  • The thermal and dielectric properties of unsaturated polyester resin system during cure were analyzed under Isothermal conditions. Both $varepsilon$′ and $varepsilon$" decreased and dipole relaxation was observed under isothermal conditions during cure. The ionic conductivity decreased linearly with the conversion according to the Kienle-Rate equation (ln($varepsilon$"$_{ionic}$we$_{0}$)=C$_{r}$$alpha$+C$_{0}$) up to $alpha$=0.15, after which it aparted from the relationship due to the entanglement of polymer chains. The effect of ionic conductivity was revealed to be larger than that of dipole motion during the whole cure through the electrical modulus analysis. Although dielectric motion was analyzed with Debye model, it was observed only at a narrow time region of middle stage of cure. In order to estimate the dielectric properties during the whole cure, the Havriliak-Negami model was considered and modified with the strong effect of ionic conductivity. The changes of $varepsilon$′ and $varepsilon$" were well estimated with this modified Havriliak-Negami model.

  • The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and conversion (${\alpha}$) were measured for a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy/aromatic amine system incorporated with an organic-inorganic hybrid molecule, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). Samples isothermally cured at varying cure temperatures and times were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). $T_g$ vs. ln (time) data at an arbitrary reference were superposed by time-temperature shifts for the kinetically controlled reaction, and the shift factors were used to calculate an Arrhenius activation energy. Influence of POSS was investigated from $T_g$ vs. ${\alpha}$ data, which in turn were fitted with DiBenedetto equation.

  • In the present study, the fluorescence behavior ova phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5) resin, a bismaleimide (BMI) resin, and various LaRC PETI-5/BMI blends with different blend compositions has been characterized as a function of heat-treatment temperature, using a steady-state fluorescence technique with a front-face illumination method far solid-state films. It is observed that there are distinguishable changes in the spectral shape, size, and position of fluorescence with varying heat-treatment temperature in the pure and blend samples. The result is qualitatively explained in terms of charge transfer complex formation as well as microenvironmental change with local mobility and viscosity occurring in the LaRC PETI-5, BMI, and their blends during the cure process. The result also implies that a steady-state fluorescence technique may be a useful tool to understand the processing conditions of polyimides and their blends in the film form on the basis of their thermo-photophysical responses.

  • In this study, we investigated for natural rubber foam to replace petrochemical-based neoprene foam. Experiments were conducted on vulcanization system and 2-step foaming process of natural rubber. The vulcanization system were EV(Efficient Vulcanization Cure), Semi-EV(Semi-Efficient Vulcanization Cure) and CV(Conventional Vulcanization Cure). In the 2-step foaming process, first molding temperature was 140℃, times were 15, 20, 25, and 30minutes, and the second molding temperature was 160℃, the times 5, 10, 15, and 20minutes. The cure and viscosity characterization were evaluated by oscillating disc rheometer (ODR) and mooney viscosmeter. Various mechanical characteristics, including hardness, tensile strength, elongation at the point of rupture, and tear strength, were quantified. Subsequently, an assessment of alterations in these mechanical attributes was conducted post-immersion in a NaCl solution. In addition degree of volume change was measured after immersing the NR foam in NaCl solution and the low-temperature permanent compression set was evaluated at 4℃. And expansion ratio and shrinkage ratio of NR foam were evaluated for 28 days. As a result the EV vulcanization system showed the least change in physical properties before and after salt water immersion, and the lowest shrinkage ratio for 28 days. In addition it was confirmed that the 2-step foaming optimum condition differed depending on the appropriate vulcanization condition.

  • In this study, we investigated for Bio-EPDM foam with oyster shell surface modified earth coupling agent. Experiments were carried out to confirm the bio-EPDM/Oyster shell foam applying content of earth coupling agent. The cure characterization were evaluated by measuring the mooney viscosity and oscillating disc rheometer (ODR). Mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, elogation at break and tear strength were measured, and changes of mechanical properties were also evaluated after immersion in NaCl solution. In addition degree of volume change was measured after immersing the Bio-EPDM foam in NaCl solution and the low-temperature permanent compression set was evaluated at 4℃. To evaluate the low-temperature characteristics of Bio-EPDM/Oyster shell, the glass transition temperature was measured using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). As a result as the content of the earth coupling agent increased up to 3phr, the crosslinking density and mooney viscosity increased, and the mechanical properties and low-temperature permanent compression set improved, but from 4phr, it was rather decreased. The change in the glass transition temperature was insignificant, and the foam cell appeared to be uniform when the earth coupling agent was applied.

