  • Soybean has been cultivated in China for 5,000 years. The soybean cyst neamtode (SCN), Heterodra glycines, was recongnized in Northeastern China in 1899. Currently, it is known to occur in 12 provinces. The biology of SCN was investigated in several provinces. Six races of SCN were identified (race 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7). About f10,000 soybean germplasm lines were evaluated for their resistance to race 1, 3, 4 and 5 of SCN. At least two black-seeded cultivars are resistant to all four races. Several tolerant soybean cultivars with yellow seed coat were released and are in production. Additional resistant cultivars are being developed. Nematicides were not applied in production Potential biocontrol agents and related aspects are being investigated.

  • This study was intended to estimate the soil runoff at the basin of Mandaechun where the measure needs to be taken to deal with the increasing muddy water resulting from soil runoff during wet season and torrential rain at the high reaches of the Soyang lake where highland vegetables are cultivated and soil replacement for improvement is carried out every two to three years. The study was carried out in such a way of identifying the topographic factors using geographical spatial data from Water Management Information System (WAMIS) and ARC-VIEW program and estimating the soil runoff by rainfall frequency using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), and furthermore, evaluating the soil runoff contribution at the basin of Mandaechun based on estimate of the soil runoff by section.

  • Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is an important fruit and cash crop in Sultanate of Oman, occupying nearly 60% of the total cultivated area. However, leaf spots caused by Mycosphaerella tassiana, Alternaria spp., and Dreshcleri sp. have become a threat to date palm's cultivation in recent years. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to find out a suitable chemical spray program to control the disease. A prophylactic spray schedule with mancozeb (Dithane M45), copper oxychloride (Champion), and mancozeb+copper (Trimiltox) effectively controlled the disease when applied at a time when the disease severity index (DSI) was low, ranging from 0 to 1.68. Meanwhile, the disease did not decrease, but instead increased gradually, when the fungicide combination was applied when DSI was high, ranging from 1.78 to 5.37. It was concluded that fungicides should be applied at the early stage or before disease initiation in order to control the disease effectively.

  • The green marine algae, Capsosiphon fulvescens has been cultivated in south coast of southern Korea for many years on a commercial scale. This species is very popular in Korean as a food supplement because of its attractive flavor and flexcible taste. It is, therefore, necessary to isolate and utilize qualified germplasms for mass production of this economic seaweed. Several reports have been published on phycological applications of RAPDs including the characterization of interspecific genetic variation, the identification of isolates and hybrids, and the study of phylogenetic relationships. However few authors have used RAPDs to assess the genetic variability among populations of a seaweed species(van Oppen et al., 1994; Alberto et al., 1997). The present study was undertaken for characterizing the identities of Capsosiphon fulvescens populations cultivating in Korea through the analysis of PCR based random amplified polymorphic DNAs (Welsh and MacClelland, 1990; Willams et al., 1990) and chemical composition aimed to isolate the useful strains for aquaculture. • A cultivation of Pleurotus spp. on tree-stumps and logs, was first described at the beginning of the twentieth century. Now Pleurolus spp. is the most popular mushrooms in Korea. Especially, P. ostreatus has been cultivated for many years since artificial cultivation methods were developed in 1980's. Its productivity occurring almost 32% in Korea. To find the vision of mushroom research, the beginning and history of Pleurolus spp. cultivation were introduced worldwide based on Journal of Mushroom Science. The important innovation and history in cultivation were also discussed in Korea.

  • Mt. Jiri located in the southwestern part of Korea is a treasure trove of wild medicinal plants. More than 1200 species currently classified as herbs are grown or cultivated in the area. Recently, safflower has attracted interest because of its ability to control fine wrinkle formation on the neck. The objective of this study therefore was to determine whether the active ingredient of safflower could be used in the form of an extract to reduce wrinkle formation in individuals aged 30 to 59 years. In particular, this study was aimed at determining the extract’s elastase activity and anti-oxidant effect by using DPPH assay in vitro and evaluating the anti-wrinkle efficacy of different types of safflower extracts in improving fine wrinkles on the neck. This study will provide a basis for future studies to develop safflower extracts using advanced composition technology and contribute to the development of the herbal cosmetics industry.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate a specific character on products of American-cotton(Kobong) with cultivated in Sinbong-dong, Sangju City from 1997 to 2003 years. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The Kobong cotton of producted in Sangju city was superior in quality than Korean-cotton. 2. The cotton producted in 1998, 2002 and 2003 was inferior in quality than the anther producted cotton. The reasons was a heavy rain at 1998, Rusa typhoon at 2002 and Maemi typhoon at 2003 in sangju city. But Kobong-cotton was superior in quality than the Korean-cotton. Since it is so, Kobong(New improved variety of American-cotton) was superior in quality than the another kinds(Korean-cotton) from producted of cotton fibers

  • The rhizome rot of ginger, caused by fusarium oxysporum f.zingiberi, gives a great deal of damages to the ginger farming in Korea. Main symptoms to the disease include the yellowing and blighting of the stems as the rotting of rhizomes. The infection rate was 20 percent in Bongdong, Jeonbug, whereas 10 percent in Susan, Chungnam. The rate was higher at the farm where gingers had been cultivated for many years. To control the disease, soil fungicides Dowfum MC-2 and Tolene C-17 were turned out to be more effective than Di-Trapex nad Daconil. Treatment of Benlate to the rhizome pieces, which were cut for propagation, also showed a better result as compared with that of Othocide. Dual treatment of both Dowfum MC-2 or Tolene C-17 to the farm soil and Benlate to the rhizome pieces was recommended for the best chemical control.

  • Garlic (Alium sativum L.), originated in the Kirghiz region of Central Asia, is oneof the oldest cultivated plants. It has reached Europe via Egypt in the days of Pharaohs. Since then, the legendary medicinal properties attributed to garlic have attracted human interests for thousands of years. However, the research on the medicinal effect of garlic, mostly on this anticarcinogenic actions has been systematically performed only for the last tow or three decades. Many researches have proven that garlic inhibits neoplasia elicited by chemical carcinogens using in vitro or in vivo experimental systems. Attention has recently been focused on assessing the therapeutic or chemopreventive measures of garlic compounds against carcinogenesis in animals. The active principles of he garlic extract, mainly the sulfur compounds and their derivatives have been deeply scrutinized into their chemical, functional and medicinal properties.

  • A new gerbera variety "Pink Swan" was released by the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) in 2007. A cross was made between "Royal" with orange and single and 'Himalaya' with white and semi-double in 2004. After investigation of the characteristics for 4 years (from 2004 to 2007), it was selected specially for the use of cut-flower. "Pink Swan" is a vigorous medium-sized cultivar with pink (RHS R48D), yellow green center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 10.6 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter is 5.99cm and 1.83cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that "Pink Swan" has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivar and increasing farmers-income.
