  • Abstract The principal factor affecting the increased penetration of photovoltaics into the marketplace is cost. For traditional crystalline silicon modules, half of the cost is that of the silicon wafers. As a result much effort has centered on reducing this cost by the use of thin film technologies. Substantial technical progress has been made towards improving the efficiencies of polycrystalline thin film solar cells to reduce the production costs. Progress in semiconductor deposition techniques has also been rapid. The most mature of these are based on polycrystalline silicon (p - Si), amorphous silicon (a - Si), copper indium diselenide $SuInSe_2$(CIS), and cadmium telluride (CdTe). This paper explores the recent advances in the development of polycrystalline thin film solar cells.

  • We have now constructed a novel recombinant baculovirus producing fusion protein with Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) polyhedrin and Bacillus thuringiensis(Bt) cryIA(c) crystal protein. The fusion protein expressed by the recombinant baculovirus in insect cells was characterized. The N-terminal of cryIA(c) gene of Bt subsp. kurstaki HD-73 was introduced under the control of polyhedrin gene promoter of AcNPV, by fusion in the front of intact polyhedrin gene or by insertion into the HindIII site in polyhedrin gene. The recombinant baculoviruses were named as BtrusI or BtrusII, respectively. Although single transcript from the fusion protein gene was apparently observed. BtrusI was produced the two proteins, 92 kDa fusion protein and only polyhedrin. In addition, fusion protein produced by BtrusI did not form polyhedra. Interestingly, however, the cells infected with BtrusII did not show a 33 kDa polyhedrin band as a cells infected with BtrusI. Cells infected with BtrusII were only produced fusion protein, but the polyhedra formed by fusion protein was not observed. To determine the insecticidal toxicity of fusion protein, therefore, Sf9 cells infected with BtrusI were inoculated to Bombyx mori larvae. Sf9 cells infected with BtrusI that expressed the fusion protein caused larval mortality although the insecticidal toxicity was low. In conclusion, our results clearly demonstrated that the fusion protein with polyhedrin and Bt cryIA(c) crystal protein have a insecticida toxicity.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) effects on physical properties of the liquid crystal and twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) cells have been investigated. The minute doping of CNTs reduces rotational viscosity of the LC, and thus switching time of the TN cells is improved, especially in grey scale response time. In addition, the dielectric anisotropy and birefringence are not affected by such a small amount of CNT-doping and thus voltage-dependent transmittance remains the same.

  • The structure of a single crystal, grown by a slow cooling a melt of $Ca_{1.29}Bi_{0.14}VO_4$ composition, was analyzed. The crystals belong to the rhombohedral space group R3c and the dimensions of the unit cells are a = 10.848(1)${\AA}$, c = 38.048(6)${\AA}$, V = 3877.6(8)${\AA}^3$ for the pale yellow crystal, and a = 10.857(1), c = 38.063(6)${\AA}$, V = 3885.6(8)${\AA}^3$ for the yellow crystal, respectively. Unit cell dimensions of the crystal were larger than those of the host crystal, $Ca_3(VO_4)_2$, owing to the Bi that replaced Ca in the unit cell. Ca in the unit cell formed six, eight and nine coordinated polyhedra with O atoms and Bi replacing Ca entered the eight or nine coordinated Ca sites with different crystallographic environments in the unit cell. All the V in the unit cell formed four coordinated tetrahedra with O atoms, however V-O bond lengths in the tetrahedra were different from one another.

  • Most modeling about dynamic behavior of Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal (AFLC) is limited to the hysteric characteristics of AFLC cells or thresholdless switching of frustrated AFLC cells. In this paper, domain growth of AFLC cells is modeled with extended bilayer model. When driving pulses that consist of a selection voltage, a bias voltage, and a reset voltage are applied to the AFLC cell, its dynamic behavior is simulated.

