Duality of Photonic Crystal Radiative Structures and Antenna Arrays

  • In this paper, behaviors of photonic crystal (PC) radiative structures and antenna arrays have been compared for two types of uniform and binomial excitations. Appropriate duality has been shown between them. These results can be generalized to other types of excitation and arrangement of photonic crystal radiative arrays such as linear, planar and circular arrays of three dimensional (3D) photonic crystal termination resonators. Using these results in designing photonic circuits has some advantages for shaping a particular radiative beam at the photonic crystal exit, for instance reducing the divergence angle of the main lobe in order to enhance the directivity, for better coupling, or for splitting the emitted beam, for dividing the output beam to the next devices in photonic integrated circuits (PIC). For analysis and simulation of the photonic crystal structures, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method has been employed.

항만센서용 수정진동자의 해수에 의한 부식 (Corrosion of Quartz Crystal Marine Sensors in Sea Water)

  • A quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to monitor the corrosion process of an aluminum surface of a quartz crystal for marine sensor by sea water. A quartz crystal having 2000 $\AA$ of aluminum layer is installed in a specially designed cell and is in contact with sea water imitated electrolyte solution. While a constant potential is applied to the cell, the resonant frequency and resonant resistance are simultaneously measured using the quartz crystal analyzer. In addition, surface topographs are taken with an atomic force microscope(AFM) and the element analysis of the surface is conducted using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDX). The simultaneous measurement of resonant frequency and resonant resistance during the corrosion process explains the change of surface structure caused by the corrosion. The variation of resonant frequency addresses the amount surface metal dissolution. As a conclusion, it is found that a simple measurement using the quartz crystal analyzer can replace the complex monitoring employing large equipments in the investigation of a corrosion process of sensor surface.

A Theoretical Study of a Z-DNA Crystal: Structure of Counterions, Water and DNA Molecules

  • To study the effect of solvents and counterions in Z-DNA crystal of d(5BrC-G-5BrC-G-5BrC-G), we performed the local energy analysis and then molecular dynamics simulations. Since counterions raise serious caging problems in crystal simulations, it is very important to search for the possible positions before simulations. For this purpose, the local energy analysis was done for the whole crystal volume. It is shown from our simulation that counterions along with water molecules play a bridging role to bind adjacent oligomers so as to form the crystal. In this crystal, each water molecule bound to Gua-N2H, either directly or indirectly, hydrates the adjacent anionic phosphate oxygen, and thus assists Gua to be in a syn position. From the simulation, the average root-mean-square deviation of allthe DNA heavy atom coordinates from the X-ray data is $0.99{\AA}$ . The bases are less deviated from the X-ray positions than the phosphates. The temperature factors from the simulation are consistent with those from the X-ray refinement, showing that the phosphates are more mobile than the bases.

Analysis of lenticular 3D liquid crystal displays using 3D pixel simulator

  • In this paper, an accurate ray-tracing based visual analysis method of lenticular 3D liquid liquid crystal display (LCDs) and some analysis results are presented. In the developed method, the geometric optics analysis is performed on the single 3D unit pixel of 3D lenticular LCD. It is shown that the display characteristics of 3D lenticular LCD panels of arbitrary size can be evaluated through the 3D unit pixel analysis. The analysis results of a few representative structures of 3D lenticular LCDs are compared.

  • Two crystal forms of ziprasidone have been isolated by recrystallization from different organic solvents and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffractometry and thermogravimetric analysis. It was confirmed that Form 2 has the same crystal structure as Form 1.

  • Invisible charged clusters are suggested to form in the gas phase and to become the growth unit in the thin film process. Similar suggestion had been made by Glasner el al. in the crystal growth of KBr and KCL in the solution where the lead ions were added. The charged cluster model, which was suggested in the diamond CVD process by our group, will be extended to the other thin film processes. It will be shown based on both the theoretical analysis and the experimental evidences that the charged clusters are formed in the gas phase and become the growth unit of the crystal in the thin film process.

