This study examined the effects of previewing and providing background knowledge on low level EFL readers' comprehension of expository texts and their responses to these treatments. 130 college freshmen were randomly placed into one of three treatment groups and read two expository texts reflecting unfamiliar cultural information. Prior to reading, one group was given previewing instruction, which included vocabulary preteaching and summaries, and a second group was provided with culture-specific background knowledge through watching videos and slides. The third group read each text without any prereading instruction. Immediately after reading a passage, subjects answered a 10-item multiple-choice test. Results showed significant positive effects of the previewing treatment and weak positive effects of the providing background knowledge treatment. Students' responses on the questionnaires revealed that the majority felt that the experimental treatments contributed to comprehension enhancement, made reading more enjoyable, and expedited their reading process. Students in the control group, however, indicated that they needed explicit prereading instruction in order to understand the texts. Pedagogical implications of the findings for EFL reading instruction are provided.

As the computer becomes a trend, interactive multimedia design can be one media to communicate the cultural knowledge. A folktale can be a powerful material to show a country's culture. In this project, we try to make the folktale content to be understood easily by implementing some cultural information background. The main aim of this project is to give a vision of the richness culture through the interactive multimedia technology. In this paper, we would like to show a flow map content, a streaming of design process and a visual interface design prototype. Finally, interactive multimedia design content is very useful for a transferring the richness culture because people tend to like a multimedia content. In order to make an effective interactive multimedia design content based on a cultural background, a designer should need to understand about users, culture, technology and the whole design process.

This case study aimed to explore proficient EFL readers' perceptions and experiences about reading tasks and how those perceptions and experiences influence their reading processing behaviors, and to examine how the cultural background of a text affects their reading strategies and comprehension. Three college students who were non-English majors participated in this study. Three data sources were employed: questionnaires, interviews, and think-alouds. The results showed that: (1) the participants emphasized comprehension as the goal of reading and considered themselves good EFL readers; (2) their reading purposes were closely associated with personal pursuits; (3) they preferred to read materials that deal with areas of interest but did not try to take a risk in terms of level of difficulty and/or length; (4) they implemented a multistrategic approach to reading in that the majority of their strategy use was in conjunction with their concern about meaning construction; (5) they were able to develop useful understandings of unknown vocabulary; and (6) their clear awareness of the cultural background presupposed in the text helped them invoke prior knowledge and reduce unknown vocabulary hindrances which contributed to comprehension. Pedagogical implications for EFL reading instruction are provided.

This study is to suggest systematic and effective reading comprehension techniques or strategies to be used in EFL reading classes. According to the definition of reading and reading process, six essential elements of reading comprehension are categorized: 1) reading speed; 2) skimming and scanning; 3) logical organization; 4) pleasure reading; 5) vocabulary; 6) cultural background and world knowledge. To present a more effective teaching and learning approach to EFL reading comprehension than ever, an experiment was performed. The hypothesis of the experimental study was that there would be a difference in students' reading speed as well as reading comprehension and vocabulary between an experimental group and a control group depending upon the teaching approaches (experimental vs. traditional). The result of the study indicates that the experimental teaching approach which intensifies speed reading and pleasure reading techniques as well as 4 other essential techniques of reading comprehension is more effective than the traditional one in teaching and learning reading comprehension.

We have known that ethno-mathematics is a field of a study that emphasizes the socio-cultural environment in which a person "does" mathematics as stated by D'Ambrosio(Ethno mathematics and its Place in the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics, 1985). Measurement is an important mathematical topic, which leads students to relate math to the eal-world applications, particularly with socio-cultural aspects. The purpose of this article is to review the history of the measurement system in Korea briefly and to adapt the measurement system into real-world problems so that children acquire measurement knowledge in the most natural way.

문화적 배경은 사회 구성원이 특정한 방향으로 인지하고 행동하도록 기여하는 역할을 하므로, 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 가진 고객들은 같은 서비스를 제공받아도 각자 다른 반응을 보인다. 호텔 방문객들은 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 가지고 있으므로, 호텔에서 제공되는 서비스나 시설에 대한 인식과 만족도 또한 다르다. 이에 따라 기존 연구에서는 Hofstede 문화차원을 활용하여, 호텔 방문객들의 문화적 배경에 따라 제공되는 서비스에 대한 만족도가 어떻게 달라지는지 파악하였다. 그러나 기존 연구에서는 호텔 방문객들의 문화적 배경만 고려하였으며, 여행 유형까지 고려한 연구는 많지 않은 실정이다. 그러나 많은 선행 연구에서 여행 유형에 따라 중요하게 고려하는 호텔 서비스 속성 요인들은 서로 상이한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 호텔 방문객의 여행 유형을 비즈니스 방문객과 여가 관광여행 방문객으로 분류하고, Hofstede의 문화차원이 호텔 선택속성에 끼치는 영향이 여행 유형에 따른 차이를 분석하였다. 이를 위해, Hofstede의 6가지 문화차원에 대한 정보는 Hofstede insights에서 제공하는 오픈 데이터를 사용하였고, 호텔 선택속성에 대한 만족도는 대표적인 관광 플랫폼인 TripAdvisor에서 뉴욕 호텔에 대한 선택속성 평점 204,261개를 수집하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 향후 호텔에 방문하는 다양한 문화권 고객들이 어떠한 서비스 속성에 더 중점을 두는지를 파악할 수 있고, 그에 적합한 서비스를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