  • Thin film solar cells are growing up in the market due to their high efficiency and low cost. Especially CdTe and $CuInGaSe_2$ based solar cells are leading the other cells, but due to the limited percentage of the elements present in our earth's crust like Tellurium, Indium and Gallium, the price of the solar cells will increase rapidly. Copper Zinc Tin Sulfide (CZTS) and Copper Zinc Tin Selenide (CZTSe) semiconductor (having a kesterite crystal structure) are getting attention for its solar cell application as the absorber layer. CZTS and CZTSe have almost the same crystal structure with more environmentally friendly elements. Various authors have reported growth and characterization of CZTSe films and solar cells with efficiencies about 3.2% to 8.9%. In this study, a novel method to prepare CZTSe has been proposed based on selenization of stacked Copper Selenide ($Cu_2Se$), Tin Selenide ($SnSe_2$) and Zinc Selenide (Zinc Selenide) in six possible stacking combinations. Depositions were carried out through RF magnetron sputtering. Selenization of all the samples was performed in Close Space Sublimation (CSS) in vacuum at different temperatures for three minutes. Characterization of each sample has been performed in Field Emission SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, EDS and Auger. In this study, the properties and results of $Cu_2ZnSnSe_4$ thin films grown by selenization will be presented.

  • The characteristics of the response time and the viewing angle on twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display (LCD) and amorphous (a)-TN-LCD without rubbing were investigated. To measure the tansmission-voltage, response time, and viewing angle characteristics, we prepared three kinds of LC cells and then studied the surface liquid crystal alignment effect. It was found that the response time on A-TN-LCD was fast compared to the TN-I-CD, and the weak anchoring strength was attributed to the fast response time on a-TN-LCD. Also, we obtained the wide viewing angle characteristics on a-TN-LCD. The liquid crystal alignment of LCD device for electro-optical characteristics is discussed in the present paper.

  • The present buried contact (BC) solar cell research at SAIT includes the development of a processing sequence suitable for production of the single sided (SS) BC solar cells. This paper presents some results for large area ($45cm^{2}$) SSBC cells fabricated on FZ and CZ silicon substrates. Cell efficiencies in excess of 18% fabricated on FZ, p-type, 0.5 ohm-cm, and over 16% on CZ p-type, 10~20 ohm-cm, wafers have been demonstrated. Both the FZ and CZ wafers were chemically textured. These results are preliminary and the exploration of double sided (DS) sequence, which is the future BC structure would lead to over 17% and 20% efficiency cells on CZ and FZ substrates respectively. The cost of solar cells can be reduced further if the many high temperature steps can be reduced to only one. This would be very advantageous to very poor quality substrates such as the CZ grown wafers.

  • We have now constructed a novel recombinant baculovirus Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) producing polyhedra with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) CryIAc crystal protein. The recombinant polyhedra produced by the recombinant baculovirus, Btrus, in insect cells was characterized. The recombinant baculovirus has two independent transcription units in opposite orientations with two promoters, p10 or polyhedrin gene promoter each initiating transcription of either native polyhedrin or fusion protein with polyhedrin and Bt Cry1Ac crystal protein. Surprisingly, this recombinant baculovirus stably produced recombinant polyhedra which were nearly similar to those of wild-type AcNPV. The immunogold staining experiment showed that the recombinant polyhedra were assembled with polyhedrin and Bt Cry1Ac crystal protein, and contained virus particles. Insecticidal toxicity of recombinant polyhedra of Btrus to the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, was strikingly improved in comparison with the wild-type AcNPV.

  • A number of soil and wastewater samples were collected from the vicinity of an effluent treatment plant for the chemical industry. Several microorganisms were screened fur their ability to decolorize the triphenylmethane group of dyes. As a result, a novel crystal violet dye-degrading strain LK-24 was isolated. Taxonomic identification including 16S rDNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate had a $99.5\%$ homology in its 16S rDNA base sequence with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The triphenylmethane dye, crystal violet, was degraded extensively by growing cells of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia LK-24 in agitated liquid cultures, although their growth was strongly inhibited in the initial stage of incubation. This group of dyes is toxic, depending on the concentration used. The dye was significantly degraded at a relatively lower concentration, below $100{\mu}g\;ml^-1$, yet the growth of the cells was totally suppressed at a dye concentration of $250{\mu}g\;ml^-1$. The degradation products of crystal violet were identified as 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino)-benzophenone and ${\rho}$-dimethylaminophenol by Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry. The 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino)-benzophenone was easily obtained in a reasonable yield, as it was not metabolized further by S. maltophilia LK-24; however, the ${\rho}$-dimethylaminophenol was not easily identifiable, as it was further metabolized.
