A New Gerbera Variety 'Yellow Wing' : High-yielding Cultivar with Yellow and Spider type for Cut-flower

  • A new gerbera variety 'Yellow Wing' was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2007. A cross was made between 'Gold Finger' with yellow and single and 'Yellow Springs' with yellow and spider in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics for 4 years (from 2004 to 2007), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. 'Yellow Wing' is a vigorous cultivar with yellow (RHS YO14B), green center and spider type. The flower diameter is 10.6cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter is 2.83cm and 2.03cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height and brilliant color. We believe that 'Yellow Wing' has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income.

  • Over the past few years, a variety of macrocyclic salicylate natural products have been isolated from both terrestrial and marine sources based on their ability to induce a particular phenotype in mammalian cells. Extracts of the myxobacterium Chondromyces showed high cytotoxicity against cultivated mammalian cells and bio-guided fractionation revealed the cytotoxicity was due to one main metabolite identified as the novel macrolide apicularen A. Beginning to understand the molecular basis for these distinct activities will require structure-function correlation studies and the development of synthetic chemistry in this area. (omitted)

Perspectives of Korean Modernity from the 18th Century to the Present: Intellectual Struggles for Koreanity in the Age of Globalization

  • For the effective study of Korean modernization from the 18th century to the present, three areas have been investigated in my paper: the age of dawn in recognizing the necessity of modernism, the era of experimentation from recognition to practice, and the development of modernism in literature: from the 1930s to the present. Through whole process of discussing those matters, Koreanity- identifying itself to be Korean - has been emphasized. While the so-called traditional values confronted with the whole turmoil of socio-political demolitions in the name of modernization, westernization, and culturalization, Korean intellectuals tried to emphasize how important it was to keep Korean identities, namely the Koreanity. Such examples can be seen in the activities of Northern School and Moderate School. Though Koreans had to have a short hair cut in contradiction with their traditional morality to be modernized/westernized/cultivated, it was a turning point for them to take a step toward the international world. During the period of Korean modernization through the impact of Western world, Korean language-hangul- has been cultivated to the highest level in comparison with two foreign languages: Japanese and English. Those Korean linguists who were familiar with these two languages made Korean grammar systematic and they understood the importance of preserving Koreanity in the course of pursuing modem western society. In this sense, Korean modernism is related to the cultural glocalism(globalism+ localism), not to the cultural globalism. Through the help of socio-political modernization, Korean literature in modernism has been full bloomed in the early years of 1930s. One of the leading poets was Sang Lee whose poetic heritage is inherited by those groups of 1950s and I 960s. Among many others, Chunsu Kim and Sunghun Lee were the main figures in realizing the fact the poetry is written in Korean which they considered the body, the soul, and the mother land.

강화 지역의 인삼 재배 역사 (The history of ginseng cultivation in Ganghwa area)

  • 우리나라 한방 의서 중 인삼의 첫 기록은 고려 시대 임시 수도인 강화 도읍기 때 강화도에서 출간된 향약구급방에 나타나 있다. 강화지역에서 인삼재배의 시작은 1100년경부터 시작되었을 것으로 사료 된다. 본격적인 인삼재배 시작은 1920년경 개성인삼조합의 특별구역으로 지정되면서부터였고, 1950년 한국전쟁 시작 때까지 계속되었다. 1953년 휴전 이후부터 강화지역에서 인삼재배가 다시 시작되었다. 1967년에 강화삼업조합이 창립되었으며, 이때 재배 면적이 약 200ha(60만평)이었고, 1974년에 약 900ha(270만평)으로 증가 되었다. 따라서 강화는 1970년대 중반기에 우리나라 전국 시, 군 가운데 인삼재배 면적과 생산량이 가장 높은 지역이였다. 강화지역에서 생산되는 인삼은 주로 6년근이고, 홍삼원료로 사용되어 국내 인삼생산지로 더욱 유명하게 되었고, 그 명성이 현재도 계속되고 있다.

