  • In the current Korea highway bridge design code (KHBDC), the criteria of concrete bridge decks are mainly based on short span decks of steel plate girder bridge, there are very little the specific criteria of long span decks in the twin steel plate girder bridge. Therefore, to put more rational and practical design criteria of the long span decks on the code, the complements of the related criteria are required in the current design code. This paper proposed the design bending moments of decks with 6.0~12.0m span for KL-510 load in direction to bridge (longitudinal direction) and perpendicular direction to bridge (transverse direction). The effects of orthotropic concrete decks, stiffness of steel girders and multiple lane loading factors (MLLF) were reflected in the design bending moments. The proposed design bending moments were compared to the design bending moments with DB-24 load.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid heuristic and criteria-based method of optimum design which combines the advantages of both the iterated simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and the rigorously derived optimality criteria (OC) for structural optimum design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under multi-load cases based on the current Chinese design codes. The entire optimum design procedure is divided into two parts: strength optimum design and stiffness optimum design. A modified SA with the strategy of adaptive feasible region is proposed to perform the discrete optimization of RC frame structures under the strength constraints. The optimum stiffness design is conducted using OC method with the optimum results of strength optimum design as the lower bounds of member size. The proposed method is integrated into the commercial software packages for building structural design, SATWE, and for finite element analysis, ANSYS, for practical applications. Finally, two practical frame-shear-wall structures (15-story and 30-story) are optimized to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed optimum design method.

  • The floor thickness in residential buildings may not satisfy the floor vibration criteria even though the thickness is determined by the serviceability requirements in current design provisons. Thus it is necessary to develop the procedure to determine slab thickness that satisfies the floor vibration criteria. In this study provide the methods to determine the slab thickness that satisfies the vertical floor vibration criteria for several sizes of flat plate floor system. Randomness inherent in young modulus of concrete and heel drop intensity was accounted. For this purpose Monte Carlo simulation procedure was adopted.

  • In the design of slopes during rainfall, the groundwater level is assumed to be located at the ground surface, based on the change in characteristics of rainfall. In addition, stability investigations are performed for large cut slopes in the design of slopes while standard inclinations specified in the design criteria are applied for the slopes that stability investigations are not performed. In spite of the strengthened criteria of groundwater location, slope failures continuously occur during heavy rainfall, regardless of magnitude of slopes. In order to investigate the cause of the failures, stability investigations have been performed on standard inclination of slopes suggested in the design criteria for both dry and rainfall cases by ground condition in this research. Despite that standard inclination of slopes specified in the design criteria should be stable for both dry and rainfall cases, the results show that standard factor of safety has not been obtained in many cases; more than 50% of total cases for dry cases and more than 65% of total cases for rainfall case. Based on the results, this paper indicates the problems in the current design criteria and proposes the plans for establishment of countermeasure.

  • This study investigates reliability based design criteria for the spiral R.C. columns, and proposes practical algorithm which is based on Ellingwood's algorithm for the reliability analysis and the derivation of reliability based design criteria. Cornell's MFOSM theory is used for the derivation of the algorithm for the evaluation of uncertainties associated with resistances, whereas the magnitude of the uncertainties associated with load effects are chosen primarily by considering our level of practice. And thus the uncertainties so obtained are applied for the relilability analysis and the derivation of reliability based design criteria. A target reliability (${\beta}_0=3.5$) is selected as an appropriate value by comparing the values used in foreign countries and by analyzing, the reliability levels of our current USD and WSD design standards. Then, a set of load and resistance factors corresponding to the target reliability is proposed as a reliability based design provision, and furthermore a set of allowable stresses for reinforcing steel and concrete having same level of reliability with the corresponding LRFD criteria is also propared for the current WSD design provision. It may be concluded that the proposed LRFD reliability based design provisions and the corresponding allowable stresses give more rational design than the current code for spiral R.C. columns.

  • Current seismic design provisions such as ASCE 7-10 provide criteria for selecting ground motions for conducting response history analysis. This study is the sequel of a companion paper (I - Ground Motion Selection) for assessment of the ASCE 7-10 criteria. To assess of the ASCE 7-10 criteria, nonlinear response history analyses of twelve single degree of freedom (SDF) systems and one multi-degree of freedom (MDF) system are conducted in this study. The results show that the target seismic demands for SDF can be predicted using the mean seismic demands over seven and ten ground motions selected according to the proposed method within an error of 30% and 20%, respectively

  • Because of the inherent random nature of most manmade and environmental loadings and materials as well as the emperfect structural analysis, the reliability-based structural design has been recognized as a rational approach and the probability-based design criteria has been successfully developed for many standards. In order to do this it is necessary to establish target reliability levels, for which the reliability levels inherent in present design practice will be used as a rational guide. In this study the reliability levels implied in current practices, therefore, are investigated using the load and resistance models developed for domestic uses.

  • A study of counter-current two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been performed. Two-phase flow regimes were experimentally investigated in a 760mm long and 100mm wide test section with 2.0 and 5.0mm gap widths. The resulting flow regime maps were compared with the existing transition criteria. The experimental data and the transition criteria of the models showed relatively good agreement. However, the discrepancies between the experimental data and the model predictions of the flow regime transition become pronounced as the gap width increased. As the gap width increased the transition gas superficial velocities increased. The critical void fraction for the bubbly-to-slug transition was observed to be about 0.25. The two-phase distribution parameter for the slug flow was larger for the narrower channel. The uncertainties in the distribution parameter could lead to a disagreement in slug-to-churn transition between the experimental findings and the transition criteria. For the transition from churn to annular flow the effect of liquid superficial velocity was found to be insignificant.
