  • A strawberry variety 'Arihyang' was derived as an artificial cross between 'Tochiotome' and 'Seolhyang' in 2014. The seedling and line selections were conducted from 2014 to 2015. Preliminary and advanced yield trials of '14-5-5,' which was the final selected line, were conducted from 2015 to 2017. 'Arihyang' is suitable for forced cultivation and has strong plant vigor, uniformly large-sized fruit, and a high yield compared to those of the check variety, 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang.' Especially, vitamin C was at a significant level, which was approximately 15% higher than that of 'Seolhyang.' The average number of flowers per first flower cluster was 10.5, which could reduce the labor of thinning fruit. Its fruit has a conical shape, dark red color, and glossy skin. The fruit was of good quality but has recommendations for harvest at the fully ripened stage. 'Arihyang' has intermediate resistant to phytophthora crown rot, but is susceptible to powdery mildew, gray mold, anthracnose, and fusarium wilt. It is reguired to manage major diseases and pests using optimum cultivation techniques and chemical control.

  • Anther cultivation for crop breeding is a method of rapid production of homozygosities by greatly reducing the time required for at least six generations to develop new varieties using conventional breeding methods. This technique of producing anther culture provides an opportunity to obtain more green plants from a methodological point of view, and the techniques that save time and effort in anther culture are also important because they increase the efficiency of culture. This study compared the callus induction rate and green plant regeneration rate of a one-step and a two-step culture that differ in their culture media and culture methods. One-step culture allows callus induction and plant regeneration in one medium, whereas two-step culture requires induction and plant regeneration in two different media. In this study, we compared the callus induction and plant regeneration rates of rice anthers as one-step and two-step cultures. The callus formation rate was 13.0% for one-step cultures and 8.6% for two-step cultures, so the rate was 4.4% higher for one-step cultures than for two-step cultures. The plant regeneration rate was 1.0% in one-step cultures and 3.0% in two-step cultures, so the regeneration rate was three times higher for the two-step cultures than for one-step cultures. This suggests that the two-step cultures are more efficient than the one-step cultures for haploid production.

  • This study investigated the growth characteristics of Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata treated with different calcium chloride (CaCl2) concentrations to evaluate salt tolerance limits in hydroculture cultivation. Six concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 g·L-1 referred to as Cont., C1, C2, C5, C10, and C15) were applied to solution - grown plant species. The survival rate, growth index, plant height, plant width, leaf width, leaf length, number of leaves, and relative chlorophyll contents were measured at monthly intervals. Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata survived up to C2, C5, and C10 at each CaCl2 concentration. The Euonymus japonicus was higher in the C1 treatment than in the Cont. for most growth characteristics. Hedera helix had the highest leaf width, leaf length, and number of leaves in the Cont., a significant difference was observed compared with the C1 treatment. The chlorophyll content did not differ significantly between the C5 and Cont. treatments. The leaf width and length of Peperomia puteolata were greater in the C2 and C1 treatments than in the Cont., whereas the number of leaves and chlorophyll content were the highest in C5. Dry weight analysis revealed that Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata were the lowest in the Cont. treatments. Euonymus japonicus was 74% in C15, and Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata were analyzed at approximately 37%- 50% and 9%-14%, respectively, regardless of the concentration in the CaCl2 treatment groups. In indoor hydroponic cultivation, the salt tolerance limit concentrations of Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata are 2, 5, and 10 g·L-1, respectively, indicating that hydroculture management techniques should be applied at higher concentrations.

  • Wild ginseng, grown in undisturbed forest environments, has been maintained for centuriesthrough human intervention and knowledge, leading to the development of current ginseng agriculture. The practice of ginseng farming has long been established in various regions of Korea. However, the ginseng farming specifically in Geumsan was recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2018. This designation was granted after a thorough evaluation, which confirmed that Geumsan's ginseng farming met the necessary criteria, including historical importance, traditional knowledge system, agrobiodiversity, and agricultural landscape. Traditional ginseng farming in Geumsan practices the 'rotating agriculture system', a sustainable land use approach that has been developed over several cycles of long duration (10-15 years). It contains the knowledge to choose locations for cultivation that prioritize the direction of sunlight and wind circulation. Furthermore, it received significant recognition for its agricultural heritage value based on its maintenance of several traditional knowledge systems, including ancestral wisdom and knowledge regarding pre-planting field management techniques. As of December 2023, there are currently 86 locations in 26 nations that have been designated as GIAHS. Among these sites, Geumsan stands out as the first and only site in the world specifically recognized for the cultivation of ginseng crops. This historical record serves as a significant reminder of Korea's prominent position as a major producer of ginseng on a global level. This article first provides an overview of the concept of agricultural heritage, the designation criteria, and the status of the designation. It then identifies, among the GIAHS designation criteria, the agricultural heritage value of traditional ginseng farming in the Geumsan region from the perspective of local traditional knowledge systems.