두미도 식물상에 관한 생태학적 연구 (An Ecological Study on the Vegetation of Dumi Island)

  • 본 연구에서 밝혀진 본도의 관속식물류는 66과, 121속, 127종, 16변종, 2품종이고 총 145종류이며 한국의 관속식물(4,191종류; 중정, 1952)의 3.46%에 해당된다. 1945년부터 1960년까지 15년간은 부산, 마산, 충무, 삼천포등지로 연료를 공급하기 위해 많은 나무가 벌채되었으나 연탄의 사용으로 벌채가 중단되고 도내의 임야녹화로 복원되었다. 행정당국의 장려로 곰솔의 식재와 자연번식으로 본도는 곰솔이 우점종으로 나타났다. 상록활엽수는 구전의 서낭당림의 동백나무, 센달나무등의 노수목을 비롯해서 28종이였다. 도내의 중앙에 위치하는 천황산(467m)의 산록지대의 경사지($20{\circ}~30{\circ}$)에 옥수수와 고구마를 주로 가꾸고 있었다. 본도에 분포하고 있는 경제식물은 식용식물 68종, 약용식물 69종, 관상용식물 23종, 공업조자원 1종, 용재자원 15종, 섬유자원 4종, 목초자원 2종, 잡용자원 21종으로 분류되었다.

Managing Soil Organic Matter and Salinity by Crop Cultivation in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land

  • This study was to evaluate the effect of organic amendments incorporation on soil properties and plant growth under two different soil salinity levels and various cultivated crops at Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land for three years from 2012 to 2014. The soil texture of the experimental site was sandy loam. Four different crops, sesbania (Sesbania grandiflora), sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor-Sorghum sudanense), rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) were cultivated at low (< $1dS\;m^{-1}$) and high (> $4dS\;m^{-1}$) soil salinity levels. The soil salinity was significantly lowered at the rice cultivation site compared to continuous upland crops cultivation site in high soil salinity level. But the soil salinity was increased as cultivating sesbania coutinuously in low soil salinity level. The soil organic matter content was increased with the incorporation of straw at the continuous site of rice and barley, and the average of soil organic matter was increased by $0.9g\;kg^{-1}$ per year which was effective in soil aggregate formation. The highest biomass yield plot was found in barley (high salinity level) and sesbania (low salinity level) cultivation site, respectively. Our research indicates that rice cultivation in paddy field with high salinity level was effective in lowering soil salinity and sesbania cultivation was useful to biomass production at upland with low salinity. In conclusion, soil salinity and organic matter content should be considered for multiple land use in newly reclaimed tidal land.

글루티노사오리나무의 생장과 재질 - 종압축 및 휨강도 - (Wood Quality and Growth of Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. in Korea - Compressive and Bending Strength Properties -)

  • 본 연구는 4개 산지(유고슬라비아, 이탈리아, 영국, 불가리아)의 24년생 글루티노사오리나무를 대상으로 종압축 및 휨강도 특성을 규명하고, 또한 이들을 생장속도(평균연륜폭)와의 관계도 규명하였다. 압축강도는 $231{\sim}326kgf/cm^2$의 범위였고, 산지 간 차이를 보였다. 세 개 산지는 생장이 좋을수록 압축강도 및 압축영계수는 저하되는 것으로 나타났으나, Yugoslavia산지는 생장이 가장 좋으면서도 가장 높은 강도 값을 나타냈다. 휨강도는 $426{\sim}727kgf/cm^2$의 범위였고, 산지 간 차이가 있었다. 휨강도는 생장이 좋을수록 강도 및 영계수가 커지는 것으로 나타났다. 종자 산지가 다른 글루티노사오리나무 중 유고슬라비아산이 좋은 수고생장과, 다른 산지의 약 2배의 흉고직경을 나타내며, 압축, 휨강도에서도 가장 우수하여 생장과 재질면을 고려했을 때 현시점에서 가장 우수한 품종으로 판단된다.

