In this study, carbon steel (A53) is used as the material for the pipes in a marine plant and ship industry. Welds are necessary to join the carbon steel, and the effect of this welding on the properties of the carbon steel has been studied by many researchers. In this study, the dynamic behavior of welded carbon steel was studied using an acoustic emission (AE) technique, which is a nondestructive test. There are numerous AE parameters that can be used to analyze the damage behavior of carbon steel by external loading. The AE parameters of energy, cumulative count, amplitude, and AE event were used, and each parameter was differentiated according to the degree of damage to the carbon steel. The energy showed a high level at the elastic range of the load curve, while the amplitude had the highest value at the hardening region. The cumulative count showed a growth tendency similar to the loading curve. In addition, an ultrasonic technique and hardness test were applied to evaluate the mechanical properties according to the base zone, HAZ region, and weld zone of the weld specimen. The velocity and attenuation ratio showed little change between zones, and an evaluation of the ultrasonic waves on each zone of the specimen was found to be a useful method to clarify the mechanical properties of the carbon steel.
This paper considers the optimal design of accelerated life test in which the stress is linearly increased. It discusses the special case when the life distribution under constant stress follows an exponential distribution and the accelerated equation satisfies the inverse power law. It is assumed that cumulative damage is linear, that is, the remaining life of test units depends only on the current cumulative fraction failed and current stress(cumulative exposure model). The optimization criterion is the asymptotic variance of the maximum likelihood estimator of the log mean life at a design stress. The optimal increasing rate is obtained to minimize the asymptotic variance. Table of sensitivity analysis is given for the prior estimators of model parameters.
This paper presents the fatigue behavior of composite materials with impact-induced damage under 2 level block loading. For this purpose, the 2 level block loading fatigue tests were performed on the impacted composite laminate. The fatigue life of the laminate under the block loading is greatly influenced by the impact damage; the effect of impact damage can be characterized by the present impact damage parameter. Based on this parameter, the model is developed to predict the fatigue life under block loading and the results by this model agree well with experimental results regardless of applied impact energy. Also, stochastic model is established to describe the variation of cumulative damage behavior and fatigue life due to the material nonhomogeneity.

In order to study the degradation and damage behaviors of steel frame welded connections, two series of tests in references with different connection constructions were carried out subjected to various cyclic loading patterns. Hysteretic curves, degradation and damage behaviours and fatigue properties of specimens were firstly studied. Typical failure modes and probable damage reasons were discussed. Then, various damage index models with variables of dissipative energy, cumulative displacement and combined energy and displacement were summarized and applied for all experimental specimens. The damage developing curves of ten damage index models for each connection were obtained. Finally, the predicted and evaluated capacities of damage index models were compared in order to describe the degraded performance and failure modes. The characteristics of each damage index model were discussed in depth, and then their distributive laws were summarized. The tests and analysis results showed that the loading histories significantly affected the distributive shapes of damage index models. Different models had their own ranges of application. The selected parameters of damage index models had great effect on the developing trends of damage curves. The model with only displacement variable was recommended because of a more simple form and no integral calculation, which was easier to be formulated and embedded in application programs.
A newly developed method based on energy is presented to study the damage pattern of FRP material. Basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) is employed to monitor the damage under fatigue loading. In this study, acoustic emission technique (AE) combined with scanning electronic microscope (SEM) technique is employed to monitor the damage evolution of the BFRP specimen in an approximate continuous scanning way. The AE signals are analyzed based on the wavelet transform, and the analyses are confirmed by SEM images. Several damage patterns of BFRP material, such as matrix cracking, delamination, fiber fracture and their combinations, are identified through the experiment. According to the results, the cumulative energy (obtained from wavelet coefficients) of various damage patterns are closely related to the damage evolution of the BFRP specimens during the entire fatigue tests. It has been found that the proposed technique can effectively distinguish different damage patterns of FRP materials and describe the fatigue damage evolution.

The current research focuses on the seismic vulnerability assessment of typical Southern Europe buildings, based on processing of a large set of observational damage data. The presented study constitutes a sequel of a previous research. The damage statistics have been enriched and a wider damage database (178578 buildings) is created compared to the one of the first presented paper (73468 buildings) with Damage Probability Matrices (DPMs) after the elaboration of the results from post-earthquake surveys carried out in the area struck by the 7-9-1999 near field Athens earthquake. The dataset comprises buildings which developed damage in several degree, type and extent. Two different parameters are estimated for the description of the seismic demand. After the classification of damaged buildings into structural types they are further categorized according to the level of damage and macroseismic intensity. The relative and the cumulative frequencies of the different damage states, for each structural type and each intensity level, are computed and presented, in terms of damage ratio. Damage Probability Matrices (DPMs) are obtained for typical structural types and they are compared to existing matrices derived from regions with similar building stock and soil conditions. A procedure is presented for the classification of those buildings which initially could not be discriminated into structural types due to restricted information and hence they had been disregarded. New proportional DPMs are developed and a correlation analysis is fulfilled with the existing vulnerability relations.
This paper illustrates the results of a seismic vulnerability study aimed to derive the fragility curves for typical Algerian reinforced concrete bridge piers using an analytical approach. Fragility curves express the probability of exceeding a certain damage state for a given ground motion intensity (e.g., PGA). In this respect, a set of 41 worldwide accelerometer records from which, 21 Algerian strong motion records are included, have been used in a non-linear dynamic response analyses to assess the damage indices expressed in terms of the bridge displacement ductility, the ultimate ductility, the cyclic loading factor and the cumulative energy ductility. Combining the damage indices defined for 5 damage rank with the ground motion indices, the fragility curves for the bridge piers were derived assuming a lognormal distribution.
Fatigue evaluations for the rotor blades of commercial or military rotorcraft have been carried out using the safe life concept since 1950s. Particularly, in the case of a rotor blade made of a composite material, a highly reliable fatigue life could be predicted by evaluation the cumulative damage using combination of fatigue life curve and load spectrum. However, there is a limit in adequately evaluating the strength reducing phenomena caused by damages or defects generated during the manufacturing process or impact damage induced by operational usages, using only the safe life concept. In this study, the fatigue evaluation process based on the damage tolerance concept is described and illustrated by means of successful application to substantiate the retirement time of composite rotor blades.