  • Two different diene monomers [dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB)] as self-healing agents for polymeric composites were microencapsuled by in situ polymerization of urea and formaldehyde. We obtained plots of the storage modulus (G') and tan $\delta$ as a function of cure time by using dynamic mechanical analysis to investigate the cure behavior of the unreacted self-healing agent mixture in the presence of a catalyst. Glass transition temperatures (T$\_$g/) and exothermic reactions of samples cured for 5 and 120 min in the presence of different amounts of the catalyst were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. Of the two dienes, ENB may have advantages as a self-healing agent because, when cured under same conditions as DCPD, it reacts much faster in the presence of a much lower amount of catalyst, has no melting point, and produces a resin that has a higher value of T$\_$g/. Microcapsules containing the healing agent were successfully formed from both of the diene monomers and were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. Optical microscopy and a particle size analyzer were employed to observe the morphology and size distribution, respectively, of the microcapsules. The microcapsules exhibited similar thermal properties as well as particle shapes and sizes.

  • To improve the adhesive strength of natural rubber (NR) for a seismic isolation damper, citraconic acid-g-NR (CCA-g-NR) was synthesized via the melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto NR using an azobisisnomerobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator. Subsequently, the influence of CCA and AIBN concentrations on the graft ratio G/R (%) and graft efficiency G/E (%) of the CCA-g-NR was investigated. The optimum CCA and AIBN concentrations required to achieve the desired G/R (3.49%) and G/E (49.8%) were found to be 7 phr and 0.13 phr, respectively. Additionally, we studied the influence of CCA-g-NR concentration on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 300%), adhesive strength, and cure characteristics of the rubber compound in the seismic isolation damper. As the concentration of CCA-g-NR increased, the elongation at break and adhesive strength of the compound increased, whereas its tensile strength and modulus at 300% decreased. Moreover, as the concentration increased, the maximum torque decreased and the scorch time was delayed to obtain an optimal vulcanization time.

  • In the manufacturing of large scale composite structures, the cost-effective processing and the enhancement of structural performance are critical. One of the most effective ways for this purpose is to use stitched multiaxial warp knitted (MWK) perform in the resin transfer molding process. This study reports the effect of stitching on the mechanical properties of MWK composites, and the feasibility processing of the thick U-beam structure utilizing the stitched preforms. Permeability of the preform, viscosity and cure property of the epoxy resin have been measured. The results of resin flow analysis has been used in determining the gate/vent locations of the RTM mold. Cross-sectional observation of the channel beam prototype demonstrated that the resin impregnation was almost complete, except for some surrounding area of stitched yarns.

  • A novel silicon-containing epoxy resin, the diglycidylether of bisphenol A-silicon (DGEBA-Si), was synthesized and characterized. The properties of the DGEBA-Si epoxy resin cured with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM), including its cure behavior, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and mechanical strength were investigated. The char yield of the DGEBA-Si/DDM system was higher than that of a commercial DGEBA/DDM system, indicating that the DGEBA-Si epoxy resin showed good flame-retardance. The cured DGEBA-Si/DDM specimens possessed lower glass transition temperatures and higher mechanical properties than DGEBA/DDM specimens. These features were attributed to the introduction of siloxane groups into the main chain of the epoxy resin, which resulted in the improved flexibility of the cured DGEBA-Si/DDM system.

  • Physical properties of NR vulcanizates cured by both sulfur and resole were studied. Cure characteristics of the compounds were also investigated. Two types of resoles with different molecular weight distributions were employed. The scorch time of the NR compound containing the resole with a low molecular weight distribution was shorter than that of the compound containing the resole with a high one. Crosslink densities of the NR vulcanizates with a high resole content after the thermal aging at $95^{\circ}C$ decreased, while that of the vulcanizate without resole after the thermal aging at $95^{\circ}C$ increased. Though crosslink densities of the NR vulcanizates with a high resole content decreased with increasing the aging time, the moduli increased while the tensile strength and tear strength decreased.