  • 사파이어 단결정은 GaN계 화합물 증착이 용이하여 고휘도 LED(Light Emitting Diode), 고출력 레이저 산업 등에서 크게 각광받고 있다. 다양한 사파이어 단결정 제조공법 중 vertical Bridgman 공법은 고품질의 사파이어를 c-축 방향으로 성장시킬 수 있는 공법이며 상업적으로 적용이 검토되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 2인치 사파이어 성장 vertical Bridgman 공정에서 성장시 온도구배에 의해 발생하는 열응력을 유한요소 모델을 통해 분석하였다. 이를 통해 성장시 수직, 수평방향으로의 온도구배가 사파이어 결정의 열응력과 결함발생에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다.

X선 산란분석법을 이용한 액정에멀젼 구조분석 (Structure Analysis of Liquid Crystal Emulsions Using X-ray Scattering Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 $C_{12-20}$ 알킬글루코사이드, $C_{14-22}$ 알코올 및 베헤닐알코올로 구성된 액정에멀젼을 제조하고 다양한 분석장비를 이용하여 구조분석을 실시하였다. 먼저 제조한 액정에멀젼을 편광현미경과 cryo-SEM을 이용하여 각각 액정에멀젼의 특징인 maltese cross 무늬와 다층 구조를 확인하였다. 또한, DSC를 이용하여 액정상 형성을 확인하였고, small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) 분석을 통하여 약 $305{\AA}$의 층간 간격을 갖는 다층 라멜라 구조를 확인하였다. 한편, wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) 분석을 통해 제조된 액정에멀젼의 라멜라 구조를 이루고 있는 알킬 사슬 간 배열이 사방정계 구조로 되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 액정에멀젼 구조 연구를 통해 얻어진 다양한 물성 정보는 향후 산업적으로 많이 이용될 것으로 기대된다.

Synthesis and structure analysis of the bis(dicyclohexylammonium) chromate dihydrate complex, [(C6H11)2NH2]2[CrO4]·2H2O

  • A new bis(dicyclohexylammonium) chromate dihydrate complex, $[(C_6H_{11})_2NH_2]_2[CrO_4]{\cdot}2H_2O$, (I), has been synthesized and its structure analyzed by FT-IR, EDS, elemental analysis, ICP-AES, and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Cr(VI) complex (I) is tetragonal system, I${\bar{4}}$2d space group with a = 12.5196(1), b = 12.5196(1), c = $17.3796(3){\AA}$, a = ${\beta}$ = ${\gamma}$ = $90^{\circ}$, V = $2724.09(6){\AA}^3$, Z = 4. The crystal structure of complex (I) consists of tetrahedral chromate $[CrO_4]^{2-}$ anion, two organic dicyclohexylammonium $[(C_6H_{11})_2NH_2]^+$ cations and two lattice water molecules. The chromate anion and protonated dicyclohexylammonium cation is mainly constructed through the ionic bond. The cyclohexylammonium rings of the dicyclohexylammonium cation take the chair form and vertical configuration with each other. The N-H${\cdot}$O and O-H${\cdot}$O hydrogen bond networks between the $N_{dicyclohexylammonium}$, $O_{water}$ and $O_{chromate}$ atom lead to self-assembled molecular conformation and stabilize the crystal structure.

Czochralski법으로 성장된 RE : YAG(RE = Nd3+, Er3+) 단결정의 결함분석 (Defects analysis of RE : YAG (RE = Nd3+, Er3+) single crystal synthesized by Czochralski method)

  • RE : YAG 단결정은 레이저 발진 소재로 다양한 성장 변수를 제어하면서 Czochralski법으로 성장된다. 성장과정 동안 고액계면의 온도구배 및 회전속도에 의해 발생하는 결함들은 결정의 광학적 특성 저하로 작용하기 때문에 결함 분석을 통한 결정 품질의 향상을 필요로 한다. 격자결함 밀도 분석(EPD)을 통하여 성장된 RE : YAG 단결정의 표면 결함 존재를 확인하였고, 이를 통해 투과전자현미경(TEM) 분석영역을 선택하였다. 선택한 영역의 시편은 트라이포드 연마 방법으로 제작하였고, 200 kV 투과전자현미경과 300 kV 전계 방사형 투과전자현미경(FE-TEM)을 사용하여 buckling, rod shaped, 내부응력에 의한 bend contours, 편석 등의 결함들을 관찰하였다.