답전윤환(畓田輪換) 콩 재배지(栽培地)에서의 잡초발생(雜草發生) 및 방제(防除) (Weed Occurrence and Control at Soybean Culture in Rice-Soybean Rotated Paddy Field)

  • 논을 밭으로 전환(轉換)하여 콩을 파종 재배하였을 때 잡초발생동태 및 효과적인 방제체계를 확립하기 위하여 수행한 일련의 시험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 밭으로 전환시(轉換時) 주요 발생 잡초는 (좀)바랭이, 피, 좀명아주, 속속이풀, 벼룩나물 등이었으며 첫해보다는 2년째에 광엽잡초 특히, 좀명아주, 속속이풀의 발생량이 크게 증가하였으며, 4월 26일 파종구에 비하여 5월 20일에 파종했을 때 잡초의 발생량이 84.8%(건물중 기준) 감소되었다. 2. 무방제(無除草) 방임(放任) 상태(狀態)에서는 콩의 분지수, 주경의 지름, 꼬투리수에 크게 영향을 미치고, 콩의 수량이 70% 감소되었다. 3. 답전윤환 콩재배지에서는 pendimethalin, metolachlor, metolachlor+prometryn, alachlor 처리로 효과적인 잡초방제가 가능하였고 그 중에 metolachlor+prometryn가 가장 우수하였다.

휴경기 후작물 재배에 의한 참외 장기연작 비닐하우스 토양의 제염 효과 (Desalinization Effect of Off-season Crop Cultivation in Long-term Oriental Melon Cultivated Plastic Film House Soils)

  • BACKGROUND: During the off-season, the cultivation of Chinese cabbage and water dropwort is often used to desalinize plastic film house soils. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of double-cropping systems on the salt removal in oriental melon cultivated plastic film house soils.METHODS AND RESULTS: Electrical conductivity (EC) and soluble salt contents were measured in soils collected from plastic film houses of oriental melon cultivation before and after the off-season crop cultivation. Also the same measurements were performed in the next oriental melon season to estimate the desalinization effect of double-cropping systems. During the cultivation of Chinese cabbage under open-field condition, ECeof surface soil was reduced from 6.0 to 0.8 dS/m. Double-cropping of water dropwort in flooded soil was also efficient in removing the salts accumulated during oriental melon cultivation. In the house soils where salts were removed during the off-season crop cultivation, soil ECewas maintained below 3 dS/m during the next oriental melon cultivation season.CONCLUSION: The off-season cropping under open-field or flooded condition was effective in desalinization of plastic film house soils. Since the salt removal effect is not expected to last for several years, the double-cropping system should be introduced every season to maintain soil EC below the critical level.

한국음식에서 참깨와 참기름의 전통적 이용 (A Study of Use of Sesame and Sesame Oil in Traditional Korean Cuisine)

  • It is estimated that sesame spread to Korea about B.C.1000 years and people cultivated sesame and ate sesame-oil age of three-nations. In the Koryo dynasty, sesame was cultivated as the major crop and there were specialists for making sesame oil. The sesame oil was enough for the both upper and lower classes. In the Chosun dynasty, it was introduced widely the method of sesame and deul-sesame (Perilla japonica) cultivation, the way of keeping sesame oil, and how to make sesame oil. Also, there were several ways of making sesame oil; press oil from raw sesame, or from roasting, boiling, and steaming sesame and etc. Even though sesame-oil and sesames were consumed in large quantities to cook Chan (찬 side dishes) and Byung-gwa (병과 Korean traditional dessert), most of common people could not use freely because it was expensive. You-mil-gwa (유밀과) took always a major dishes in the ceremony or party of the royal classes to the ordinary classes in the Chosun dynasty. Sesames and Sesame-oil made a major role in adding flavor to Chan-mul and Coookies in the Korean traditional cuisine. Especially, sesame-oil was consumed a lot to cook You-mil-gwa, You-kwa (유과), You-jeon-byung (유전병 fried rice cake) and Yak-bab (약밥). Roasted sesame and black sesame were used to cook Da-sik (다식), Gang-jung, and rice cake. Sesame oil and sesame was the major part of vegetable dishes such as Na-mul and it was used to add flavor to steamed, roasted and, pan-fried dishes and to roast, fry, and stew food. Heuk-im-ja-jook(black sesame porridge) and Im-ja-su-soup(임자수탕).
