A modern architectural building is a cultural heritage, which is also part of our history until the present. Documentation is thus considered an irreplaceable method to preserve our cultural heritage as it may be the last resort of preservation. The study analyzed the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) on the Heritage Documentation Programs of the National Park Service. Based on the analysis of the comparison and documentation of the modern architectural building implemented by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the study suggested improvement plans from three different perspectives. First, specifically detailed regulations of the legal system are supposed to be used for the implementation of the documentation of modern architectural buildings. Second, it is suggested that a general plan for continuous documentation be made. Last, by setting up a collection method, an information service needs to be provided for the public.

Ecosystem services (ES) are the benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. Traditional ES assessment methods have focused on the supply of ES, using biophysical data. However, these methods often fail to capture the full value of ES, which is also determined by social and cultural factors. This study proposes a new approach to ES assessment that incorporates socio-cultural perspectives. The study was conducted in Seoul, South Korea. A survey was conducted of 1,805 residents of Seoul to assess their satisfaction with ecosystem services. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify bundles of ES that were perceived as important by residents. A revised importance-satisfaction analysis was used to calculate the urgency level of each bundle. The results of the study showed that the 21 ES that were considered in the survey could be grouped into three bundles: urban green area-based, biodiversity-based, and resilience-based. The urgency level analysis showed that some bundles were more important than others, and that some bundles were more urgent than others. The findings of this study have several implications. First, they suggest that a socio-cultural approach to ES assessment can provide a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of ES. Second, they show that this approach can be used to identify areas where ES management is most needed. Third, they suggest that this approach could be used to inform ES management and policy decisions.

Huam-dong is a representative area from the Japanese colonial period and is the space where most Japanese-style buildings remain in Seoul. Interest in modern cultural heritage continues to increase, including the registration of cultural properties in 2001, building assets in 2015, and the registration of cultural property units in 2018. As the debate continues over the necessity of preserving cultural heritage that reminds us of the Japanese colonial, there is a need for research to grasp the perceptions of stakeholders along with the perceived value of such spaces. This study identified the subjective perception types of the stakeholders concerned with the Japanese-style building group in Huam-dong, analyzed characteristics by types, and debated the issues. For this purpose, Q methodology, which is a statistical technique for measuring human self-subjectivity and extracting common human perspectives, was used. A literature study on the values of Huam-dong and modern cultural heritage was conducted, and a Q questionnaire based on five aspects of modern cultural heritage values (historical, architectural, sociocultural, landscape, and economic) was applied. The results of the study depicted three types of cognition and showed different attitudes toward the Japanese building group. This study found a conflict comparing the perceptional differences between the types of cognition. This study is meaningful in that it provides an in-depth approach to the perspectives of the stakeholders concerned with the Japanese-style buildings clustered in central Seoul. It is also meant to present a theoretical framework that can be applied to the use area as sustainable cultural heritage through the establishment of preservation and utilization of Japanese-style areas and conflict resolution.
Due to the remarkable changes in the early twentieth century, the new invention and technology impacted peoples' everyday lives and people started to use the word, modern, to apply specifically to what pertained to present times and to designate a movement in what was new and not old-fashioned-a condition of newness. In the present day, however, the fantastic cultural changes of a century ago have now become commonplace, and what was once considered radically new is no longer a reason to marvel. This paper considers what it mean to be modern, once the new is no longer new. This question seems to remain as complicated and inappropriate to ponder because the consideration and impact of modernity cannot simply end with the end of an era. This paper investigates how the interconnected nature of popular culture provides apt illustrations to reveal the ambivalent nature of modernity and postmodernity. In doing so, first of all, this paper pays attentions to the notion of modernity and popular culture which emerged together in the early twentieth century when technology and mass consumer culture were promoted over the world. Also, it examines how popular culture represents a complex of mutually-interdependent perspectives and values that influence society and its institutions in various ways as the image of modernity continues to build in a postmodern era. That is, popular culture is identified as a large amount of intertextuality or collective experiences due to its intermingling of complementary distribution sources and techonology. Thus, this paper explores that popular culture devotes itself other images or narratives instead of referring to the real world and its output revisits the contemporary or past times in other places, being a means to produce and reproduce the accumulated images of the modern which shapes ceaseless simulacra of modernity over complexities of modernity. In order to find a critical juncture of the complex networks of modernity and popular culture, this paper considers two places, Chicago and Gyeongsung in the 1920s and 1930s in which the rapid modern experience took place and the modern movement forced the two societies to join the mass consumer culture whether willingly or not. Next, this paper considers two movies released in 2002 and 2008 that exemplify the complexities of modernity in Chicago and Gyeongung of the 1920s and 30s: Chicago and Modern Boy. Both films have common themes of the 1920s and 30s such as violence, adultery, femme fatal, and criminal themes with the forms of musical, dance, drama, and romance. Through the textual analysis of both Chicago and Modern Boy, two films are compared in observing the similar and different ways in which two films deal with the theme of modernity when they are represented from the contemporary perspectives. More specifically, this paper questions how modernity is present in contemporary cultural forms such as commercial and hybrid genre films; and how these movies create a new image of modern by embodying the double coding. Ultimately, this paper aims at realizing the paradox of double edged modernity and its ongoing discourse that controls people's consciousness through the medium of popular culture.

