  • Culm cutting is very effective and convenient method for asexual propagation and even much less destructive than the other ways such as excavation of rhizomes. Despite that culm cutting is such a useful method, only few investigations for raising its efficiency have been carried out. We tried to examine the effect of different geographical populations and cutting sections on the shoot emergence, biomass production and its allocation in terms of cutting efficiency. Culms were sampled from three environmentally distinct wetlands : riparian marsh, salt marsh and montane fen and then they were cut separately into four sections from the bottom to the top part. Both factors of different population and section affected the shoot emergence together. Middle parts on the culm always showed more shoot emergence irrespective of different population. On the other hand, first section from salt marsh and fourth section from the montane fen did not exhibit any shoot emergence. Significant difference in increase of shoot emergence between different sections during investigation period was confirmed only from salt marsh population. Not only different population but also appropriate cutting section should be considered together for better efficiency in cutting of reed culms.

  • Tachioside (4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl-1-O-glucoside), a known phenolic glycoside, was isolated from various bamboo species. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity determined a significant antioxidant activity of tachioside which was comparable to L-ascorbic acid. Each culm and leaf extracts were tested and the culm of Phyllostachys bambusoides appeared to contain the highest amount of tachioside.

  • Background: To understand shade and wind effects on seedling traits of common reed (Phragmites australis), we conducted a mesocosm experiment manipulating day length (10 h daytime a day as open canopy conditions or 6 h daytime a day as partially closed canopy conditions) and wind speed (0 m/s as windless conditions or 4 m/s as windy conditions). Results: Most values of functional traits of leaf blades, culms, and biomass production of P. australis were higher under long day length. In particular, we found sole positive effects of long day length in several functional traits such as internode and leaf blade lengths and the values of above-ground dry weight (DW), rhizome DW, and total DW. Wind-induced effects on functional traits were different depending on functional traits. Wind contributed to relatively low values of chlorophyll contents, angles between leaf blades, mean culm height, and maximum culm height. In contrast, wind contributed to relatively high values of culm density and below-ground DW. Conclusions: Although wind appeared to inhibit the vertical growth of P. australis through physiological and morphological changes in leaf blades, it seemed that P. australis might compensate the inhibited vertical growth with increased horizontal growth such as more numerous culms, indicating a highly adaptive characteristic of P. australis in terms of phenotypic plasticity under windy environments.

  • To find the varietal differences of the protein accumulation in rice kernel. three rice varieties were planted under the conditions of different planting dates and different nitrogen levels. Samples of leaf blade, culm and rice grain were obtained at 10 day intervals during grain development period, and analyzed by the kjeldahl method for nitrogen content. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The nitrogen contents in leaf and culm were decreased as the grain development progresses. Varietal differences were found in the change of the nitrogen contents in leaf and culm. IR lines, high protein lines, reduced rapidly as the grain development progresses, but Jinheung, a leading variety in central region of Korea, showed slow decline. 2. Heavy nitrogen fertilizer application increased the nitrogen contents in the leaf and culm. Varietal differences were also found. IR lines showed higher increase than the Jinheung. 3. The protein content in brown rice were decreased as the ripening progresses to the maturity. Varietal differences were noticed in the declining trend of the protein content in brown rice. IR lines showed less changes than Jinheung and finally Jinheung showed low protein content than IR lines at maturity stage. 4. Increased nitrogen fortilizer application raised strikingly the protein content of brown rice in the IR lines but much less in the Jinheung.

  • The proposed hypothesis that the effects of climatic factors during ripening period (from 10 days before heading to 30 days after heading) on ripened grain ratio are equal on the level of canopy and on the level of tiller in that canopy of rice plant appeared to be agreeable. The followings were found according to the analysis of ripening structure at tiller level. 1. The optimum ripening temperature (mean air temperature during ripening period) was $21^{\circ}C$ for Jinheung and $22^{\circ}C$ for IR667-Suwon 214. 2. The minimum mean solar radiation ($cal\;cm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) of ripening period was not greater than 240 for Jinheung and greater than 270 for IR 667-Suwon 214. 3. The ripened grain ratio was not different from main culm to first tillers of second order of main culm in Jinheung but greatly decreased from 4th tiller of first order of main culm in IR667 and the number of grain per main culm was greater in IR667 than in Jinheung indicating that yield of IR667 could be increased by increasing the number of main culm. 4. The last heading date insuring optimum ripening period appeared to be 25th in August for Jinheung and 30th in August for IR667 in Suweon.