  • Green buckwheat seedlings have been used as a pollution free vegetable and medicinal crop for a long time. Some of the reasons are the rapid growth rate, the high protein and rutincontent, and a more favorable ratio of leaf to stem than mature plants. Off-crop season cultivation techniques were developed for growing the young and green buckwheat vegetable of higher quality and yield, and for its increased value-added income. The effects of planting season, seeding rate, seed bed soil fertility and type, and seedling growth period on yield and rutin content were determined for vegetable and medicinal use. The young vegetable yields. in the off season culture ranged from 2.62t/ha to 22.7t /ha. The highest vegetable yield was 22.7t /ha for 25 days old seedlings grown in the polyethylene film tunnel from March 30 to April 25, 1991 where seedling rate was 360kg /ha. Buckwheat vegetable quality and income were dependent upon planting season, seeding rate, growing duration and temperature, and facilities of raising seedlings. Protein content of buck-wheat seedlings was from 21.5% to 17.2%. Rutin content of the vegetable was 53.9~31.7mg /100g for the whole plant in average. The protein and rutin content was significantly varied due to the different environmental conditions including fertility and type of seed bed soil, growing duration, temperature of the green house, and polyethylene film house and tunnel.

  • Suitable rapeseed cultivation techniques of domestic agriculture are essential for stable security, supply and demand of rapeseed. This research developed a rapeseed seeder for bio-diesel and analyzed the seeding performance improving an existent granule fertilizer applicator. The relational expression of metering groove size and discharge rate per time displayed high correlation with a coefficient of determination of 0.988. Also, the scattering types were analyzed by forwarding speed and discharge rate. Validity application width was decided as 7.0 m by analyzing application uniformity at application widths of 7.6 m, 6.6 m, 5.6 m. All average coefficients of variation values were less than 20%. The best application uniformity was obtained in the condition of a work speed of 1.3 m/s and a sowing rate of 19.0 g/s. It was better average coefficient of variation values under 10% at superposition application of rapeseed seeder. Also, scattering amount rates of right and left were within 0.89${\sim}$1.0.

  • This study was performed to construct killer wine yeasts which might suppress the growth of wild yeasts, reduce the consumption of starter and condense the fermentation period. Saccharomyces cerevisiae M524, a commercial wine yeast, was treated with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine to induce auxotrophic mutants, i.e., CHM $2(thr^-)$, CHM 3 $(asp^-)$ and CHM 6 $(tyr^-)$. These auxotrophs were fused successfully with a killer yeast, S. cerevisiae $1368R({\alpha}\;his\;4\;kar\;1-1(kil-k)\;(k_0)$, respiratory deficient) using sphoroplast techniques and the fusants were designated as CHF 21$(th^-\;kil^+)$, CHF 22$(thr^-\;kil^+)$, CHF 31$(asp^-\;kil^+)$ and GHF 61$(tyr^-\;kil^+)$. Combined cultivation of CHF 31 with 1368R or S. cerevisiae $5{\times}47$ (killer sensitive) proved out that CHF 31 had the characteristic of killing and produced the same amount of ethanol as the prototroph, M524.

  • The study of available genotypes (biodiversity analysis) in bacterial communities is of growing importance in several fields such as ecology, environmental technology, clinical diagnostics, etc. These culture-independent genotyping techniques, especially amplifying 16S rRNA genes, attempt to overcome some shortcomings of conventional cultivation method. Biodiversity analysis based on molecular technique were laborious for base-calling chromatogram, trimming primer sites, correcting strand directions, electing representative operation taxonomic units (OTU), etc. Also, biologists wanted intuitively to confirm results of the above processes. For making up these demands, we developed the web application based on Folder-Process-Filter (FPF) modeling with correspondence to classical Model-View-Controller model. The model of web application leads to keep virtues of simplicity and directness for development and management of the stepwise web interfaces. The web application was developed in Perl and CGI on Linux workstation. It can be freely accessed from http://home.pusan.ac.kr/~genome/tools/rat.htm.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between yearly variations of climatic elements and yearly variations of productivity in sesame. In addition, correlation coefficients among yield and yield components were estimated. The data of yield and yield components were investigated for 10 years from 1992 to 2001. The meteorological data gathered at the Yeosu Weather Station for the same period were used to find out the relationships between climatic elements and productivity. Yearly variation of the amount of precipitation in July and September were large with coefficients of variation(c.v.) of 64.59, 92.47%, respectively, but the variation of the average temperature in June and August were relative small. Yield and plant height greatly with c. v. of 26.24, 23.41 %, respectively, 1, 000 grain weights show more or less c.v. of 3.83% and length capsule setting show still less variation. Correlation coefficients between maximun temperature in period of cultivation(from June to September) and yield are positively significant at the level of 5.1 %, respectively. Correlation coefficients amount the plant height, length capsule setting, number of capsules per plant, weight of 1, 000 grains and seed yield were positively significant at the level of 1 %, respectively. Simple linear regression equations by the least square method are estimated for number of capsules per plant(Y$_1$) and the maximun temperature in August(X) as $Y_1$=10.1255+0.1725X, and for yield(Y$_2$) and the maximun temperature in August(X) as $Y_2$=21.6151 + 1.3724X.
