the case of free vibration or forced vibration response from most pulselike excitations, the paper shows that the "effective period" = $T_{eff}$ of the bilinear isolation system is a dependable estimate of its vibration period; nevertheless, the period associated with the second slope of the bilinear system = $T_2$ is an even better approximation regardless the value of the dimensionless strength,$Q/(K_2u_y)=1/{\alpha}-1$, of the system. As the frequency content of the excitation widens and the intensity of the acceleration response history fluctuates more randomly, the paper reveals that the computed vibration period of the systems exhibits appreciably scattering from the computed mean value. This suggests that for several earthquake excitations the mild nonlinearities of the bilinear isolation system dominate the response and the expectation of the design codes to identify a "linear" vibration period has a marginal engineering merit.

  • In waste repository environment, we can process the waste history efficiently for reuse by recording the history trajectory of the vehicle which loaded waste and the dumping position of the waste vehicle. By mapping the unloaded waste to 3D and by extracting the dumping point, a new method was implemented so as to record the final dumping position and the waste content under various experiments. In this paper, we developed the algorithm which tracking the vehicle and deciding the moment of dumping in landfills. We first trace the position of vehicle using the difference image between current image and background image and then we decide the stop point from the shape of vehicle route and detect the dumping point by comparing the dumping image with the image that vehicle is stopping. From the camera parameters, The transform method between screen coordinate and real coordinate of landfills is proposed.

The Effects of Cement Alkalinity upon the Pore Water Alkalinity and the Chloride Threshold Level of Reinforcing Steel in Concrete

  • Cement of three alkalinities (equivalent alkalinities of 0.36,0.52 and 0.97) was employed in fabricating a set of classical G109 type specimens. To-date, these have been subjected to a one week wet-one week dry cyclic pending using 15 w/o NaCl solution. At the end of the dry period, potential and macro-cell current were measured to indicate whether the top reinforcing steel was in the passive or active state. Once this bar became active, the specimen was autopsied and the extent of corrosion was documented. Subsequent to visual inspection, concrete powder samples were collected from the upper region of the top rebar trace; and at a certain times concrete cores were taken from non-reinforced specimens. Using these, determinations were made of (1) critical chloride concentration for corrosion initiation ($Cl_{th}^-$), (2) effective chloride diffusion coefficient ($D_e$), and (3) pore water alkalinity ($[OH^-]$). The pore water alkalinity was strongly related to the alkali content of cement that was used in the mix. The chloride concentration, ($Cl^-$), was greater at active than at passive sites, presumably as a consequence of electro migration and accumulation of these species at active site subsequent to corrosion initiation. Accordingly, ($Cl^-$) at passive sites was considered indicative of the threshold concentration fur corrosion initiation. The $Cl_{th}^-$ was increased with increasing Time-to-corrosion ($T_i$). Consequently, the HA(High Alkalinity) specimens exhibited the highest $Cl_{th}^-$ and the NA(Normal Alkalinity) was the least. This range exceeds what has previously been reported in North America. In addition, the effective diffusion coefficient, $D_e$, was about 40 percent lower for concrete prepared with the HA cement compared to the NA and LA(Low Alkalinity) ones.

  • The current population of elderly is increasing and the with an extended average lifespan, the frequency of cancerous occurrences have also increased, with these increases and the increase in radiotherapy for cancer patients, recognitions of harm and importance have become known. This article was known tumor treatment of patients with hematopoietic disorder by doing a comparative study on the changes in blood cells caused by the acute effects of trace dose to high dose of radiation exposed to mice. According to the sensitizer injection may give rise to harm to the components of peripheral blood. This material needs to be considered when for treating tumor patients and the risks of hematopoietic harm and believe that radiation therapy will be reasonable.

  • This paper suggests a new map-matching algorithm for matching traveling trace of vehicle, which is measured by GPS receiver, to the road of a digital map This eventually brings the Improvement of positioning accuracy of the vehicle with GPS receiver After representing the travelling vehicle's motion by state equations using Singer's model, the proposed map-matching algorithm places the position of a vehicle right on the road and also improves the positioning accuracy of the vehicle using a Kalman filter In the crossroad, since it is difficult to determine precisely a current travelling road, we take linear regression to the estimated values from Kalman filtering This gives the direction angle of turning vehicle, then we can determine the correct route direction after comparing with each route-direction angle at the intersection.