  • Mechanical properties of rice plants were tested to determine compressive force, bending force, tensile force and shear force for improvement of harvesting machines and for efficient utilization of rice culm during the proper harvesting period. Rice varieties used in this study were two Japonica varieties with Irri 348 and Jinju, and two $Indica{\times}Japonica$ hybrids with Seogwang and Taebaeg, which were grown in the standard fertilization field of Chungnam Rural Development Office. Also Jinju and Taebaeg were tested to elucidate the shearing characteristics which included shear force-strain relationship, shear force and shear energy according to the position from the ground level, the shearing angle to the rice culm, and the moisture content. 1. Compressive force, bending force, tensile force and shear force were higher In Japonica varieties than $Indica{\times}Japonica$ hybrids. 2. Shear force to overall culm length decreased progressively to upper positions in Jinju variety but a constant shear force was approximately showed between the ground level and the position of 21cm in Taebaeg variety. 3. Shear force and shear energy increased with increase of the cross sectional area, and the rates of increase were high in general up to the cross sectional area of $10mm^2$ and then they became dull very much. 4. Shear force and shear energy decreased with decrease of moisture content of rice culm after cutting up to the moisture content of 60% (w. b.) and then they did not change significantly.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate variation of physical characteristics of the culm related to lodging resistance by nitrogen levels under direct seeding on flooded paddy surface. The number of seedling per m$^2$ were from 103 to 110 plants, and seedling ratios were ranged from 66.7% to 71.2%. The lodging occurrence were increased in order to the nitrogen levels 15 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg /10a, and the lodging resistant varieties ; Dongjinbyeo and Cheongmyungbyeo showed less values of field lodging than those of lodging susceptible varieties ; Daecheongbyeo, Palgongbyeo and H waseongbyeo. The lodging resistance was decreased in semidwarf varieties compare with long culm varieties, but Dongjinbyeo, long culm variety has lodging resistance. The occurrence of lodging decreased with lower values in top moment, but with higher values in the breaking moment with leaf sheath. The root dry weight positively correlated with weight of culm base, but modulus of section was negatively correlated with bending curvature, respectively.

  • An experiment was carried out to know the effects of paclobutrazol application time on the lodging related traits and yield of a rice variety. Seomjinbyeo, at two nitrogen leveles. Paclobutrazol (3kg 10a of 0.6% G) was applied 43, 33, 23, and 13 days before heading (DBH) and lodging related traits were observed 10, 20, 30, and 40 days after heading (DAH). Earlier applications of paclobutrazol reduced the length of lower internodes and later applications reduced the upper internodes. Culm length tended to decrease as time of paclobutrazol application delayed. Although lodging was not occurred in all plots. lodging index of paclobutrazol treated plots was lower than that of control and increased with maturity, Fresh weight of shoot increased up to 30 DAH and then decreased. Both fresh weight and breaking strength did not show consistent tendency with time of paclobutrazol application and observation. Direct effect of shoot fresh weight contributing to lodging index decreased with maturity. but that of breaking strength and culm length was similar during the ripening stages. Direct effect contributing to lodging index was greater in the order of breaking strength culm length. and fresh weight 40 DAH. Starch content of culm base decreased up to 20 DAH and then increased up to 40 DAH. Cellulose content increased up to 20 DAH, but hemicellulose and lignin did not change significantly during the ripening stages. Starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents of culm base did not correlated with breaking strength and time of paclobutrazol application did not show consistent results. Paclobutrazol applied 13 DBH did not reduce yield of rice. but the earlier applications reduced yield due to a reduced number of spikelets per panicle.

  • In this study, we conducted to identify predictive parameters affecting the head rice ratio for developing high quality rice cultivar adaptable to the early-transplanting cultivation. The recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population from a cross between the parents of Pungmi and Koshihikari was used for test materials. Variations were observed in most of the measurements, eg culm length (ranging from 51.0 cm to 97.0 cm), amylose content (14.0~20.1%), protein content (5.2~7.4%), pasting properties (peak viscosity, 227.2~309.8 RVU) and head rice ratio (67.7~96.7%). Significant correlations between head rice ratio versus culm length (0.443) and head rice ratio versus protein content (-0.458) were detected in RIL population. However, culm length was negatively related to lodging tolerance. In order to develop a commercially suitable cultivar, selection for short culm and high head rice ratio of rice grains with physiochemical properties such as protein content, amylase content and taste value should be considered. This results can be used to increase the efficiency of breeding program for developing a new early-maturing rice variety adaptable to early transplanting cultivation in Korea.

  • For selection of mutants two rice varieties, Sangpungbyeo and Seomjinbyeo, were irradiated with 20 kR and 25 kR of gamma rays. One panicle per each plant was harvested in Ml, and single needling per hill was planted for M2 and M3 generations. Mutations for short culm, earliness and the major traits were examined. 1. The mutation rates were varied with the rice varieties and the doses of radiation, higher in Sangpungbyeo and 25kR than in Seomjinbyeo and 20 kR, respectively. 2. The rates in Sangpungbyeo with the 20 kR and 25 kR were 1.10% and 1.47%. respectively and those of Seomjinbyeo were 0.51% and 1.25%, respectively. 3. The culm lengths of short-culm mutants derived from Sangpungbyeo and Seomjinbyeo were reduced about 10% compared to their mother varieties, especially it was possible to select the dwarf mutants reducing 57% and 40% of culm length in Sangpungbyeo and Seomjinbyeo, respectively with the dose of 25 kR irradiation. 4. The range of heading date of the mutant ion in the M3 generation was comparatively wide. Many earliness mutants shortened about 7 days were selected as compared with their mother varieties, some mutants of the irradiated group had early matured by 20 days and 30 days, respectively in both Seomjinbyeo and Sangpungbyeo.