This study is performed to fine a way to illuminate the direction of depression study suitable to Korean culture. To do so, it is found that from when we started to use the term of 'depression' and how we Koreans conceptualize depression. And cultural psychological perspectives to psychopathology including depression are reviewed. Finally, based on these findings, the ways to study depression with the perspective of cultural psychology are suggested. Specifically speaking, at the first, it is found that the term of depression has not been used before colonialized times by Japan, but terms of 'Ul-Uep', 'Kwang-Zeung', and 'Jun-Kwanng' are used from at least times of King SeJong. Term of depression was actually used after liberation from Japan and spread after introduction of DSM to Korea via Japan. Second, the way to compromise universalist and relativist perspectives is recommended and the perspective of absolutist is not recommended. Lastly, in Korea depression shares with 'HwaByung' in some area, but not with 'Han'. In conclusion, it is desirable to combine etic factors(universal perspective) and emic factors(culture-relative perspective) to study depression suitable for Korean culture.
Before the industrial revolution architecture has been shaped by the natural and cultural inputs. Local constraints become more effective determinants of architecture in the rural contexts because by being disengaged from the webs of transportation and communication, rural settlements have achieved sustainability in difficult conditions. The examples of rural settlement and architecture have provided sustainability through integration with natural inputs within the geographical context because they have reached the goals of ecological design within the local constraints. Although this feature of the rural cultural landscapes has been emphasized frequently, tangible standards could not be developed in order to interpret their ecological design principles from the perspectives of the contemporary building sector and planning. However, the historical experience indicates that the sustenance of ecological performance can be possible as a result of integrated planning at the overall scale of the settlement. Therefore, the existing standards are not qualified for interpreting the rural contexts. This study develops a method for analysing, interpreting and evaluating traditional rural settlements and certifying new implementations in the rural environments in the light of the given literature review, discussion and methodological proposal.
This study was aimed at developing and providing textbook writers with information and materials required to introduce forest education ideas and paradigm into primary, middle, and high school students, responding to establishment of the new national curriculum. Research methods included interview with school teachers, literature review on forest education and policy, analysis of writings and drawings of elementary school students. As a primary result, the study produced a framework that can be applied to analyze and understand how people think of and put a value on forest, consisting of 1) Resource-Economic Perspective, 2) Environmental-Ecological Perspective, 3) Cultural-Educational Perspective, and 4) Existential-Ethical Perspective. To test its validity, the developed framework was applied to the processes of reorganizing and interpreting the outcomes of teacher interview and writings and drawings of elementary school students. The results of applications showed that current school education mostly focused on ecological-environmental (about 50%) and cultural-educational (about 30%) perspectives on forest. To improve the quality of current forest education in schools, five main directions including integration, balance, interrelatedness, identity, and systematic approaches were suggested.
This study proposes a self-assessment model and its implementing procedure for the local industry promotion project, the purpose of which is to develop strategies for successful carrying-out of the project by diagnosing carrying capacities of its interested parties. The model, developed principally based on Eckes' $Q{\times}A=E$ Evaluation Model, was applied to 85 project-concerned persons which had been participated in the local industry promotion project from 2009 to 2011. Through the applicability test works of this model, its usefulness and importance for better implementation of the project was ascertained, especially to reflect cultural changes of project actors positively. The actors' recognition level of the project should be one of the critical factors for the successful implementation of the local industry promotion project. So, the higher understanding in the local industry promotion project, the more positive assessment in all respects of the project. Finally, it should be considered that the assessment results might differ for the same assessment standards from assessers' different perspectives.
At the turn of the century in which European colonialism was reaching its zenith and modernization was gathering speed, public museums were institutionalized. This paper looks into the part these European modern museums played in territorializing academic disciplines like anthropology and art history. The museums to deal with are the British Museum and the National Gallery in London, Mus?e du Louvre in Paris, and Museumsinsel in Berlin. Rather than in-depth detailed analysis of each museum, the aim is to explore the ways in which these museological institutions interacting with modern disciplines in the wider colonial context objectified other cultures and formulated a framework of the world through classification and comparison of material things, on the basis of the judgement of their artistic values. This exploration is also to rethink theoretical positions and perspectives on the museum in Korea. It is remarkable in Europe that such academic fields as history, art history, anthropology and cultural studies look for new possibilities of museology in conjunction with the recent proliferation of studies on the museum as a medium to construct and deconstruct knowledge. Meanwhile, the mammoth European museums which are often considered a stronghold of museology advocate the 'universal museum' themselves, quite the modern idea but in a revised rendering. Under these circumstances, this paper seeks to shed light on the definition of the museum as an arena in which scholarly discourses about art, culture and history can be created and contested, on the effectiveness of the museum as a communication medium in a postcolonial era, and on the need to pay trans-disciplinary attention to the museum in its broadest sense.
The faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe is supposed to be concerned not as reminiscence of historical events or legends, but organic product of having nowness. From the perspectives of syncretism the coexistence of heterogeneous elements (Symbiosis) between Catholicism and Aztec's religion has been changed constantly depending on the necessity and function of the subjects who have dreamed the social integration. It's fundamentally clear that the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe is still valid phenomenon in the modern Mexican society and that the faith is an aspect of popular catholicism which includes the remaining elements of the religion of the Aztecs. This is to understand the meanings of the perception of the contemporary mexicans on the phenomenon for the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe. Through in-depth interviews, it is revealed that a high rate of sharing of the information does not mean the proportional acceptance of the history. It's a interesting point to see that the mexicans consider the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe catholic belief, having a feeling of strong tie between themselves and the Aztec's religion. In spite of the historical conflicts over the veracity of St. Mary of Gaudalupe, the majority of the contemporary mexicans consider the faith positive element to consolidate the nationality and socio-cultural identity of $M{\acute{e}}xico$ against the socio-political and ethnic conflicts in the Mexican Society.