A Study on Development of Enhancement Guidelines of Smart Application Accessibility for the Disabled (장애인을 위한 스마트 애플리케이션 접근성 향상 가이드라인 개발 연구)

  • In current information society, there is a barrier called digital divide. Due to this barrier, the disabled have difficulties to communicate with the world. Recently, with advanced smart techniques, smart devices become necessity for the disabled. Currently improvements of smart application accessibility become a great concern for the disabled. The purpose of this paper is to present some guidelines for enhancing smart application accessibility for the disabled. The enhancement guidelines are developed based on the existing mobile accessibility guidelines and modified for better adaptability for the disabled. Our principles are as follows: minimizing blue light emission from smart devices, automatic focus on input window, action trace, font color change, emergency notification by motion, gesture recognition, control location, scrolling avoidance, auditory service for visual warning, and icon literation.

A Study on Efficient Design of Rockfall Prevention Netting (낙석방지망의 효율적 설계를 위한 기초연구)

  • In order to obtain basic data for reasonable design of rockfall prevention net unreasonably being designed according to experiences, this paper determined a standard cross section and analyzed the effects of parameters such as inclination and height of slope faces, rockfall weight, separation distance on rockfall behaviors such as bounce height, kinetic energy and passage rate. The weight of rockfall changed from 400 kg to 700 kg and then to 1,000 kg. With the height of 20 m as the standard, the test was conducted with the inclination at $63^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ which may affect rockfall behaviors. Analysis was made while changing the fall height of rockfall from 3 m to 15 m and then to 20 m, thereby analyzing and evaluating changes in maximal kinetic energy occurring in the base of slope. According to the analysis result, in designing a rockfall prevention wire net, a design considering various conditions including inclination of the slope, expected size or weight of rockfall, situation of the slope and the shape of rockfall, and rockfall trace is judged necessary beyond the current uniform application.

HORIZON RUN 4 SIMULATION: COUPLED EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES AND LARGE-SCALE STRUCTURES OF THE UNIVERSE

  • The Horizon Run 4 is a cosmological N-body simulation designed for the study of coupled evolution between galaxies and large-scale structures of the Universe, and for the test of galaxy formation models. Using 63003 gravitating particles in a cubic box of Lbox = 3150 h−1Mpc, we build a dense forest of halo merger trees to trace the halo merger history with a halo mass resolution scale down to Ms = 2.7 × 1011h−1M. We build a set of particle and halo data, which can serve as testbeds for comparison of cosmological models and gravitational theories with observations. We find that the FoF halo mass function shows a substantial deviation from the universal form with tangible redshift evolution of amplitude and shape. At higher redshifts, the amplitude of the mass function is lower, and the functional form is shifted toward larger values of ln(1/σ). We also find that the baryonic acoustic oscillation feature in the two-point correlation function of mock galaxies becomes broader with a peak position moving to smaller scales and the peak amplitude decreasing for increasing directional cosine μ compared to the linear predictions. From the halo merger trees built from halo data at 75 redshifts, we measure the half-mass epoch of halos and find that less massive halos tend to reach half of their current mass at higher redshifts. Dynamic Change of Stresses in Subsoil under Concrete Slab Track Subjected to Increasing Train Speeds (열차 증속에 따른 콘크리트 궤도 노반의 동적 응력 변화)

  • Societal interest on a faster transportation demands an increase of the train speed exceeding current operation speed of 350 km/h. To trace the pattern of variations in displacements and subsoil stresses in the concrete slab track system, finite element simulations were conducted. For a simple track-vehicle modeling, a mass-point system representing the moving train load was developed. Dynamic responses with various train speeds from 100 to 700 km/h were investigated. As train speeds increase the displacement at rail and subsoil increases nonlinearly, whereas significant dynamic amplification at the critical velocity has not been found. At low train speed, the velocity of elastic wave carrying elastic energy is faster than the train speed. At high train speed exceeding 400 km/h, however, the train speed is approximately identical to the elastic wave velocity. Nonlinearity in the stress history in subsoil is amplified with increasing train speeds, which may cause significant plastic strains in path-dependent subsoil materials.

A Robust Face Tracking System using Effective Detector and Kalman Filter (효과적인 검출기와 칼만 필터를 이용한 강인한 얼굴 추적 시스템)

  • We present a robust face tracking system from the sequence of video images based on effective detector and Kalman filter. To construct the effective face detector, we extract the face features using the five types of simple Haar-like features. Extracted features are reinterpreted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and interpreted principal components are used for Support Vector Machine (SVM) that classifies the faces and non-faces. We trace the moving face with Kalman filter, which uses the static information of the detected faces and the dynamic information of changes between previous and current frames. To make a real-time tracking system, we reduce processing time by adjusting the frequency of face detection. In this experiment, the proposed system showed an average tracking rate of 95.5% and processed at 15 frames per second. This means the system is robust enough to track faces in real-time.
