A brake device for the high-speed impacting object is designed using an axial crushing of thin-walled metal cylinder. Thickness of the cylinder is increased smoothly from the impacting end to the fixed end, resulting in the truncated cone shape. Truncated cone shape minimizes the imperfection-sensitivity of the structure and ensures that plastic hinges are formed sequentially from impacting end. This prevents the undesirable sudden rise in the first peak-crushing load. Several specimens with different conic angles, mean thickness of the wall, and materials were designed and quasi-static compression tests were performed on them. Results indicate that adoption of appropriate conic angle prevents simultaneous wrinkles generation and sudden rise of crushing load and that appropriate conic angle differs in each case, depending on the geometry and material property of the cylinder. Finite element analysis was performed for static compression of the cylinder and its accuracy was checked for the future application.

In the frontal collision of cars, front parts of cars such as engine rail and side members that are composed of hatted section tubes should absorb most of the collision energy far the passenger compartment not to be deformed. For these reasons the study on the collapse characteristics, maximum crushing load and energy absorption capacity of hatted section tubes are needed. In this study, top hatted section tubes and double hatted section tubes are investigated. The maximum crushing load of hatted section tubes is induced from plastic buckling stress of plates by considering that the hatted section tubes are composed of plates with each different boundary conditions and that its material has a strain hardening effect. On this concept maximum crushing load equations of hatted section tubes are derived and verified by experiments. from the results of experiment, the differences of collapse characteristics between top hatted section tube and double hatted section tube are analysed. And mean crushing loads of hatted section tubes from experiments are compared with other theory.

Factors influencing shear behavior of granular material include particle size, shape, distribution, relative density, particle crushing, etc. In this study, these factors are characterized by viewpoint of shear behavior using numerical analysis based on DEM. Geometrical particle shape is represented by a combination of small circular particles and influence of particle shape on crushing is studied through relative comparisons between clump (uncrushable) and cluster (crushable) models which are modeled using DEM. Also, particle shape is quantified by the dimensionless parameters such as circularity and convexity. The results indicate that particle shape indexes have a negative association with internal friction angle. Also, internal friction angle becomes reduced and failure envelop curve becomes nonlinear due to the particle crushing. It is also found that numerical results are quite good agreement with the experimental test conducted in this study.

Earth and rock fill dam is our typical dam because of their inherent flexibility and adaptability to various fundation conditions. In order to secure structural safety, rockfill materials are used angular particles obtained by blasting parent rock or rounded particles collected from river beds. Concrete-faces rockfill dams(CFRD) and Concrete-faces gravelfill dams(CFGD) have become popular in the last 20 years as s result of their good performance and low cost compared with the rockfill dam. These Dams are also constructed by the materials. A key factor in the design of the dams is the deformations induced during construction and upon reservoir filling. These can be predicted using the stress-strain and strength properties can be adequately define. However the stress-strain properties of rockfill are difficult to determine because the properties are affected by such factors as particle grading, size and shape of particles, stress conditions, and particle crushing. In our study, testing of the behavior of the rockfill materials are essential prerequisites to the realistic analysis and design of the CFGD. This paper deals with laboratory testing of particle crushing among the study.
The use of lithium-ion batteries increases significantly with the rapid spread of electronic devices and electric vehicle and thereby an increase in the amount of waste batteries is expected in the near future. Therefore, studies are continuously being conducted to recover various resources of cathode active material (Ni, Co, Mn, Li) from waste battery. In order to recover the cathode active material, black mass is generally recovered from waste battery. The general process of recovering black mass is a waste battery collection - discharge - dismantling - crushing - classification process. This study focus on the crushing/classification process among the processes. Specifically, the particle size distribution of various samples at each crushing/classification step were evaluated, and the particle shape of each particle fraction was analyzed with a microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). As a result, among the black mass particle, fine particle less than 74 ㎛ was the mixture of cathode and anode active material which are properly liberated from the current metals. However, coarse particle larger than 100 ㎛ was present in a form in which the current metal and active material were combined. In addition, this study developed a PBM(Population Balance Model) system that can simulate two-species mixture sample with two different crushing properties. Using developed model, the breakage parameters of two species was derived and predictive performance of breakage distribution was verified.

Axial crushing behavior of cylindrical shell Is utilized in the braking of the high-velocity impacting object. In this paper, truncated cone shape brake device is introduced. That is, thickness of the shell is increased gradually from the impacting end to the other end. A detailed experimental investigation on the quasi-static axial crushing behavior of truncated cone type brake devices has been performed. Specimens of various shape were tested to check the influence of design parameters such as length, radius, mean thickness, and conical angle of cylinder. Influence of the material properties were also investigated by adopting aluminum, low carbon steel, and stainless steel as constructing materials. By analyzing deformation procedures of the specimens, it is seen that conical angle influence the deformation mode and the sequence of the wrinkles generation. Braking distance and mean braking force of each specimen were predicted based on the crushing load measured from the tests.
The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.
Concrete has two different failure mechanisms : compressive crushing and tensile cracking.
Concrete models should use the two different failure criteria to analyze the inelastic behavior of
concrete including multiaxial crushing and tensile cracking. Concrete models used in this study
are based on plasticity with multiple failure criteria of compressive crushing and tensile cracking.
For tensile cracking behavior, two different plasticity models are investigated. The* ,e are
rotating-crack and fixed-crack plasticity models, classified according to idealization of crack
0rientat:ions. The material models simplify inelastic behavior of concrete for plane stress
problenls. The material models are used for the finite element anlaysis. Analytical results are
compared with several experiments of reinforced concrete member. The advantages and
disadva.ntages of rotating-crack and fixed -crack plasticity models are discussed.
Granular soils having a large particle size have been used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. Consequently, the shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in respect of stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause a disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM (Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC2D (Particle Flow Code). By dividing soil particle bonding model into crushing model and noncrushing model, total four particle bonding models were simulated and their results were compared. Noncrushing model included one ball model and clump model, and crushing model included cluster model and Lobo-crushing model. The combinations of soil particle followed the research results of Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo (2005) which were composed of eight circles. The results showed that the friction angle was in order of clump model > cluster model > one ball model. The particle bonding model compared to one ball model and noncrushing model compared to crushing model showed higher shear strength. It was also concluded that the model suggested by Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo (2005) is not appropriate to simulate the soil particle crushing.

Recently, granular soils having a large particle size are frequently used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. The shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in the stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause the disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce an issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Using the crushing model and non-crushing model which were created in this study, numerical analyses of ring shear test were conducted and their results were analyzed and compared. In general, landslide and slope stability are accompanied by a large displacement and consequently not only a peak strength but also a residual strength are very important in the analysis of landslide and slope stability. However the direct shear test which has been commonly used in the determination of shear strength parameters has a limitation on displacement therefore the residual strength parameters can not be obtained. The characteristics of residual shear behavior were investigated through the numerical analyses in this study.
