  • In this study, a fundamental experiment was carried out to investigate the frost formation on a cryogenic flat plate with/without temperature distribution from 230K to 160K under the convective flow. The effects of mixing ethanol as a condensable substance were also researched. From the test results, when surface temperature at the upstream is 230K, mass flux is high. On the other hand, when surface temperature at the downstream is 160K, mass flux is low. The degree of improvement to restrain frost formation by ethanol mixing is relatively larger at the upstream than at the downstream.

  • Cryoablation device is a surgical instrument to produce the cooling effect to destroy detrimental biological tissue by utilizing low temperature around 110 K. Usually, this device has the concentrated cooling region, so that it is suitable for concentrated and thick target. Accordingly, it is hard to apply this device for the target which is distributed and thin target. In this study, the design procedure of a closed-loop cryoablation device with multiple J-T expansion part is developed for the treatment of incompetent of great saphenous vein. The developed cyoablation device is designed with the analysis of 1-dimensional (1-D) bio-heat equation. The energy balance is considered to determine the minimum mass flow rate of refrigerant for consecutive flow boiling to develop the uniform cooling temperature. Azeotropic mixed refrigerant R410A and zeotropic mixed refrigerant (MR) of R22 ($CHClF_2$) and R23 ($CHF_3$) are utilized as operating fluids of the developed cryoablation device to form the sufficient temperature and to verify the quality of the inside of cryoablation probe. The experimental results of R410A and the zeotropic MR show the temperature non-uniformity over the range are $244.8K{\pm}2.7K$ and $239.8K{\pm}4.7K$ respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the probe experiences the consecutive flow boiling over the target range of 200 mm.

  • The optimum size combination of heat exchangers in a Joule-Thomson(J-T) circuit for small cryogenic systems has been sought analytically, when the circuit is combined with a two-stage Gifford-McMahon(GM) cooler. Full thermodynamic cycle analysis was carried out to predict the performance of the combined refrigeration system. Relevant convective heat transfer coefficients, the computerized properties of helium, and the refrigeration capacity curve of a typical GM cooler have been used in the analysis. The result showed that, by changing the configuration(heat exchanger area ratio) of the system, the performance of the commonly-used GM/J-T refrigerators could be optimized. For the maximum refrigeration performance, the optimum mass flow rate of the refrigerant and the relative size between the heat exchangers have been obtained, when the cooling load was 0.1W at 3.995K with the total heat exchanger area being given.

  • In this paper, two different types of natural gas liquefaction cycle with 2 staged compression were designed and simulated to develop liquefaction process which is the core technology in the Industry of natural gas liquefaction plant. These include the cascade cycle with inter-cooler which is consisted of propane, ethylene and methane cycle. One of these is that liquid-gas heat exchanger is applied to between methane and ethylene cycles, and another is that liquid-gas heat exchanger is added to between ethylene and propane on the above process. Also, these cycles are compared with two staged cascade process using an inter-cooler. The COP of process2 is shown about 14.0% higher than that of process1, respectively. Also, the yield efficiency of LNG improved comparing with process1 with 11.5% lower specific power.

  • In this study, a cryogenic vessel was constructed to maintain and control the safe pressure of liquid hydrogen boil-off gas (BOG), and the numerical analysis was conducted on the development of computational fluid dynamics model inside the high-pressure vessel. An evaluation system was constructed using cryogenic inner and outer containers, pre-cooler, upper flange, and internal high-pressure container. We attempted to analyze the performance of the safety valve by injecting relatively high temperature hydrogen gas to generate BOG gas and quickly control the pressure of the high-pressure vessel up to 10 bar. As a results, the liquid volume fraction decreased with a rapid evaporation, and the pressure distribution increased monotonically inside a high pressure vessel. Additionally, it was found that the time to reach 10 bar was greatly affected by the filling rate of liquid hydrogen.

  • This paper describes experimental investigation on neon refrigeration system using commercial helium compressor. In this paper, neon refrigeration cycle is calculated with assumption of ideal heat exchanger. From analysis, 32.6 K of the lowest temperature and 0.945 of quality after expansion are predicted. Cryogenic heat exchangers for pre cooler and main heat exchanger are designed and fabricated with configuration of tube-in-tube heat exchanger. In experiments, cooling performance test are performed as variation of charging pressure and orifice hole diameter. From experimental results, the lowest temperature of 44.0 K was measured with 500 ${\mu}m$ orifice and 1500 kPa of charging pressure.

  • This paper discusses a structure design and thermal analysis of cryogenic conduction cooling system for a high current HTS DC reactor. Dimensions of the conduction cooling system parts including HTS magnets, bobbin structures, current leads, support bars, and thermal exchangers were calculated and drawn using a 3D CAD program. A finite element method model was built for determining the optimal design parameters and analyzing the thermo-mechanical characteristics. The operating current and inductance of the reactor magnet were 1,500 A, 400 mH, respectively. The thermal load of the HTS DC reactor was analyzed for determining the cooling capacity of the cryo-cooler. Hence, we carried out the operating test of conduction cooling system of the 1st stage area with high current flow. The cooper bars was cooled down to 40 K and HTS leads operated stably. As a experiment result, the total heat load of the 1st stage area is 190 W. The study results can be effectively utilized for the design and fabrication of a commercial HTS DC reactor.

  • In this paper, I present the domestic development of near infrared camera systems for the ground telescope and the space satellite. These systems are the first infrared instruments made for astronomical observation in Korea. KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) was developed to be installed on the 1.8m telescope of the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea. KASINICS is equipped with a $512{\times}512$ InSb array enable L band observations as well as J, H, and Ks bands. The field-of-view of the array is $3.3'{\times}3.3'$ with a resolution of 0.39"/pixel. It employs an Offner relay optical system providing a cold stop to eliminate thermal background emission from the telescope structures. From the test observation, limiting magnitudes are J=17.6, H=17.5, Ks=16.1 and L(narrow)=10.0 mag at a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 in an integration time of 100 s. MIRIS (Multi-purpose InfraRed Imaging System) is the main payload of the STSAT-3 in Korea. MIRIS Space Observation Camera (SOC) covers the observation wavelength from $0.9{\mu}m$ to $2.0{\mu}m$ with a wide field of view $3.67^{\circ}{\times}3.67^{\circ}$. The PICNIC HgCdTe detector in a cold box is cooled down below 100K by a micro Stirling cooler of which cooling capacity is 220mW at 77K. MIRIS SOC adopts passive cooling technique to chill the telescope below 200K by pointing to the deep space (3K). The cooling mechanism employs a radiator, a Winston cone baffle, a thermal shield, MLI of 30 layers, and GFRP pipe support in the system. Opto-mechanical analysis was made in order to estimate and compensate possible stresses from the thermal contraction of mounting parts at cryogenic temperatures. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical structure was also conducted to ensure safety and stability in launching environments and in orbit. MIRIS SOC will mainly perform the Galactic plane survey with narrow band filters (Pa $\alpha$ and Pa $\alpha$ continuum) and CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background) observation with wide band filters (I and H) driven by a cryogenic stepping motor.