대다수 국가에서 공공도서관은 지역사회를 위한 지식정보 허브, 복합문화공간, 만남과 소통을 위한 제3의 장소로서의 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이를 위한 공공도서관 업무 중에서 요체는 체계적인 장서개발이고, 구축된 장서는 모든 지식정보서비스에 필수적이다. 특히 지역대표도서관은 광역자치단체를 위한 종합지식정보센터로서의 법정 업무를 수행해야 하며 다른 공공도서관이 수행하기 어려운 특화장서를 개발·제공·보존해야 한다. 이에 외국의 대규모 공공도서관과 국내 지역대표도서관의 특화장서 개발 사례를 조사하고 경북지역 공공도서관 직원을 대상으로 특화장서 등에 대한 인식도를 조사하였으며, 경북의 문화지형을 분석하였다. 이들을 배경정보로 삼아 '경북지식문화유산'으로 명명한 경북도서관의 특화장서 개발방안 및 구축전략을 제안하였다.

Background: This study aims at making a survey on health care service providers' cultural competence and making an appraisal of Chinese medical tourists on service quality, health care service providers' cultural competence, perceived value, and satisfaction. Methods: The data was collected from August until November, 2014 and 150 health care service providers and 65 Chinese medical tourists from 12 medical institutions in Daegu were enrolled in analysis. Results: The results showed that health care service provider's knowledge on Chinese culture was very low with 33.5% of correct answer. Health care service providers were found to get 3.82 point on a 5 point-scale in cultural perception, 3.53 points in cultural sensitivity, and 2.85 points in cultural skills. Chinese medical tourists were analyzed to give 4.08 points on a 5-point scale to satisfaction on health care service, followed by 4.01 points to health care service quality, 4.00 points to perceived value of health care service, and last 3.85 points to a health care service providers' cultural skills. However, there was a difference in points in cultural skills between health care service providers and Chinese medical tourists. Chinese medical tourists' satisfaction with health care service in Daegu was found to be comparatively high, but in relation to satisfaction with communication, it was found to be relatively low. Conclusion: Through this research, health care service providers' knowledge level of Chinese culture and cultural skills were low while they seemed to take a half-hearted attitude towards educational experience for building up cultural competence and foreign patient service response.

As the use of cultural elements to enhance design has become increasingly emphasized, fashion studies are focusing more on the cultural aspects of design. However, the diverse approaches of Minhwa (Korean folk painting) still need to be incorporated into fashion designs. Moreover, there is limited research on the awareness and thought of using a cultural design source of Minhwa based on people from different cultural backgrounds. This study aims to reveal an in-depth understanding of the use of Minhwa and its inner symbolic meaning by people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. A review of the literature on cultural design and Minhwa studies was conducted to establish a theoretical foundation. Focus group interviews were conducted with 26 participants, who were divided into five distinct cultural groups to ascertain their thoughts towards Minhwa and its inner symbolic meaning. The study's major findings were threefold. First, the outer appearance of Minhwa elements based on aesthetic preferences and familiarity affect their preference choices more than the influences of their cultural backgrounds. Second, knowing the knowledge of symbolic meaning makes a big difference in image preference. Third, avoiding the use of anachronisms is a significant consideration, as they can lead to negative judgments irrespective of cultural background.

As personal data breach reared up as a problem domestically and globally, organizations appointing chief privacy officers (CPOs) are increasing. Related Korean laws, 'Personal Data Protection Act' and 'the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection, etc.' require personal data processing organizations to appoint CPOs. Research on the characteristics and role of CPO is called for because of the importance of CPO being emphasized. There are many researches on top management's role and their impact on organizational performance using the Upper Echelon theory. This study investigates what influence the characteristics of CPO gives on the organizational privacy performance. CPO's definition varies depending on industry, organization size, required responsibility and power. This study defines CPO as 'a person who takes responsibility for all the duties on handling the organization's privacy,' This research assumes that CPO characteristics such as role, personality and background knowledge have an influence on the organizational privacy performance. This study applies the part relevant to the upper echelon's characteristics and performance of the executives (CEOs, CIOs etc.) for CPO. First, following Mintzberg and other managerial role classification, information, strategic, and diplomacy roles are defined as the role of CPO. Second, the "Big Five" taxonomy on individual's personality was suggested in 1990. Among these five personalities, extraversion and conscientiousness are drawn as the personality characteristics of CPO. Third, advance study suggests complex knowledge of technology, law and business is necessary for CPO. Technical, legal, and business background knowledge are drawn as the background knowledge of CPO. To test this model empirically, 120 samples of data collected from CPOs of domestic organizations are used. Factor analysis is carried out and convergent validity and discriminant validity were verified using SPSS and Smart PLS, and the causal relationships between the CPO's role, personality, background knowledge and the organizational privacy performance are analyzed as well. The result of the analysis shows that CPO's diplomacy role and strategic role have significant impacts on organizational privacy performance. This reveals that CPO's active communication with other organizations is needed. Differentiated privacy policy or strategy of organizations is also important. Legal background knowledge and technical background knowledge were also found to be significant determinants to organizational privacy performance. In addition, CPOs conscientiousness has a positive impact on organizational privacy performance. The practical implication of this study is as follows: First, the research can be a yardstick for judgment when companies select CPOs and vest authority in them. Second, not only companies but also CPOs can judge what ability they should concentrate on for development of their career relevant to their job through results of this research. Cultural social value, citizen's consensus on the right to privacy, expected CPO's role will change in process of time. In future study, long-term time-series analysis based research can reveal these changes and can also offer practical implications for government and private organization's policy making on information privacy.
